WORK OF SECRET SOCIETIES
CongregntiunaiistCounctl Itecog-

PORTLAND , Ore. , July 12.-At the
morning session of the national council or
Congrogationabists a number of minor corn-
mittees wore appointed. The report on
secret societies was read by 11ev. Vi' , II ,
Davis of Newton , Mass.
These organizations are not antagonistic
in their purpose to the work of the churches ,
Widely immilm.mential secret orders put era-
phasis upon certain fundamental truths of
Clmristinnity anti demand In the character
of their members those moral qualities
rhIcbm we associate with religious standards
of life.
The nttitude of the Cimristian church
toward timeso multitudinous secret orders
houbd be courteous and Cimrlstiitn , for the
cimurch cannot afford to occupy a position of
prejudice or unrensonabii imostility upon
any question of public opinion or social
habit. for such a temper at once sacrifices
both time spirit anti the power of the Curls-
tin faith.
This sociological trend of our times has
tremendous forces of good as vell as of
evil in it anti the church will wisely separate -
rate the one from the other in Its judgment
and action.
Time foblowing resolution was presented
for passage :
Resolveil , That we gratefully recognize the
fraternal and philantbmroPic purpose of many
of the secret organizations ; , , we deem it
the privilege and the tiuty of the church to
meet in more generotis and ChrIstian ways
the social ways of the neighborhoods in
which they are organized-to the end that
whatever tends to lower the socinl and
moral tone of the community many be met
anti supplanted by the higher social servici
end warmer Christian Icilowebip of time
church of Cod.
The council accepted the report anti the
committee was dlscimarged. Rev. I. "IV. Met-
calf of Elyria. 0. , reati a paper on "iiov
to Secure the l'roperty of Disbanded
Chmimrcimes. "
Time Alabama contest was brougit up
again today and by a vote of 119 to 20 time
report of the committee on credentials was
adopted , after being slightiy nmemided. The
committee's report , as amended , refers time
contest back to the state bodies of Alabama
and recommends timat all the churches of
the state elect delegates to a state comiven-
tion , cabled for the purpose of cettling the
difference between time two state bodies.

CLIIVELAND , July 12.-WhIle work is
being pushed forward as rapidly as possible -
blo toward reaciming the scene of last night's
explosion. there scents to be little or any
prospect that any of the eleven workmen
wlmo were in ( ho tunnel when the accident
occurred will be found alive.
J , Reynolds , who is superintendent of the
construction of time tunnel , stated today that
ho had not the slightest hope in the world
of rescuing the men alive. lie said that ( lie
pipe in which the air is forced into time ( Un-
nei , ends about SOt ) feet nearer time shore
'ban the workings where the men were em-
pioyod whemm the explosion occurred. Owing
to that fact the foul air nail gases would
be forced onto them before It would begin
to escape into time otimtr portion of the tua-
nd. Should It. happen that any of time men
are alive they would , as speedily as possi-
bbo , make their way to the pipe , where
they would ho assured of safety for a time
at least. As the air enters this tunnel from
the pipe with considerable force , it would
have a tendency to force back the irnlmmmre air
and create a space of at least ten feet , where
comparative safety wouid be mmssimred.
Superiimtendent Kingsley of time waterworks -
works department said today that Ito hail
no reason to believe that timere has been
any cave-in at time IloInt where the explosion
occurred , Eveim though a considerable por-
(10mm of the cia' roof anti aides of time tunnel
caved in , there s hut a small chance of
water flrmdlng its way in as the tunnel Is
sixty-five feet beiow the bed of the lake
and time surrountilag earth Is unusually firm
and compact. The only thing with whicim
the rescuers have to contend at present is
the foul air anti time chance of mmnotlmer cx.
plosion taking place ,
A rescuing party which was lowered in
the tunnel returned after being down half
an hour , and reported that it. had been un-
abbe to penetrate further than 4,200 feet ,
nearly half a mile from time lace of the
drive , Time menmbors of the party said timere
was undoubtedly a fire raging In time tunnel ,
