TJIE OMAHA DAILY B1 Local , Situation Remains Practically TTn- duinged Binco a Week Ago. BUSINESS IN SOME LINES SHOWS ADVANCES ItHnll Dmlem Fairly Pro i ere i Wenthcr Condition * Kxert Lnrtie InMsicuce on the Counnmlng ; Demand for MerclinnilUe. ' . week was not BO productive of Im portant changes In the general jobbing trade of the city. For'the most part trade moved along Irv the ordinary channels , al though the name Influences noted the week before were largely In evidence. Weather nnd temperature conditions haA'e operated nomcwhat adversely to an active . consuming demand for various lines of seaI I i onnblc goods. The cold and backward . prlng , so noticeable In most sections of the country , has enabled consumers" to post- j | pone to u considerable extent the purchase' . of spring and curly summtf merchandise , f During the ; last six dayp , however , the chnnge him been for tha better , and more active buying Is noticeable at least In nomu departments. I I 1 VulucH did not show such marked changes as during the previous week , the advance In cereals and cereal products having up- , patently about spent Its force some days ago , though In many Instiutccs consumers are just commencing to fuel Its force. The most noticeable change of the week was I In provisions , which made a sudden up ward movement , stimulated In part , nt least , by heavy purchases for government account. I The weather during the week locally was' I ' much more favorable to the retail trade than during the previous week , and retail merchants , as n rule , give good reports of the lust six days' doings. The successful prosecution of the Spanish war , leading to a belief In the speedy termination of hostilities , has done much ' to restore confidence In financial circles 1 with a tiniHf'iiitnt easing up of the money mnrket. Groccrlr * Tcnil L'lMtnrtl. Jobbers In wholcsnle groceries report the trade for Inst week ns being unumtnlly heavy for thlH senson of the year. Collec tions are nlso good , and consequently there Is nothing to complain of. The general tone of the mnrkut Is strong In most lines , nnd several kinds of goods show n marked ad vance over the quotations of a week ago. The sugar mnrket , however , declined one- sixteenth of u cent the first of last week , but It Is stronger now , and the Indications are for n still further advance. The cof fee mnrket rcmnlns firm nt lust week's quotations. Flour Is fluctuating up and down In sympathy with wheat , but no mnrkcd ndvnnce In price took place last week. Cnhnetl meats an- still on the up ward grade , owing to n slight scnrdty , nnd to the Increased demand to supply the needri of the War department. The present quotations on chccso show an advance over those of u week ngo of from % to % of a cent. Corn syrups vent up n cent , owing to the advunco In corn nnd starch Is nlno quoted S-8 of a cent higher for the same reason , In hardware there Is very little change. Business continues to move along nt n good rapid rule and collections nro In good shape. I'rlcest are holding steady , but no quotable changes arc reported. There Is beginning to be considerable demand for wire cloth , owing to the approach of fly time , nnd during the next few weeks a brisk trade In this line It ) expected. Boot and shoo Jobbers report u good , nc tlve trade for Inst week , especially In women's oxfords , which are growing more popular every year. The demand In other lines remains about stationary and ns a rule dealers are very well latlslled. Rubber goods nre now moving In good hnpe , UH the traveling men have been out for the last two weeks. As is usually the case , little dlfllculty Jn being experienced In getting orders from the dealers thnt arc In the habit of buying early , but a great munv merchants that ure inclined to be father conservative prefer tovnlt until Into In the scnson before plnclng orders. These nru the class of dealers that cause jobbers anxiety , but there arc undoubtedly fewer of them this yenr than usunl. Judging from the amount of dry goods that local jobbers arc selling , ono would think that every consumer In the country was going to' have a new outfit , and some of them two or three , trimmed In all kinds of gay colors. A great many merchants for this time , of year , are calling on the trade 'nnd Are bridging , thalr pocketbooks with them , but It Is the mull orders that are tkocplng the Jobber * . .the busiest. Prices remain practically Stationary and collec tions are exceptionally good. Prnlt and Produce. The warm weather thnt prevailed the greater part of last week brought more strawberries on the market than the com mission men knew what to do with and conseqently the price fell from (3.CO to (2.60 per crate on good shipping berries , while a great many were sola In the city as low as (1.60. This break , however , Is not surprising when the heavy receipts nre taken Into consideration. As a general thing If two cars nre received In a day It Is considered a heavy run. but Friday four cars came rolling In and the bottom naturally dropped out of tha market. The early