Wheat Taken a Remarkable Boom and

NUMEROUS CAUSES PRODUCE THE RESULT

i CHICAGO , May 5. Ono dollar and fifty
cents per bushel was the price of May
wheat at the end of today's scsilon ot the
Hoard of Trade. This represents an nd-
\anco nlnce yesterday of 20 cents. July
v. boat Dallied 3 5-Sc. Today's advance was
tlio tnoifremarkablo In many years. Fam
ine of craln abroad and enormous ( tales of
American wheat to fill the empty crnna-
llos of Europe caused the advance here.
Khortt were driven to cover und ono small
failure was announced. Corn ruled dull ,
cloning Vic higher. Oats gained > c. Pro-
\.alons ( were dull , declining Be for pork and
7ic ! each for lard and libs.
Liverpool net the ball rolling In the wheat
market by reporting another sensational
nd\anco there nt the opening , the gain In
July , comiiared with Iho previous day's
closing quotation , being equal to about 7o
u bushel. The reason for the Liverpool ad-
\itii.o ( was , of course , the continental com
petition for the wheat cargoes arriving off
the coast In the United Kingdom nnd the
L-n-aler activity of French and Antwerp
Importer ! to secure them. The grain du
ties having now been abolished In France ,
Italy nnd Spain leaves those countries to
illapute with the United Kingdom for pos-
t-ttslon of the wheat ns It arrives oft coast
on the other side. The extreme Hcnriity
ubroad , so clearly shown by the removal
of the duties , justifies apparently the full
comlctlon with which Lc-Iter started In
litBt July to buy wheat. The continental
nationsby , throwing oft the Import duties ,
heiinlngly admit that their own stocks
lia\o been practically exhausted. Active
( ompetltlon at Liverpool hits caused a
rapid advance there for the last week , bul
the full force of the famine was not felt
In IhU market until today. At the prts-
nt tlmo July option Is the active specu
lative month nnd bears have sold freely ,
o.xpcctlnr to fill their contracts out of the
new crop. Ilut the May option appears
to be controlled entirely by Joseph Lelter
who. If today's market can be taken us an
indication , holds the few who are still short
to him in a "death grip. " The market
opened at nn advance of 1 cent for Jul >
Jind to for May. As usual the pit traders
hold and July wheat started ut 99 5-ie , soli

In addition Lclter sold 750,000 bushels In odi
lots. This remarkable transaction set th
lilt wild. May wheat , which had rallied ti
the opening price , S1.37 , Jumped to Sl.EC
with 2 and 3 cents between sales. Th
trade was not broad by any means. 1
simply meant that somebody had been
caught short nnd was trying to get ou
regardless of the cost. At Sl.W Lcite
brokers stopped the advance by selling ;
few small lots , but the market close

apparently weighted down with receipts of
iiogs at western markets ; numbering 77,000
head , compared with 65,000 last year. Trade

NEW YORK , May 5. Professional oper
ators all turned bulls today , after a briel
period of doubt and hesitancy after the
opening of the Stock exchange As a. mat
ter of fact the- were forced into this posl
tlon by the unmistakable temper of the outside
, side public , manifested by their dlspositlor
to come Into the : market and buy stock
; In large blocks at the markpt price. Thi
;
professional operators were made somewhal
,
wary by the failure of the London markei
to show any Independent Interest in Ameri
can securities yesterday , while Wall street
, was taking a holiday. The same element
, , were apparently rather suspicious of thi
advance In London before the opening hen
, this morning , and were disposed to attrlbuti
It to manipulation from this bide. Price
here failed to respond "at the opening t
the London advance , and ruled below th
London parity for a considerable time. Tin
market was full of outside buying orders
and business was on a large scale , but hai
a very heavy burden profit-taking sale
to carry , and the small opening gains wen
In large part wiped out during tbo firs
hour. The reaction here failed to impal
the confidence In London , where American
continued active nnd strong" Ttie buylni

operators who had taken profits on Tuesda
and this morning by an apprehension tha
the rise wan progressing too fast , felt re

accorded by the public , and turned buyer
of stocks again. The market presented th
characteristics of the rampant bull spirit
From tlmo to tlmo the general strength wa

there wan a disposition for business to Ian

seeking out obscure stocks which had no

also a conspicuous feature of the trading i

buoyancy of the market beyond the genert
conviction that Spain's capacity to can

the danger of any serious Impairment c
this country's prosperity by reason of th

10 country roads have been rendered
"most Impassable by the continuous laln-
ill which has c\tended far west , and the
ily reason that receipts have not shown
eavy reductions before this Is accounted
or by the fact that the market has been

CATTLE With only about twenty-eight
inds of fresh cattle of all'kinds In the
ards there was not much upon which tease
aso a market und the trade partook
tgely of the nature of a Saturdays
mrket. Possibly It was just as well that
he receipts should be light , as there has
een a heavy run this week und the Hup
eon a heavy run this week nnd the letup
As is very apt to be the case when the
ecelpts nro so light , there was very little
n the way of Interesting features nnd not
much to say of the trade ns a whole. The
uyers seemed to want the cattle nnd were
tiling to take them nt just about steady
rices. In some Instances , possibly , killing
attlo that were especially desirable may
ave brought moro money than yesterday ,
ut as a general thing It would be suf-
clent to call It a good , steady market ,
omo choice little cattle sold as high as
1.70 , and some good heifers brought SI 25.
There were np stock cattle of any account
n the yards and nothing of Importance was
olng In that department.
Over 500 cars of cattle have been received
t this point so far this week , as .igalnst
48 for the cot responding four da > s of
ast week. In the face of such a large
un It la really surprising In what good
hape the market has been. On Monday
alues were lower under the Influence of
lie decline at eastern points , but since that
Ime the tendency has been rather upward
wing to the very active local and shipping
em.ind which has kept the yards well
leared. Representative sales :

HOGS Receipt * of hogs today were
smaller than yesterday by one-half , and
with the exception of Monday's , the
smallest of any day In several weeks. The
quality averaged up very well with previous
days arrivals. Early advices were rather
unfavorable , Indicating as they did we.ik
markets at other selling points and In ad
dition to that was the further fact that
provisions did not show much strength
yesterday. To offset these bear Influences
there was a very good local nnd shipping
demand which , in connection with the light
receipts , created a strong market. The
buyers all seemed to want hogs and In view
of the few to be had they were all out
early and the trade opened with values
strong to EC higher. It did not take buyer *
long to clean up the yards and later train"
changed hands on arrival. The hogs sokl
very largely at S3 951(4 00 , as against S3 wn
3 95 yesterday. As high as (4.03 was paid
for choice heavy hogs. A close examina
tion of weights for a few days back will
show that medium weight hogs have beer
crowing In favor and are not discriminated
against to such an extent as was the case
a while back. In other words Hghtei
weights have been gradually coming up.
This * was In reality the high day of the
year to date. On February 21 the nverngt
price paid for hogs was just about th <
same as today , but nothing on that date
brought more than S4 00 , and there were
only two loads at that , so that today' !
market was really higher. Some of the
buyers who were commenting upon thi
fact of this being the high day of the yeai
so far , added that It would also be the high
day for the next six weeks to come. Buy.
ers , however , have been predicting lowei
prices for some time bark and still th <
market has gradually crawled upward , sc
It remains to be seen whether they ar <
right even now. Representative sales :
