All told , there weie rOO loads of
stock In the yards , a considerable fall
ing off , ns compared with yesterday , but
still a rood run oven for a Wednesday.
The markets , in a whole , were In very
satisfactory condition for sellers , and prac
tically everything In the yards w.is sold
and weighed up In good season. It may bo
Inferred from that fact that values were
strong to higher all 'around , and that was
the cnse.
CATTLK U would seem that there has
been a sudden Increase In the capacity of
the market to take cattle. Yesterday's
very large run was followed by liberal ro-
cclplH again today , U7 fresh loads being
reported In , but corrtrnry to what might
have been expected the market was active
and higher.
Thu demand for corn-fed steers was
largo , both local and for shipping account ,
and , as was the casu yesterday , every one
bought fieely. Huyers were especially
hungry after handy little cattle , and the
olYcilngs of juch sold readily at an ad
vance of about lOo , while the general mar
ket on f.it cattle could safely be quoted 5e
to 10j higher. As hns been the rule right
nlomr the heavy cattle were not us free
sellerj ns JlL'ht cattle , but still they felt
the Improvement In the market , though
not to as great a degree as the more de-
hlrable kinds. Practically everything sold
In good senson.
Butchers' stock was nlio In active de
mand , but the supply was small , and buy-
'crs ' had to travel fa Uand look sharp to fill
orders. The market , ' In consequence , was
active on good killlnK < coWii and heifers und
Sc to lOc higher. Atn ng-the offerings were
some choice spuytsA ? Jitilfers. Everything
wns cleaned up InapiW 'feafcon .
There fs not milWsitf.mny--reTWdlng tbo
market on stockerjrMfcd feedersr So few
stock cattle are arflVinK that It Is no easy
matter to make coniPirlsons' ! but one thing
Is certain , nnd that'ls'tlial good cattle are
bringing way up pflciM. The demand does
not appear to be sv.fvery large , but there
Is some Inquiry all Jhetlme , nnd as only a
few are coming , the lupply Is kept well
cleaned , up. The fax-t-that , money Is easing
up , and that parties'who were completely
shut oft at the breaking out of war , have
been notified dUrlife'the last two or three
days that they could lulvo money , will have
a strong tendcncylto help the market on

