Hank clearings ( ho last wEek made a most excellent showing , running consider- ftli ) above the * l.Oufi ) a day mark. The rainy weather Iy reason of keeping people in.loors to some extent ha been against the best interests of the retaiL trnde. ( rocr1es Not n AetIse. \Vho1eilo grocers report a slight falling oft In the volume of their trade for inst -i' week as cOIflt'areti with that of a week : ago , but still they say business Is very gOOI. The market remains about the same \s _ In most lines. but a tow classes of goods . are still fluctuating. The sugar market is reported as beLng strong , hut no quotable ' changes have as yet taken pla'e on relined - lined grades at this Point. Th Indications are for higher price5 in the near future , as the period of heavy consumption is newt t hand. - In farlnacenus goods flour , oatmeal and beans are alt quoted a little lower. The reason for this is as before reported the near npproncii of the new crop and the : consequent desire to clean p the old stock ' as close as possible. Canned goods , especially corn and toma- toes. are being held flrm at last advance and packers of both have withdrawn prices on futures. As far as reported no other changes of any importance took piace last week in the schedule of vrices. Trade in hardware continues to be very active , nn4 in fact dealers say they have about all the bUines they can take care of. of.As As anticipated a week ago a few ad- Vnnces have taken place in certain litirs of seasonable goods owing to the fact that the demand i greater than the supply. IVire cloth is of this ciass and is being rlUOteil a little higher than a week ago , as are nbo screen doors. Copper rivets have Z1i'flflced about 20 per Cent and in reality copper goods of all kinds have taken an UPvnrd Jump. Manufacturers say it is caused I ) the government using so much material Yor cartridges and other purposes of that kind. The rope market remained steady in't week for the first time since the blockade at Manila began. Rope is now higher than it has been for several ) 'ears and if the war continues for some time there is no telling how high It will go. Little Change In flr GoolN. Tn dry goois there is very little change. Tim Condition of the weather ilgis had a tendency to cause a slackening in trade. but nevertheless orders for summer goods continue to potir in. There were not n many country merchants In as a weei ago , but the exPositioll brings in a goon many that have never been here before and as a result jobbers are constantly making flea. friends and retailers Ltrt learning that it Is not necessary ( or them to go east In order to get supplies. No. change of any Importance has taken plttee in the market as far as reported. Rubber gOOdS are now moving In good shape. Trade in this line has been rather - slow all the spring , but the rains of the last few weeks . have helped the dealers out immensely and they now .have all the business they scan handle. 110th rubber clothes and footwear are lb good demand and they are wanted immedIately. Stocks out through the country are evidently running low and dealers that have been slow in placing their oriler . Wire now anxious to get them in. Not only are the orders ( or Immediate delivery coming in more rapidly. but the rains seem to in- vreaso the number and size of fall orders 55 sveli. The bent and shoe business is moving along about the same as usual and consequently - quently there Is very little to report in that line. The volume of business transacted - acted continues to be very satisfactory and the indications are that the next few weeks will show a marked Increase , that Is If good crops nra harvested. Lumber men are also beginning to talk of an impruvement in wholesale trade. The market has for some time past been weak nttI prices were constantly going down and as a result country merchants stopped buying - ing and waited for the bottom to be reached. Now that prIces are advancing on nil lines of lumber , dealers think it is time to buy and conseluently there is greater activity than for several weeks past. The orders are very liberal and the impresion throughout the country seems to be that farmers are going to make very extensive improvements as soon as crops are harvested. fltiiness in a retail way is also very sat- Isfactory. In settling up their accounts for lait month a few dealers found that May was the heaviest month they have had in many years. This is of course very largely caused by the demand for material with ' which to complete the exposition buildings. $ This branch of the iumber trade is now practIcally over and the accounts for this month will doubtless not be quIte so that- tering. There Is , however , a good active demand from the city trade and dealers are expecting to do a big business from now on. Fruit and Produce. Strawberries continue to be the principal feature of the fruit trade. but this vili not be the case much longer. They are very poor for this time of year. as they are water soaked and In much the same condition - dition as they vero early in the year , Most of them are coming from northern Mis- court , Iowa and a few from Oregon , but Id' another week the supply will be PrettY well exhausted , Quotations raiige from 12 on best shi'ping stock dowat to 11. or whatever - ever commission men can get , on Ieldiers stock. A few blackberries from Texas are flow on the market , but they come too tar to . ho gOod. They are selling from $2.50 to 2.5. ; Blnck raspberries are here ( rein Arkansas - kansas anti are ( tuoteti at 11.&O per twenty- four-pint case , Iut 88 yet the receipts arc small. Lemons are the only kind of tropicaL fruit that is meeting ivitit good sale and the Price is constantly going up anti has now reached $ L75 to $ LC3 on Cal- ifornias , with indications for still higher irice. 