of a north side family hotel prizes her par
rot very highly , relates the Chicago Chron
icle , hut n fo\v days ago she waa terribly
shocked by an Incident Inhlch the parrot
played the principal role. Amoug the regu
lar guests at the hotel Is n traveling sales
man who manges to get In off the road for
a few days each month and always stays at
the spinster's hotel. The lust time ho came
In It happened that ovcry room In the house
was taken. But the clerk Informed the
guest that by evening of the same day ho
would probably have a room vacant such as
ho desired. The traveling man , just In
from a long trip , Insisted that ho needed a
room at once , that ho wanted a bath and a
ulmvu auil bad to have both without delay ,
and therefore muni have a room of BOIIIO
kind.
After a consultation with the proprietor
and u rush about the house in a vain en
deavor to find a vacant room , or some hopes
of one , It was arranged that the traveling
man should occupy the landlady's room un
til such tlmo as ho got his shave and bath
and that perhaps by that time a loom could
bo secured for him.
This was entirely satisfactory to the trav
eling man , ami ho ntarted for the landlady's
room carrying one satchel , while the porter
followed him with two others. They walked
Into the room , dropped the things on the
lloor nnd the porter walked out. The trav
eling man looked around surveying the roam
and about the first thing that caught his eye
was the parrot In a big cage .overhanging
the bay window. At the snmo tlmo Polly
caught eight of the strange visitor , and be
ing used to no ono In that room but the
maiden lady apparently Buffered a severe
ehock. Polly recovered In a moment , however -
over , nnd looking down on the Intruder
with a ( | ulzzlcal , hypercritical air that uUo
carried astonishment with It , Polly re
marked In a very uhrlll tone that carried
the traveling man off his feet ;
