In Slutrelnli nnd .Muioxt SlfiKimnt. NKW YORK , April 24. The market for re- curltles was sluggish nnd almost stagnant to day. Prices ruled below Saturday's close and while there was a brief pause at one time dur ing the morning In the downward course , due to strength shown by one or two of the Indus trials , the sagging tendency of the market was practically uninterrupted. The trading was nar row and professional and declines really repre sented nothing more than a natural reaction from Saturday's advance. The supply of stocks continued limited , owners apparently being con- ter.t to hold their property for higher prices. Neither Is there any active demand for stocks at the present level. The conwquence Is that the movement of price * Is rather narrow. There belli ? no genuine demand for stocks and no real pressure of liquidation prices naturally lose one iliy what they R.ilned the day before , or gain the next day what .they lose today. There was come felling In IMf market to.lay for London account , which may have represented liquida tion by timid foreign holders. There wns quite a wide movement of prices In some of the high- priced Industrial cveclaltles. Otherwise the mar ket was In the hands of the room triders. The waiting attitude of trader * U likely to continue until the occurrence of come event giving a clear Indication of the course or probable dura tion of rhf war with Spiln The future stock market Is lo dependent largely on the course of the money market. There was nothing to Indicate accurately what that course will be. There was tome demand for currency from the Interior , Chicago exchange falling today to a discount. The subtreatury alro litucd a notice that It would receive no further depclts on account of shipments of currency from Washing ton or of telegraphic transfer * to any point. The transfers of this character today amounted to VM.Ooo. and In view of the depletion of the treasury's supply of currency and good supply of gold the above notice was made necessary. There was no change In time money or com mercial paper , although money continued to be fairly well supplied. No apprehension was ex pressed of stringency In the Immediate future. There was a sbirp advance in the foreign ex change rates , demand sterling bills rising H per cent. There Is no active demand for ex change , but the stocks Which had accumulated In New York had been largely worked oft by the Importation of gold. The gold Import move , ment has for the moment evidently ceased , though any active demand for money. It Is believed , would promptly bring about Its re sumption. The bond market was very dull today and prices drifted to a lower level. Total sales , IS75.000. It being a fair run for t'ne first day of the week. The rain was In hogs , there being n falling oft n both sheep and cattle. While values on ome kinds of stoekvwere lower the market .s a whole was In fair condition , that Is here was a demand equal to t'ne offerings nd the pens were pretty well cleared and n good season. CATTLE There were only fifty cars of inttle In the yards , as against sixty a week go and sixty-seven two weeks ago. Ill ther words , It was a light run for the .rst day of the week , and It might be In- erred from t'nat fact that shippers are n lit- le afraid ot the market nt the present Ime , and are Inclined to wait until packers enow more about what to expect , und are eady tD buy more freely. While no one ran form any reliable Idea of what the : uture of the market will be during the next , 'ew days , It would seem to be prudent to < eep near to shore and await events. Bot'n shippers and packers were operating n today's market , but the demand wns mly of moderate proportions , and no one ippeared to want any great number. The eellng , 'however , was somewhat better as egards tidy little cattle and 'the ' offerings if such generally met with quite ready sale nt strong prices. In fact. It would be safe o call the market on that kind of cattle itlOc 'nlgher In extreme cases. Medium .velght . cattle were about steady , selling In about the same notches as on Saturday , but heavy and coarse cattle were us slow nnd dragBV " as at any time , and If anything "ower. Desirable butchers' stock was In fair re quest , and sold generally In good season at prices not materially different from those laid on Saturday. There were not many ; oed cows nnd heifers , but a few of 1'iie utter sold up to $4.10. Stockers and feeders were In very moder- nle supp'.y , but there were a great plenty. The fact Is that the sale for stock cattle nt the present time Is very limited , owing to the falling off In the country demand. Karmers are generally busy In the Holds and 'nave something of more Importance In hand than the buying of cattle. The de pressed condition of the beef market has undoubtedly had some effect also In the way of limiting country demand , us the out look Just at present Is not particularly brlc'nt. Whatever may have been the causes , the fact remains that there Is only a small buying demand for stock cattle nnd values in consequence have gradually fallen of their own weight. Today's trade was only n sample of other days of recent date. Representative sales : STKERS. No. Av. Pr. tfa. Av. Pr. No , Av. In fact. It wan the largent run In a long time for a Mondiy. It would appear that th tils Imlije on Thurs day and Friday attracted the attention of ship. | K > ra and started the hogs to coming. Duyem however , have been predicting that a larger run of hogs wsuld tet in very teen , and possibly It U already commencing. Tiie avenue quality of the receipts today was very good , that la there were a number or right choice loads of heavy and butcher weight hogs among the offerings and not many very poor loads. Weak to 5o lower was the way advices from other gelling points rend , and the buyer * at this point started out bidding about 5c lower , but they did not fcure many loads on that bans. Ttia general market wax only a shade lower an drearoiubly active at the decline. The buy ers evldentiy wanted the hogs and were ready ID take all that they could set at the prices , but fellers were Inclined lo hold on pretty hard for steady prlcei , so that n complete clearance was not effected as foon as might otherwise hive been tha cafe. A few loads of light and traihy stuff Fold under 13.70 , but good mixed loads generally brought 13.7003 72' , with good heavy and butcher weights telling up to J3.M. On Saturday there were a few loads at (3.60 , so that the tup tuday \vaa no lower. The big bulk of all the hogs , however , sold on Saturday at the same range as today , that Is at )3.70i3.75 , but the proportion o fsalea at the bottom figures was much larger todar. The week opens with hogs polling about 12Hc hlpher than at the opening of last week , but only ai shade higher than two weeks ago. The market today was only lOc lower than a year ago.