part ot the week oranges were ready sellers , but the fall In the price ol berries stopped the sale of alt other kinds of fruit. The demand for cabbage Is becoming quite general for thin time of year and Is quoted At (2.25 to (2.60 per crate. The quotations on poultry , eggs and butter have not changed for many days , but a illght weakening Is beginning to be felt on eggs , owing to" the fact tnat they fell off a cent Ir. Kansas City , St. Louis and sev eral eastern points , The demand for cold storage Is probably what keeps them up at this market. Grass butter Is coming forward In small quantities , but , as la usually the case , this early In the spring , Is somewhat Inferior In quality , owing to the abundance of weeds In the castures. Odd goods are nlso reported some what firmer. The strength Is undoubtedly due to reports of a prospective curtailment of production. In other staple cotton lines there Is a quiet but steady demand re ported. Printed goods are In better shape under.pleasant weather conditions than was previously the case. Sales of staple calicos have been only fair. Glnghnma are In con tinued good demand and are very strong. Several lines have been advanced. Speculator * Are Waltlnir the Next Nnvnl Conflict. NEW YORK , May 14 , There was an ob vious disposition today In * speculative circles to leave the market alone pending the developments of the next move of the Spanish ; and American war vesseli. The outside Interest Inthe market was smalt. Coming In such a market the depression on the London Stock exchange , and the sel ling here for foreign account which re sulted , were very effective In depressing prices. London's quiet feeling was due to the plain speaking of the British secretary of state for the colonies , Mr. Chamberlain , as to the likelihood of European coalition against Great Britain. Apparently no ac count was taken by dealers In securities of the speaker's assurances that intervention In favor of Spain would not be assented to by Great Britain. In fact all considerations turned on the expected news from Admiral Sampson , and the depression In London would probably not have been effective here In a purely sympathetic way , but American securities offer a particularly good market Just now , so that forefgn holders were glad to realize on them. The markets were all absorbed In spite of the prevailing dullness and prices were , lifted above the London parity. The strength of Sugar on the ad vance of prices of the product , and the favorable bank statement hardened prices In the second hour and wrought a few net gains. Fractional net losses were the rule nt the close. The latter rtut of the week has seen a reaction In the stock market , but last prices are still substantially above those of last Saturday except In some of the specialties. Net galnn range from a fraction up to 4 points. The action of the market on the eve of the engagement with the Cape Verde squadron Is in contrast to the advance In prices In the three days before - fore news was heard from Commodore Dewuy. But to Justly estrniate the action of the market in the last three days It Is necessary to consider the motive of the great activity , and the large ndvnnce In the early part of the week. There wns In the first place the violent advance In wheat , which brought a large amount of specula tive profits to the stock market for a turn. For tho'sume reason the collapse In wheat affected stocks quite acutely because of the liquidations of profits Induced by the ef forts to cover margins In wheat. There was , In Ihe second placeme apparently reliable and generally accepted report thnt the SpnnUh Cape Verde fleet had returned to Cadiz. This seemed to argue an entire abandonment of Spain's AVest Indian pos sessions. This was caused by the report In explanation of the rally In Spanish 4s that the money to pay ino July coupons had been furnished byiPranch and Belgian bankers on the condltlo/i .that Spain should sue for peace. When , the TSpanlsn fleet wni definitely located nt 'Mrfrilnique , and the Spanish governmental Ishowed a dis position to make ai fmJhor aggresslvp move , even when the game seemed a des perate task , It wns hatwal thnt the up- wnrd course of prices viie , to those consid erations should halt nqd speculation pause to await n more definite development of the new conditions. The market has had to absorb continued offerings of American se curities for foreign account , due to the more stringent money conditions abroad nnd to the effort to Irnlllgate the demand for gold to settle excftataxe balances. The weekly statement of Ilia New York banks shows thnt Inst week the demand for funds from the Interior had"sdjfnr decreased as to make the money mark t easier , and there was an expansion of loans , the first since the Maine disaster. This week the demand for money from"the Interior has practically ceased and tname bankers re port that they have received shipments ol currency from their out-of-town corre spondents. Deposits have' Increased over $7,000,000 nnd loans and cash reserve have expanded so as to more than keep pace. Rates for time money collapsed to 304 per cent for periods as long as six months , and there Is active bidding for commercial paper at S to CH per cent. It Is evident that financial Institutions all over the country feel themselves amply provided for to meet the demand of customers In subscribing to the new government bonds If Issued. Nat urally gold has ceased to come from abroad Exchange has risen to $4. 