her abode for the ytar round take on a

of bare floors and rugs. But the subjett

much-quoted recipe first get your bare
floor.
After taking account cf stock In the way
of floors , It will usually be found In the
ordloary house that there la much to be
desired , but a little effort will de something
toward putting an orJInarr flcor Into good
condition. If there are large cracks It will
'be found advisable to fill them with thin
strips of wood , but If they are small they
may be filled la with putty , which will not
show 'when patated.

the cracks filled In carefully , or the house

face secured , they must be thoroughly

"When the floor hss dried after the scrub ,

must bo applleJ carefully , as the effect of

Am ordinary oak sta.'n can be used , lighter
or dark , as may be. desired , followed by a
coat of varnish put on with a flat bruah.
The varnish must not be put on until the
stall Is quite dry. It should bo mixed with
a quick -dryer , which the painter or "decora
tor will prepare. Jt Is necessary not to
mark tbo varnish while it is fresh.
Another method to 'be used with smooth
boards is to apply two ccata of very dark
oak utaln after the floor lias been scrubbed
and dried and then polish. This polish can
bo used on any stalnoJ floor.
To make it , melt some beeswax over the
flro , stirring acme turpentine Into it at the
sametime. . .When , It li of the consistency
of stiff paste put It Into a stone Jar. Apply
a little of thli mlxlure , while- warm , with
a firm , smooth , dry scrubbing brush , which
should bo kept for the purpose. The floor
la to ba rubbed briskly as if polishing boota ,
taking an arm's length at a time from the
corner where tht > work Is begun.
A floor polished In this way needs re-
treatment once in three or four weeks. The
frottolr , which ! s used abroad to polish floors ,
U a great labor saver , and brings desired
results much sooner tran any 'thcr method.
