Turning to his stenog rapher he said : "Take a message to Agent Ulank , Lincoln , 'Why hasn't the battalion .hat we are to haul started ? The locomotive lias had steam up for three hours. " At first It was thought the laconic reply of the Lincoln agent was merely a joke In tended to cover up the real reason for the delay In the start of Nebraska's First In fantry , but later developments proved con- clusUcly that the telegram that the Omaha official received In reply to his query con tained the truth , the whole truth and noth ing but the truth. Illilillnu ; ( iooilliye to Mnjor Jonex. There was a big assemblage of railroad men and other citizens nt the headquarters of the Department of the Missouri , U. S. A. , yesterday to bid farewell to Major Jones , acting quartermaster of the depart ment. The announcement In The Dec that Major Jones would leave during the after noon for the Philippine Islands caused great surprise among his many friends , though a few of them had known for several dayu past that he would undoubtedly be selected as the man to look after the quartermaster's department of the Philippine expedition. Major Jones has been In Omaha a little over n year , during the most of which time ho has acted as chief quartermaster. ' He came to Omaha from the War department at Washington , going from San Antonio , Tex , , to Washington. He came to Omaha with the rank of captain , and leaves as a major , having been promoted to this position by the president last week. He has not yet received his commission as major , and therefore still continues to sign his name as captain , but will receive his major's commission before sailing from San Francisco. His family will remain in Omaha and be- will be accompanied from hero by Captain Coaklcy , who has acted as his chief clerk for some time. It is probable that several other men will be assigned to duty under Major Jones at San Francisco. Major Jones , entered the United States Military academy from Pennsylvania Sep tember 1. 1SC2. He was graduated with honor and served through the war with dis tinction , his rank In the regular army at various times being as follow s : Second lieutenant , Fourth artillery , Juno 17 , 1S67 ; first lieutenant , August 22 , 1S71 ; captain , Fourth artillery , January 24 , 1891 ; ; trans ferred to quartermaster's department April 20 , 1802 ; graduated from the Artillery school , , U. S. A. . 1870. It Is not too much to say that no nrmy otllcer ever went out of Omaha receiving more sincere God-speeds of the people gen erally. By his kindly manner , both In and out of the office , and his courteous treat ment of all who have had occasion to trans act business with him , he has made a host of friends for himself. Since the first start of the present army movement be has handled an Immense amount of business , Quartermaster Pond of this department be ing early sent to Mobile , leaving ( he quar termaster's department In charge of Major Jones. With tbo transportation ot the reg ular and state troops Major Jones has been kept pretty busy , and he has the credit of having handled the troops out of the De partment of the Missouri more expedltlously than the heads of any of the other depart ments In the army.
