aitlon grounds , after which they were enter-
talned at dinner at the Omaha club.
The vrIticIpltl questIons that the commIttee -
tee considered last nIght referred to the
location of the convention and the pro-
gram. The former was quickly decIded In
favor of lloyd's theater , whIch flail been reserved -
served for the three days by the local corn-
zulttee. The other was discussed at. some
length and It was decided that the afternoons -
noons should be occupied by vIsits to the
expositIon , while the busIness ses3Ions

Secretury HowlIg'M flxiresslon.
The members of the committee vIlt leave
today , but Secretary Slice will return in
about a week and open headquarters In
room 5 at the Millard hotel. The members
who visited the expoltion grounds were so
much impressed wIth the magnificence of
the Transmnlsslsslppi show that they nearly
forgot politics. They declared that It exceeded -
ceeded theIr greatest expectations and that
nh that Is necessary to secure the attendance -
anco of every delegate Is to get them to
understand what they would miss if
they stayed away. In regard to the
prospects for the convention
Secretary Dowling says his correspondence -
once indicates that the coming conventIon
will be one of the most notable sessions the
NaUonal league has over enjoyol. States
that have irovlously been represented only
by one or two delegatis are coming in with
full delegatIons anti the attendance prom-
lees to be a record breaker. ThIs Is partIally -
tIally accounted ( or by time attraction of the
expositIon and the exceptionally low raIlroad -
road rates that have been made and also
by the fact that an unusual number of state
conventions nro being bold this year. In
previous years limo delegations from a large
number of states have been named by the
president or the executive committee of the
state organIzation , but this year they are
nearly all holdIng conventIons and the mm-
tional 'lelegates are much more ilkety to attend -
tend than If they bad been merely deslgna.
ted by the state league otflclals. There are
half a dozen state conventions schoduleti for
June. among hlch is that of California ,
wimich has not held a state convention for
four years. Secretary D wllng. adds that
there are indIcatIons evreywhero of In.
increased interest In the league organiza-
tIomm and the Itrospects for the usefulness of
the league were never so brIght as at
present.

GRAND ARMY AND SCHOOLS
Veterans Tencli flj.ClIlalr.ii the t-s-
SOfl 'Flint lieiiiorinl Dns
Idiiijihusiscs.
The old veteran wIth his gray hair showing -
ing in shari ) contrast. to the blue and gold
of his army coat was a conspicuous figure
on the streets yesterday afternoon. He was
on'his way to gIve a lesson in Patriotism to ,
the rising generatIon by telling them the
story of the times in whIch Memorial day
had Its beginning. The regular Memorial
day exercises were held In all the public
schools o the city yesterday and In accordance -
cordanco with the custom that 1mm obtained
for many years the local menthers of the
various posts of the Grand Arifly of the
Itepubitc were detailed to act as speakers
at the varIous schools. When the practice
wa first inaugurated in Omaha there were
so many veterans and so few schools that
It was sometimes difficult for the committee
that hail. the matter in charge to assign
all the old soldiers who wanted to participate -
pate in the exercises , nut the schools have
multiplied while the ranks of the veterans
have thinned year by year , and yesterday
It was founil that there were not nearly
enough speakers to go around. Consequently
some of them had to speak at two and even
three schools , but with one or two exceptions -
tions one of them was present at every
school during the afternoon.
The speeches varied according to the ora-
urica& ULiiiIIiI UI LLIV Dj'vihe1b. t IUIC
they vere simple and well adapted to the
crowds of children that brard them. The
speakers brleliy referred to their experi-
paces on the field and few of them neglected
to draw on the present war ( or material with
which to inspIre their auditors with the
spirit of ratriotism.
In nearly every case the children signified
their appreciation of the services of time
speakers. not only by their close atti'ntion
and hearty appiuse. but by the preaenta-
lion of more or less elaborate floral cour-
testes as souvenirs of the occasion , In several -
oral cases the old soldiers carrid away
huge baskets of roses that would have been
acceptable to an operatic favorite , In most
of the schools the speechmaking was sup.
plemmiented by a hrif program of patriotic
omigs and recitatIons.

The attorneys for time state say that they
feel certain of a conviction , contemiding that
they have made an unusually strong ease.
considering the fact that there was nothing
but circumstantial evidence at hand , They
contend that they have connected the do-
femitlants with time commission of the crime
anti that almost conclusive proof has been
offered to establish the fact that the three
Kastners were committing a burglary at
Nelson's saloon and that upon being discovered -
covered , they fled. While so fleeing , the
state believes that they shot the two officers
in order to make their escape certain.
Attorneys for the defendants pin their
hopes almost entirely upon the alIbi theory ,
contending that they have estahiishe'i the
fact that all of the Kastners were at honie
during the entire night preceedIng anti 501-
lowing the shooting. Regardumig this , the
attorneys for time state urge that It has
Punctured the alibi , and that the defendants
have failed to specify any time that they
were at home , testifying only in a general
way that they were in their rooms at the
tlimte of the commission of the crime ,