MADniD. May 4. The Increased censor-
hip nnd thd cnullons Issued by Ocnornl
Uaban In reference to the publishing of
news , etc. , causes Kl Nndotml to oxclnlm :
What Is Inking place In the. tclcRrnphlc
service Is truly scanilalous. As far as
provincial correspondents nto concorncil ,
"the bhick cabinet" hat seldom worked BO
thoroughly an at the present moment , when
It depends on n minister who calls himself
a liberal.
This Irritation Is sharply provoked by the
Kovernmcnt's suppression of facts ns to the
battle at Manila. Commenting upon It El
Naclonal. which Is the organ of the Weyler-
tte party , says :
Yesterday , when the first Intelligence ar
rived , nothing better occurred to Admiral
Dermejo , minister of marine , than to send
to all the newspapers comparative statistics
of the two contending squadrons. Uy this
comparison he sought to direct publlo at
tention to the Immense superiority of n
squadron of Ironclads over a squadron of
wooden vessels , dried up by the. heat In
that latitude.
Spain undoubtedly sees therein the heroIsm -
Ism of our marines , but It sees also , and
above all , the nefarious crime of the gov
ernment. It Is unfair to blame the enemy
for possessing forces superior to purs , but
what Is worthy of being blamed'with all
possible vehemence Is this Infamous gov
ernment who allowed our Inferiority.
With reference to the catastrophe El
Naclonal continues :
A good battery on Corregldor Island , with
great reflectors and guns capable of sweep
ing the seas for miles around , would have
kept the American squadron out of the bay.
In Corrcgldor there were only a few
wretched guns , taken from the war ships a
fnw days ago. This Is the truth. Our sail
ors have been basely delivered over to the
crapeshot of the Yankees , a fate nobler and
moro worthy of respect than those baneful
ministers who brought about the llrst vic
tory and Its llrst victims.
Kl Heralilo tic Madrid nays :
It was no caprice of the fortunes of war.
From the first cannon shot our fragile ships
were at the mercy of the formidable hostllo
squadron. They were condemned to fall ,
one after the other , before the powerful
fire of American batteries and were defended -
fended only by the valor In the breasts of
their sailors.
What has been gained by the Illusion that
Manila was fortified ? What Is gained by
the Intimation that the broad and beauti
ful bay , on whose bosom the Spanish fleet
perished yesterday , had been rendered In
accessible ? What use was madu of the
famous Island of Corregldor ? Where were
Its guns ? Where were Its torpedoes ?
Where were those defensive preparations
oncoming which wo were requested to
ceep silence ?
El Hcraldo , referring further on to the
xtent of the disaster , says :
We cannot define It. The government has
ot dcllncd It for the Information of the
ountry , and , although the greater i-ortlon
f yesterday's cabinet council was devoted
o the subject , the government hna failed
o Issue even n note , leaving us In IRIIO-
JDCO as to this fateful event. There Is
othlng rash In the suspicion that the gov-
rnment's attitude Is a" dcslro to hide a part
f the truth. This , however , Is a baneful
ulstake.
El Liberal demands that Parliament In-
st on having light thrown on the causes
f the Manila disaster. It pays :
Those of whom , In those columns , we
lave requested an explanation of the ocult
auscs which have brought about the cat-
strophe of Manila have met our demands
Ith silence. They have employed force to
ilenco those who In the streets have pro-
ested against the real authors of our great
ilsfortune , and for this Imvc proclaimed a
tatc of stogc.
Our eyes would Indeed be full of tears , nnd
ur souls filled with sadness , but our vital
orco would not be weakened If wo were
ertaln that the destruction of our Phlllp-
Ino squadron , and the glorious death of Its
rewa were attributable solely to war's
Iclssltudcs.
Wo have not even this consoling certl-
, udc. Unfortunately , wo arc all depressed
Ith a presentiment that the disaster of
unday will bo repeated In other places ,
wing to the same causes. This suspicion ,
mbodlcd In the public conscience , docs not
How the investigation of the accusation ,
nd. If necessary , the punishment be dc-
nyed.
Our fahcrland requires Us soldiers to flilit
without analyzing the risk , but not that
hey should do this under conditions of
horrible Inferiority and while employing
reapons deprived of their edge.
El Heralclo further Bays :
Even a numerical advantage would have
been utterly useless without guns of larger
allber , without protection and without
means of gaining a speed equal to the
ncmy's ships. It la not a question of num-
> ers , but of the quality of the war ships.
Ye nro certain that Admiral Montejo him-
elf , and the brave officers .of his squadron ,
did not entertain 'one moment's hope of
Ictory. Wo have reasons for believing that
he admiral over nnd' aver again draw the
government's attention to the Insufficiency
of his forces and resources , and repeated
hese warnings In unmistakable terms 1m-
ncdlately after the declaration of war.

A young man with a specimen of the "now

the most exacting demands , relates the New

tion of the adornment of his upper lip may
have been wonderful to thd persons who
knew what It meant , the unlnfp'fMcd mubt

made Its appearance In London , nnd la so
similar In design to the butterfly tlo scon
there four or five yaars ago that the persons
who remember what those tics looked Ilka
will readily bo able to picture to them
selves this new mustache. It Is-very nar
row In the center nnd spreads out toward
each end. The specimen nt thn Logerot
the other evening was dark , and according
to all published descriptions , diagrams anil
Illustrations that have been seen hero It
was perfect. For that reason the objection
of a cavalier who looked at It superciliously
was difficult to understand.
"Those mustaches about which London
Is talking Just at present have been com
mon In Germany nnd Austria for years , "
ho said , "and they nro worn In the army
by the young men who want to bo schncldlg ,

to develop.

tlshtly over the mustache , which Is either
thoroughly wet or In sumo cases made fast
with a thin solution of gum arable. The
mustache In this form has been popular
with the fashionable men In the German
and Austrian armies for several years and
has come to be one of the distinguishing
marks of this set In the army. Probably
the mustaches seen In London were on for
eigners who were there on leave.
"The sort of men among the Hermans or
Austrian * who would cultivate UIORO mus
taches are the kind that are dressed by the
boat of London tailors , and they might
readily have been mistaken for Englishmen.
I don't believe that moro than two or three
\vere seen thorn at any time. They take
too long to glow. At least six months Is
required to turn out even n moderately
effective one.
"Tho fact that the 'now mustache' Is nnt
confined wholly to any one nationality H
shown by any picture of IVAnnunzlo taken
before ho had grown a board. He had for
several years worn Just such n mustache.
It Is familiar In continental Europe among
all well dressed men nnd Is probably less )
known In England than In any other coun
try. I fancy that this chap at the other
table got the Idea for his from a visit to
Carlsbad. To anybody not accustomed to
the genuine article hln mustache might bo
Impressive enough. Hut to the experienced
It seems rather a poor specimen. "