'rho drop of halt a cent in the price of eggs last week shows the effect of raising the rates on eggs from hero to Now York from &Tc to l.lO jier 100 on car lots. But. tee remains unchanged In Prlct ) as vell as ( lUttlitY. There is very little in the market now but country make and that Is as weedy us er. Considering the extremely bearish character - actor of the government crop ieimrt wheat started fairly steady. A slight improve- meat in the weather. however , weak for- eisa markets and a growing senee of the signifleance of the immense. acreage sotvit to wheat this season , together with its gen emily excellent condition , produced a feeling - ing of weakness. Longs qttickly lost hCart and began to let go. The fright Soon be came so general that the liquidation rush finally became more of a matter of tinding buyers than of irices. Short selling , led by C'udaliy , was also general. July , whIch closed yesterday at SS'4c , sohb down to SSt4c , and September fell of ! from 753-Sc to 7It.c. There Was a slight reaction during the last half hour of the session , due apparently more to profit-taking by the cirly short sellers than to any real increase of strength in the general situation. Atlantic port eIernnces for the day were 663. ) bushels. The government report Indicated a crop of 645.ko ; bushels winter and spring on an acreage ot 13.ftO,000 acres. The aggregated worlds shipments for the week are about 12,00OC1 bushels , compared with 5.322 , ( ) bushels lsst year. Chicago receipts for the day were 36 cars. against 12 a year ago. Many outsiders who did not act on the yet- low fever news yesterday let go their bong provisions today. There was also some important selling by packers. The English concerns who arc short were the buyers. July opened 7"e lower at $101215 , athnced to BO.1114 , then sold stendil down to $9.CiLj , the ciosing price. NEW YORK , June lb.-Yetterdiu sharp advances in stocks brought on a heavy volume of buying orders to the comnmis- sian houses this morning , especially in the Grangers and Brooklyn Rapid transit. The rish to buy was met by offers to renlie by the professional operators , who bought at yesterday's lower level. An urgent demand - mand from the short interest , as was the case yesterday , antI conditIons Unfavorable to a rise In prices. were given more atten- lion than on yesterday , so that the o'en- log gains in almost all cases were lost and prices crumbled in the second hour of the short session to below last night's level. i The export report entouraged the bears to put out fresh lines near the close , causing suint' shari' iiiig with tnty feeble rallies , notably in Sugar and the Urangers. Louis. villa and Southern preferred were conpicU- out ; stifterers on the yellow fever sitre iintt were an unsettling itilluence from the open- lag. l'eoples Gas was eunpicUotiiy 'nealt without any news to account for it. Tile deciine In Ilrookiyn transit was closely connected with Profit taking in Uratigers. Sugar yielded from the same cause aced- tUfttt'tl by bear Pressure. Yesterday' s idea of a movement by Sietin toward pesce ass seen to be illustrative as far its it cut- cerned any Pravticabe ! movement. 'i'ite strong bank statement fulieti to rally the market. The large increase in cash 0 ! * 5- 20,200 exceeded the eititnite , though the receipts by the banks were known to be large both from the interior and the sub- treasury Oil account of war expenditures anti most of these were in gold. 'rho cash increase was aitificietit to meet the large increase of $3,6'37SO0 in the reserve require- mfleit5 and add to the surplus tile sum of $1,591,400. The deposits were swelled not only by the Increased citsia but by an cx- pansion of 19.141.200 in baits , This has no doubt largely found Its way into stock market speculation , though there has been active bidding for commercial paper by ilnanciai institutions during the week. The absorption of bonds has been large 'during the week and prices yielded less titan for stocks. United States new Is , registered , ttnd old Is , cetti'un , have declined i ; new 49 , cOUPOU. This was notably the case with Americans , led by Atchison which was said to be bought by a bull pooi in Now York , The interest spread to oilier shares , It Is believed that the United StateS loan next week may be subscribed many times over , anti this may sentimentally - tally affect the share market. The market here sItows faint indications of hardening. More Americult bills are offered for forward - ward delivery than' for some time past. The decline in New York exchange is also a factor , while I learned from good sources that a. large majority of German bills created with the remittance months back of Chinese luau ftmnd3 to London mature next week anti will likely be renewed. It will be noted from the comparative statement of .the receipts by weeks given above that the arrivals of both cattle anti hogs have been large this wek. Another ctrcum- Stance that would naturally be expected to keep back shipments of hiogs is the fact that prices have been decidedly lower , but still the hogs have kept coming. CATTLE-Omaha had about ithi the cattle that were on sale today , there not being enough at either Kansas City or Chicago to establish quotations. The 10) loads on sale at this point , however , were flt'flt too many to SUIpl ) au the demands , , I the buyers and thin market as a whole was in very faIr shape. Desirabls beef steers sold quite readily at just itbout steady prices tilid everything in that line was sold and generally welshed UI ) in good season. The less desirable kinds were a little slow and still practically everything sold early. Beef cattle have bcen doing a little better this week and values have gradually worked upward. Handy natives. such as are in the best tIe- niand , are I&i15c higher than a week ago , while heavy natives have gained &lJiCc. Even the heavy and rough branded cattle are a little stronger than a week ago. Only a few cows and heifers were on sale this morning and the "yards were soon cleared , but cow stuff ' was if anything easier. The cow market has been on the down grade all this week , as has been frequently remarked before ir this column. The loss for the week can safely be put at IG 123e. and there are sOme Who would call it still more. I3'yers ' took it into their heads that the cow market was too high and they have been on the boar side nil the week. Still it is hardly reasonable to expect cow stuff to scIl down very much as it is generally admitted that supplies are light in the 'ountry anti that good breeding - ing stock cannot be had at any price. Moreover it is still some time before grass butchers' stock is likely to show up in sufficient numbers to materially affect the market. Texas grass cattle are moving , but those received by the packers here this week are reported as not being nearly so fat as the cattle were last year. Stockers and feeders have been in good demanl all the week , but very light supply. Under such conditions there was no danger of values declining any and it may be said that good light stockers are seliing as high as at any time. ltepresentativc saics : STEERS. No. Av Pr. No. y. Pr.