5H per pounr sterling and Is being held instead ol drawn , as the money commands a higher rate abroad. The country's money supply has been vastly expanded and with the re turn of confidence and extension of credits there Is the likelihood of great Increase of Industrial and speculative activity. The bond market has moved In sympathy with Morku the Intirr pnrl of iho woek. showing Home reaction front earlier strength , United Htnti > 4s , new , advanced H per c nt , thn Ks nnd the old 4s , coupon , H Per cent nnd old 4s , registered , Vi per cent In the bid The Evening Post's London flnnnrlnt en- blegrnm : The stock mnrket hero opened flat todny on Colonial Secretary Chamber- Inln's speech nnd after a fecMo rnly closed I dull. For a Saturday there was a liberal run of stock. 179 ficsn rars being reported In the yards , ns against 172 yes- t PI day , 22i < one week ngo , ana 183 two weeks ngo. Today's cattle receipts were smaller than yesterday , but there were enough hogs to make up the dellclency. The weather wns somewhat unfavorable , there being : a lieavy fall of rain nil the week , which ren dered the yards very sloppy nnd caused them to bo deserted nt an early hour. CATTLE The receipts of cattle today were rather light , even for the last hist day of the week , being the smallest for any Sat urday since the tlrst week In April. With so few cattle to be hud and with the dc > mnnd quite nctlvo for the Inst of the week the buyers were not long In effecting n clearance nnd practically everything was sold early In the morning nnd the yards deserted. The prices paid for fat cattle were strong as compared with yesterday nnd the trade fairly active. As was noted yesterday the advance during the last half of the week ban very nearly made up for the decline during the early part of the week , nnd the nmrket Is now almost as good as It wns nt the cloBo of last week. Some would say that It Is fully ns Rood , nnd It probably Is on at least some kinds of cattle. Cows nnd heifers also sold nt Rood , strong prices and the trade was active on thu few loads offered for sale. This has been a great week for the holders of cow stuff , at least the latter part of the week , and It Is safe to say that there has not been n time within a year or more when that kind of stock sold uny better than It has during the last two days. The buyers want the cuttle , nnd the question of price docs not nppcar to enter very largely fnto the ques tion. A very noticeable Improvement has token plnee within the Innt few dnys In the market for cnnners , due In part per haps to the Inrge purchases of canned beef by the government for use In the army and navy. > ' The trade In stockcrsnnd feeders hds been light all the week. While on some dnys there have been plenty of half-fat cattle that might sell as feeders , stock cat tle have been In Btnnll supply nil the week , nnd for that reason business was light , though there was considerable Inquiry for desirable kinds on the part of buyers. Still there wns n good run for a Saturday , especially In view of ( Tie fact that there were more hogs here today than have been In the yards on any other day this week. The market from a seller's point of view was bad , In that prices were decidedly lower. Still the break was anticipated yes terday when provisions slumped at the clone of the day's trad I HIT. The trade In hogs today opened unevenly lower and Boon settled down to an average decline of about 16c. Some hogs sold pos- stblv no more than lOc lower , while on others 20c was taken off. The hos sold very largely at (4.20j < 4.25. as against 34.35 yesterday. In other words , n. large proportion tion of yesterday's advance wns lost , though the average of nlj the sales was still n little higher than It wns on Thurs- dar. dar.The * buyers seemed to want the hogs at the decline , but the trade as n whole was n little slow owlnir to the reluctance of salesmen to make the concession demanded. The present week has witnessed a wild hog market , prices have fluctuated wildly , but mostly on the side or higher prices. At the opening hogs were selling at this point on an average nndcr (3.90. On Tues day the average of all the sales was about 6c higher , and on Wednesday values were a shade better. On Thursday there was an advance that averaged over 20c , taking Into consideration nil the sales for the day , and was followed by n 15o advance on Friday , which carried the market to the high point of the week and to the highest point reached by thin market since September. 1893. Today's decline leaves the market still 32'/4c higher than It was a week ago. Rep resentative sales : Av. 8h.
