Mnrket Contliinen to Wait on Dr- . rlsl * . e XTH ill HliKaitemviit. NEW YORK. May 20. The Indisposition of the stock prices to move widely pending the decisive naval engagement In West In dian waters became even more pronounced today than during the early part of the week. Today the professional traders were apparently unwilling to wait over night for a turn In the market. In the last hour they sold tha stocks they had bought In the morning , the process Involving the wiping out of all the early gains except for n small number of stocks which showed special Cle ments of strength. The supply of stocks was small and prices moved up quite easily on the buvlng movement , but the demand was equally small and the sale of holdings Involved the return of th price level almost exactly to last night's. There was thu same tendency ns had been manifested for some tlmo past to tnke up particular stocks or groups of blocks and advance them Inde pendently of the market. Today the local traction companies were selected. The movement began In Brooklyn Rapid Transit I and Its price rose 2 points before the others i of the group vere affected. Later Manhat tan , Metrojmlltan Street Railway and Third Avenue took the movement nnd rose be tween 1 ami 3 points. Various reports were put out to account for the movement. There was selling for Indon account during the mornlntr , but this was offset by some small outside buying through commission houses. Thn money market continued easy In all de partments , foreshadowing another strong return by the bankers tomorrow. This Is an element of strength so far ns It Indicates a relaxation of the w'thholcllng ' of credits. But a greater demand for money , showing the resumption of some of the projects which vu > na Interrupted by the stringency nt the time of the outbreak of the war , would bo regarded with satisfaction. Sterling ex change recovered a fraction , despite the further fnll In the txindon discount rate. The recent easing In the money rate In London Is evidently not entirely normal , being due In i part to the nrtlllcl.il measures ! taken by the < Bank of England to strengthen Its gold reserve. There wnsery little movement or nctlUty i In the bond mnrket. Total xalex , $1 : 32J 000 ; Vnlted States old 4s , registered , declined * f In the bid price. The last sale today of the new 4 < . coupon , nt 122 1-8 , showed : n decline of 7-8 from the sale on the lost preceding day. The Evening Post's London financial ca blegram says : The stock markets here were quiet , but llrm today , the chief factor being easier , money , with n prospect for Its con- tlnunnce i for a time. Americans were steady , but < lifeless , pending more decisive war news. Katllrs were good on the discovery of . fresh water supplies .at Johannesburg , There wa.s n sharp rciovery In Brazils. At the same time they were not the very bist westerns In thu world and the average of all thu offerings was not veiy high In respect to quality , 'iheie were ns n matter of course homo pretty decent cattle , but not many. While there was nothing In the kind of cattle on sale to make them especially dcilinblo In the eyes of buyers , thuie win novelthless a very good demand , botli local and shipping.
