STOCKS A.M > UOM > i , Price * n * a Usitc Arc I.owor In Al nrnnrlirs of Im oNtineiit. NEW YORK. May 13. The bull cam palgn inauguraled yesterday on the Stocl exchange promised well during the early part of today , but before the close Jhe ad vantage gained earlier had all been lost and prices as ; i rule were lower than last night not only In the sneplallles. whose weak ness stopped the advance , but in the stand ard stocks and those which .had led tli advance ns well. At the opening the bill contingent had to face a series of decline for Americans In London , but the tendeno for the London market nfter its opening was upward and the declines there wer Ignored , prices here opening higher al along the line. There was a fair volume o orders to buy which had come to commls sdon houses over night as a result of the strength displayed yesterday nnd there was I no selling for London account to amount I to anything. The advance was led with \lgor by People's Gas and Rock Island. The Grangers all showed strenglh. Rock Island which crossed Burlington temporarily yes terday , ruled above the latter stock all day today. The unsetlled tone of Tobacco nnd Ihe largo volume of transactions in It gave the llrst check to the advance. When heavy offerings of Sugar were Joined to those of . Tobacco the bull campaign received an ef fectual check for the day and was not re newed. There was n conspicuous movement ; of Rubber preferred on the strength of the , statement of the company's business made , at yesterday's annual meeting. The weak , ness In Sugar and Tobacco became more , pronounced as the day progressed , the ex treme decline In both stocks leaching to within a small fraction of 4 points. This , proved tos heavy a burden for the market to carry and prices fell away In a dull mar ket until neir the close , when there was - animation on realizing. The stringent measures adopted by the government to stop the publication of news of naval oper ations has pro\ed highly efflcntious anil In formation seemed to be entirely lacking in AVnll street today. This tended to beget some feellnc of nervousness and doubt which helped reaction. The money market ; was quot.ibly lower today nnd sterling ex ; change n half cent higher all round , but the easier money conditions had no effect ; , on speculation The weakness of wheat had doubtless some sympathetic effect. - Bonds wcro dull all day and prices moved ' , narrowly , but were well held in the late reaction In the stock market. Total sales $1.900.000 United States 4s wcro U lower in the bid price. Others were unchanged There were sales of the old 4s at a decline of 3-S from the preceding sale. There was a larger number of cars of stock hero today than was reported In the yards on any Wednesday of last month. It would look as If the Improvement in the markets was responsible for the llber.il run of stock. CATTLE U was a great day for cattle receipts , the arrivals being even larger than > es-terday , and the largest of any day since Wednesday of last week. The Improvement In the market has evidently had the antici pated result of inducing Increased ship ments. The most of the cattle here were cornfed beeves , a considerable proportion of which coiidlsted of branded westerns. While there were quite a good many cattle that could be classed as good , there were also a good many that were detldedly on the commonlsh order. The market was not so favorable to sell ers as was the case yesterday , advices from other selling points all indlcallnglarge runs nnd .lower markets , and under that In fluence the feeling here was easier. The most desirable kinds of natives and such cattle as were wanted by both packers and 1 shippers sold In many cases no lower , but aside from that the general market on beeves was 5 10c lower than ycsterdaj's market. Considering the large receipts the market was really In pretty good shape , und there was n fair movement , though It lacked a good deal of being as active as jes-terday. Bulchers' slock was in good request at steady prices , und buyers rode hard and fast to tind such cows and heifers ns they required to till orders. The holders of heavy fat cows th.it would come Into competition with dreshed beef steers were reporting the market on that kind as easier , In sympathy with the decline on steers. Bulls were rather Inclined toward slowness , und were a little lower. Veal calves were , as usual , good sellers. In the stocker nnd feeder division there was little business doing for the very good reason that the cattle were not here. Regu lar yard operators reported their pens as bare and there were almost no fresh cattio In excepting a few half-fat cattle. The market was without further feature of Im portance. As was reported yesterday , the demand continues good and far In excess of the receipts. What few cattle were offered met with ready sale at good steady prices , und the > ards were boon entirely cleared. Half-fat cattle sold to the feeders at right around $425.
