HART RILLED BY BURGLARS Fatally Wounded by the Hen Who Bobbed Him. BULLET WAS FIRED FROM THE DARK Mnkr a Wholpimle Itnlrt nnd Beenre n Clrent Dcnl of Plunder , Killing the Only Man Who Sought to Thieves held a carnival In South Omaha Tuesday night , six robberies and one shootIng - Ing affair being reported to the pallet ; yes terday morning. About 3 o'clock this morning the saloon of Mlko Hart , Twenty-sixth nnd Q street , was entered and ramsacked. After col lecting a quanlty of clothing In the bar room the burglars visited the upstairs portion tion of thn building , which Is occupied by Hart and his family. Mrs. Hart was awakened by a nolso In the kitchen and called to her husband to get up and see what was going on. Hart jumped from his bed and as he stepped from his bed room door a shot was fired and tbo saloon keeper fell to the floor with o bullet In his neck. The robbers then departed as rapidly as possible , leaving the plunder previously collected lying on the floor. Mrs. Hart realized that her husband was badly Injured and nt once sent for Drs. Kelly nnd McCrnnn. Up on examination H was found that the bullet had entered Hart's neck Just be low the Adam's apple. Although everything possible Is being done by the physicians In charge It Is feared that Hart cannot sur vive. H was learned yesterday morning that entrance to the saloon had been effected by prying open a rear window. At the time of ( he shooting It was too dark In the rooms for Hart to sco the burglars , so that the police are without any description at all. Other Pliicon Iliilihed. The residence of W. L. Holland , manager of the Nebraska Telephone company , at Twenty-fourth nnd Q strees , was entered by means of skeleton keys some time after J. o'clock n. ra. yesterday and several hundred dollars' worth of property carried away. Mrs. Holland lost three rings , ono a diamond , and n purse containing $32 In money. Mr. Holland lost a gold watch nnd a new spring overcoat. In this case the thieves were so careful that they did not awaken Mr. and Mrs. Holland and the robbery was not dis covered until yesterday. Burnt matches were found on the floors of all of the down stairs rooms and from this it is presumed the house breakers made a thorough search of the premises for valuables. Neighbors saw two strange looking racn peering into the windows at the Holland bouse about 8 o'clock Tuesday night , but after loitering about for some time they left. Sometime during the night the residence of W. H. Cressy , 1305 North Twenty-fourth street , was entered and a quantity of clothIng - Ing and a small sum of money carried away. This time the thieves entered through a window. While the Intruders were going through Mr. Cressy's clothing his wife awoke and spoke to him. The thief made a jump for an open window and managed to escape. Thomas Hector's homo at Twenty-third and K was also entered. It was reported the thieves secured $1CO hero , but Mr. Hector - tor says nothing of value was taken. Thompson's saloon at Twenty-fourth and K was visited and drinks and cigars taken. Pat Brosnlhan's saloon at Twenty-fourth and Q also received n. call , but the thieves were frightened away before they got any thing. Hunting the Criminal * . After the Hart shooting affair the police made a thorough search of the city and ar rested nineteen suspicious characters. Sev eral barns along Q street were searched and In each were found tramps sleeping. Box cars In the yards were also searched and quite a number of vagrants found and placed under arrest. All of those now under arrest will be given an opportunity of explaining their actions , but the police are satisfied that thu men who shot Hart and committed the other robberies are still at large. People who are on tho'fttreots a great deal , say that for the lasVjiwrek a gang of criminals has held fofUiion Lower N street , only waiting for a favorable opportunity to round up tbo town. The mayor and other city officials assert that the police force Is not nearly large enough , nnd It was stated yesterday after noon that stops would be taken to Increase the force by the addition of one or possibly two mounted officers. Under the arrange ment now In force the whole First ward north of J street Is without police protec tion. An officer Is supposed to perambulate along Twenty-fourth Btreet ns far north as J street and then turn back to N street. This raid of burglars coming as It hns on top of the release from Jail of the three confidence men has set the citizens to talkIng - Ing about the loose methods In vogue here , nnd some very radical measures are talked of. The police force Is considered entirely Inadequate , nnd It Is stated that a demand for a complete reorganization will be made. The coat , vest and shirt stolen from the residence of W. H. Cressy , 1303 North Twenty-fourth street , was found yesterday In the rear of n barn at Twenty-fifth nnd C streets. Everything of value had been removed from the pockets. Through the as sistance of outside parties the clothing was returned to Mr. Creasy. Chief Brennnn kept the entire police force on the Jump yesterday and last night. About a do/en suspicious characters were added to the collection already on hand , but It Is thought that the right men have not yet been found. Last evening Dr. McCrnnn reported that Mlko Hart was very low nnd that his re covery was doubtful. The bullet , which en tered the lower part of the neck , destroyed a portion of one of the lungs besides never- Ing n number of blood vessels. On account of the course taken by the bullet It Is con sidered dangerous to probe for It , nnd no attempt has been made to recover the piece of lead. Frank Doleznl swells the number of rob beries committed by reporting that nn at tempt was made to enter his saloon at Twenty-seventh nnd Q streets. He asserts that his sleeping room was entered and the keys to the saloon below taken from his trousers pocket. The wrong key was used In trying to open the door , and as the key stuck In the door the thieves gave up the Job. It was necessary for Dolczal to have the door taken from Its hinges before the key could bo released. Intel-rut I > ilfXxt Month. The prosecution Is making good progress In I the prosecution of tbe case of the State against Joseph and Louis Kastncr , father nnd son , charged with the murder of Officer Dan ' Tlcdeman on the * morning of Juno 9 last. The work of empanelling the jury was ) commenced at 2 o'clock yesterday after noon and nt the hour of adjournment last night , eleven of the twenty-five men called had been passed , so far as challenges for cause were concerned. This morning n largo number of Jurors , summoned especially for this cause , will appear , and with good luck it Is thought that the Jury will bo secured before the noon recess. Until yesterday afternoon It was thought thnt the Kastncrs would demand separate trials , but when they appeared , their at torneys announced thnt they would be tried together. It Is not thought that the case will consume more than two weeks at the j ' most , as much of the testimony adduced i upon the trial of the other defendant , AltI I gust Kastuer , will be eliminated. The u\l- ' deneo of the state upon the main points at Issue will be substantially the same as upon the trial of August Kastner. The at torneys for the defendants maintain that they will have considerable additional ovl- dcnce , but most of It they say will bo brought out for the purpose of strcnRtheti- ig the alibi that was attempted to bo roven when August Knottier was tried.
