usual of late for a Monday. The gain was
entirely In cattle , hois being In abaut the
Ubital supply. The weather was dark and
threatening and the markets as a rule late.
CATTL.U It is said that the expected bd
dom happens , but it camu to pass o
schedule time today. Last week sellers
vvi'iu expressing the fear that the Imiirove-
ment In cattle would bring a ilood of re
ceipts this week and that there would be a
big break In values that would offset the
( jams already made. Sure enough , all mar
ket pjlnts reported liberal inns for the first
of Hie week , thu at rivals at this point being
double what they were on any Monday las
month.
The most of the- cattle here were corn
fed beeves , with only a very slight sprlnk
ling of cow stuff and sto.c" " < cattle. Whlli
the large offeilngs of steers was a feature
of weakness , the reported decline of lOu emote
mote at other points was the chief causi
for buyers bidding lower. The opening bid
were all of lOc lower and if the cattle weri
not partlculaily deslrab'.e buyers were Jus
as apt to bid 15c lower. Sellers were rathe
backward about making all the concosslor
that was asked and III ? first half hour o
the forenoon passed with very little bein.

go over the scales , but the trade on steer
was , as a whole , very slow and dragjry.
In the end the handy light steers sold a
prices that were not much different from
Saturday , but heavy cattle were at least lOc
lower and hard to sell at any price. Ir
fact cattle that were not particularly de
slrable were almost unsalable and at mid
! day there were still a gjod many remalnln
unsold.
The supply of cows and heifers was verj
light in proportion to the total offerings o
cattle , and , as there was about the usua
demand , the market on that kind ot stuf
did not show much change from last week'
prices. It would , In fact , be safe to quoti
desirable cows and hslfers as fully steady
and , while the market was not so ver ;
active , the offerings all changed hands li
good season. There is a steady demand a
this point for butchers' stock , and , as th
supp'.y Is seldom larger than required t
- 1111 orders , the market on that kind of cattl
does not fluctuate so readily as does the
market on steers.
: Thera-were some half fat cattle that were
- about right fpr feeders , but very few d-
slrable stock cattle. Regular yard oper
- ators were pretty good buyers , ua they did
not have many cattle on hand , and as there
seems to be a reeling among a good many
that the market on stock cattle la on the
point of Improvement. As to values , there
was no material change , or at least none
