STOCKS \MJ ilOXIlS.
Mnrl.el In Without Tone nml TrntiH-
ncMloitsi Are Small.
NEW YORK , April 27. Today's stock market
was almost entirely without lane. Transactions
were not greatly In excess of the smallest day's
business In the blttory of tha exchange , the ag
gregate of all sales footing up only 61,000 share * .
The market drifted aimlessly and over a very
narrow range. Such usually volatile specialties
as Sugar and Metropolitan Street Hallway covered
ft range , of leti tiian 94 during the whole day.
A laise number of stocks which almost always
llgure In the day's tradingliavo not a single
sale recorded -for tjcm. A fewstocks 'moved
quite widely , on account of special tauses , but
the volume of buflnecs even with these was
small. Canadian 1'acine a l Northern 1'acltlc
stok9 moved up tojether from the same cause ,
namely , news prevalent In London that the
northwestern rate war Is about to be hettlcd.
Canadian 1'aclflc's net Bain Is 2i nnd Northern
I'aclllo a point. The strength of these stocks
really gave a tone to the whole market. General
Electric f honed strength on the showing made
by Its annual statement. Kansas City , 1'lttsburs
bywa Quit recovered 2VI of yesterday's low , which
was said to be due to apprehension that Its ter
minal port on the gulf would be closed by the
war. Hawaiian commercial recovered 4 points
of Its recent Insse ? , which.were mid to l due
towa apprehension that Its stock" of sugar In transit
was liable It ) capture. Arbitrage dealers fold
most of the International stocks , but bought no
Northern Pacltlc. Transactions were Inflgnld-
cant. Dullness In stocks was no doubt due In
pa to the transfer of speculative Interest to
th < wheat market. Conditions In the money
market teemed to be working to an eailer liasls.
Call loans at the banks , which hold out for 4
per cent , are being repaid , as mono * can be had
for lers than that In the street , nnd time loans
nn said to be made at less than' C per cent.
The demand for funds from the Interior con
tinued , but It Is not aa large as. early In the
Jvm . TCic Increase In rates checked the de
mand : for sterling. Tii bond market was In
tensely In sympathy with th flocks and prices
were held about rteady. Total Bales. 4DcO.OOO.

with a small speculative Inquiry here. Kafllrs
were better on the reported reduction of the
dynamite rates In tlic Transvaal. The difficulties
Inbe the West Australian market have not yet
been EettleJ. Another failure was announced
today. I nni Informed on excellent authority
that a * a result of the It-ink of England's policy ,
as recently told In these dispatches , In making
advances of free Interest , 1,5W,00 In col.l has
already been secured , of which one-half has
In-en received , the remainder belns expected In
th next few day * . Today's Receipt of bar sold
at the bank Is the flr.t for the last two years ,
The London discount market would be easier
but - for the fact that on SIny 7 more than 12-
CW 000 of the Chinese Indemnity money to 4 > !

There wns a very fair run of stock again
today , about 260 ears being counted in the
yards. The arrivals of cattle nnd hogs
were about the same us yesterday , whlu'ii
was liberal for the middle of thu week.
Tne markets as a whole were in fair condi
tion and the most of the offerings sold
oatly. In fact , with the exception of the
hog market everything sold at steady
t3 strong prices.
CATTLB-The offerings of cattle wore lib
eral for a Wednesday , something over ISO
leads beingon sale. As usual at this sea L-
son the most of t'no cattle here consisted Lf >
cornfed steers , but there was also quite a
sprinkling- stock cattle and butchers'
stuff.
Ihe quality of the cornfed beeves
on sale did not come up to the aver
age of yesterday's run , t'nat Is , there
xvero not so many fair to good cattle |
and a much larger proportion of un
desirable stuff , Tlu > market opened
with a fair shipping as well n-s local de
mand and the early trade on handy cattle
was strong to GInCc higher lit extreme
cases. For a time the market was in very
gocd condition and the alleys were soon
crowded with cattle mavlng toward t'ne '
scales. Coarse and undesirable steers were
at no time any higher , t'nouRh the feeling
was undoubtedly better on all kinds. After
the more desirable cattle had changed hands
and there was not much left that the ship
pers would care to compete for , t'uo trade
slackened up and the strength nnd activity
of the morning disappeared.
The feeling on cow stuff was also better
and dcslrablo cows nnd heifers were active
sellers at a little stronger prices. The
offerings of that kind of stock for the most
part sold early. Hulls and stags weretut
In such large supply as yesterday , but they
were ' rather slow sellers today ut no more
t'nan steady prices. Veal calves continue
In good demand and the few coming meet
with ready sale at good prices , the best
sellingat $ G.OOSC.73 , as will b-a noted from
the sales.
There were quite a good many stock cat
tle In the yards today , more than has been
t\ie case on a good many days of late.
The market on stockers and feeders Is
not expected to show muc'n change Just at
present , but those -who had the most cattle
claimed that the feeling today was a little
batter owingto the more healthy condition
of the fat cattle market. Representative
