NEW YORK , May 17. Today's advance
In the prices of stocks were the result of (

These operators argued that the marke

This represented an improvement In th
technical conditions of the market. Th
day's trading started off with the advantage

prices of American securities were ad

points. Enormous Mingle blocks of this
stock llguied In the dealings , both In the
downward movement and on the recovery.
The stock shows n net gain of 2U. The bull

crop of rumors , onei of which reported Spain

Todny'snrrlvnli of stock numbered 23lcars ,
as against 100 yestciday , 372 a week ago ,
3iO two weeks ago. The heavy falling oft
In arrivals as compared with one and two
weeks ago was duo to the shrlnkimu In cut-
tlo and sheep receipts. The arrhuls of hogs
were llbciul and fully up to what Is ordl-
narlly anticipated for a Tuesday. The mar
kets , us a whole , were In very satisfactory
condition us regards the selling Interests ,
u\civthliiB bringing strong to higher pi Ices.
All kinds of stock wore In good demand
and practically everything In the yards hud
changed hands at an early hour.
CA'ITLC l-'or u Tuesday the receipts of
cattle were light , the run today numbering
onlv'136 cars , us against 218 a week ago ,
and 210 two weeks ago. .As the market yt-s-
teiduy and on Satin day was In good shape
for the sellers It would seem only natuial
that theto should be a fair run , but so far
tills week It has been light.
As the most of the cattle hero wore corn-
fed steers , the offerings ot beef cattle were
of fair pioportlons , but there were few that
could bo called really good. A considerable
proportion of the receipts was made up of
westerns , and there were quite n S"Od many
lough and unllnlshcd cattle among the of
ferings. Still the buyeis wanted the cattle
and they seemed to have use for all kinds.
On most days there Is u strong Inclination
to nogluet the heavy and course beeves , but
today there was a demand for them till ,
and the market wus active and strong fiom
start to finish.
Thcie was ulho a very firm cow market
and the ten or u dozen loads of cows and
heifers In the yards changed hands In good 1
season. Veal calves sold as high us 1s
any time , good veals bringing $ GGO. Hujors
complain of the scarcity of calves and hay .
that they could use a good many moro If
they wore to be had. The country evidently
has no Intention of parting with many
calves , as , otherwise , the high pi Ices ruling
would bring them In. Hulls , stags , etc. ,
also sold at good , firm prices.
As noted yesterday theie Is an nctlvo d -
mnnd for stock cattle and the few here
brought good , strong prices. Ono bunch of
lltllo cattle hold up to Jo 10 , showing that
( food cattle are wanted , and that the coun
try seems ready to pay the price. Rcprc-

feed.A
A cattle salesman has It all 11 RU roil out
how cattle aid going to bo scuno all the
year , and consequently higher. According
to his theory thuro me fewer tattle th.ui
tibiial on late feed , owing to the fact that
feeders wuro high und scarce , und that thu
country was ntrnld to buy very freely.
Added to Unit ho claims u scarcity of old
cattle on thu ranges und says that the
young cattlu left will not put on sufficient
llesh to make good hecf.
Ono reason for cnnneis being scarce und
comparatively high Is to be found In thu
fact that thu country has plenty of feed
and Is taking anything that gives promise
of Improvement , so that a great many cut
tle that would ordinal Ily huv to be sold
as canners uro now going back Into the
count ! y. At the same tlmo there has been
Improvement In th demand for canning
stock. It h.is been noticed hc-ru of late that
oven shlppeis mo buying coarse , lie.ivy cat
tle , that they would not have looked at two
or threu weeks ago.
