CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Jobbers Give Favorable AccounU of the Week's ' Tracsictions. RETAILERS ARE PLEASED WITH RESULTS * VnlnrN on Mnny Coininndlllen Slicirr Tendency < lAtlt mice I.oenl llnnk ClrurltiKN llnkc Very Sutlufnctor- While the rains on one or two days may r" bo ald to have * Interfered to some extent with the movement of merchandise In con- mimlriK channels , ths week as a whMe was uf a character entirely pleasing to the busi ness Interests of the city. Hetnllcrs In all reasonable lima have only good words to way regarding present conditions nnd al most cvcrjono appears to bo comfortably buay. Money In the hands cf consumers appears to be fairly plentiful nnd there oetms to bo a general willingness to part with It. A vast Improvement Is noted In the ilamnml for merchandise th.it for sev eral years has been slow rale , such as furniture , cat'pe B , etc. The people of the city nnd neighboring tcivns arc refurnish ing ttulr house * < uui putting Hum In shape to r'colvo visitors thu coming summer. In fact the demand just nt present Is so largo thnt It Is no easy mutter for local lurnl- ture and carpet houses to k ip pice- with It nnd deliver the goods fast enough to tncot wishes of customers. In a jobbing way there Is also a very Bntlsfaclory bu lness doing , which Is fully iual U whit dealers loik for nt this sea- Bon of the year. Just at theprraent tlrna country huvers are very busy and accord ingly the country rctnll trade H not quite FO brisk as It was a few weeks ago. every thing , hei.Vi.vcr , njirie'iis to b ; In En Isfac- < ory sh.ipo as regards merchandising In terests In general , though as n matter ot course the wnr ere ites some uncertainly nnd act.s us a disturbing fnc'cr In values. Local bank clearings o ntlnuc to show heavy gains over a y nr ago , thus Indi cating1 that theret Is a very material gain In the volume of buslncta doing. LUMIinil IMSS ACTIVE. As noted a meek ago the. wholetvilo d < - ni.uiil for lumber Is not so brisk as It vvas a Hhort time ago , but that Is eMily an Inci dent to ths season , March being always a better mon'h than April. If a compirl- non Is made , between now and n year fo the showing -would be entlre.y to the ad vantage of the present year. In a retail iway there Is an enormous Iccal dcm ind for lumber thnt keeps every yard In the cl y i bustllrtf ? with activity. There Is ranily a good e ! aJ more building going on In Otnah.x than one might suppose ho had n5t given close attention to the subjec' . VALUES ADVANCING. 1'rlces of wholesale groceries continue to have an upward tendency. This Is esp - cl illy true of the su ? ir market , ns several advances have taken u'.ice In the. last three or four d.ajp. Quo atlons rule from 1-10 to 'ic high r than last week , the advance . varying with the grade. The- general ' "opinion sccim-i to bo that prices i 111 K3 still higher. Farinaceous gools arc also on the Incline , especially bean" , 'which are reported. lOQIGc per bushul higher than 11 week ago. The coffee- market reimnln * practically Bti-ady In Hplte of the enormous demand. Jobbers report the.1 heaviest trade- that thev have ever experienced In this line and say that It Is caused by country merchants stocking up In anticipation cf the proposed duty , which | Alll proliablv amount t about H cents per ( pound. It Is of course a matter of itpeeul.Ulon ns to whether the duty If levied will apply to s oc'.rs already on hand or only to the Incoming supply , but dealers In general se c < in to bo of the opinion that the pr.ncnt stock will not be taxed. The proposal duty on tea and tobacco lias caused a heavy demand for the'iC Roods as well Several brands of tobacco have already advanced 2f ? . ° ic per pound and It Is expected thnt clgitri UC1I have an ad ditional lax of $ J to H pei 1 COO California dtled fruits arc likewise on the advance. A faw weeks ao apricot * , IHiichc * and prunes advanced , owing to the severe frost In California , and now they nre being quoted higher because of the drouth. It Is said th it the dry weather Is having more effect upon the market than the cold wave had. The grocery trade ns a whole wns of n very satisfactory character the Inst week nnd Joblxors report that in many cises dllllculty was experienced In tilling orders ( promptly because of the great demand for Immediate delivery. DUV GOODS UNCHANGnD. Very little chanpo Is taking place In the wholesale dry goods niaikct. Prices are not fluctuating and the volume of business transacted from week to week varies but little. At present liberal orders for fall stocks are coming In rapidly , which shows that country merchants arc expecting a big business. There la also considerable demand for spring and summer goods owing to duplicate orders. Reports from hardware Jobbers Indicate still further falling off In the demand for their class of goods. They say , however , thnt this Is not an unusual condition , as pleasant weather at this season of the jcar always has the same effect. When the farmers get their crops planted an Im provement Is looked for. In spite of the rather slow condition of the market there Is still a shortage In the supply of screen door netting , poultry netting und steel eoods. lloot and shoe Jobbers are not particularly rushed for this season of the year. Their traveling men are on the road and are meeting with fair success. A decided Im provement Is noted over last year and consequently jobbers feel pretty well satis- fled. WHOLESALE FRUIT AND PRODUCE. In the produce market the demand for staple goods Is very satisfactory , but any thing In the line of fancy goods does not seem to be In very active demand. Oranges nnd strawberries nro In good request , but apples nro scarce and high and for that reason not very fast sellers. Vegetables aru unusually low for this season of the year , so low In fact that very little manIn Is left for the prowcr. In some Instances producers are complaining that this Is the lowest market In the west and consequently refuse to ship here. Local elealers are very much Interested In reports from California to the effect thnt nhlppcrs of fruit In that stile nre at a joss to know what to do on account of the , damage to the fruit crop from frosts and drouths. The Indications , It Is said , are good for a largo crop of grapes , but even these are threatened by the dry weather. . As yet very little can bo told as to the final outcome of the fruit crop. Within the last year or two a very large business In fruits has been done with the south , so that even If the supply of California fruit should fall short of requirements It docs not necessarily follow that there will bu a shortage In Omaha. Colorado , especially , has come to supply this market very largely with peaches. RENTS AND URAL , ESTATE. Those who are In a position to know say that the present prospect Is that rents hive not yet reached the top. though there Is not likely to bo another genetil rise. The con tinually Increasing demand of the -week for Inside property has brought a slight rise in particular localities. Several lenses for un extended perod were renewed last week at a slight Increase. Store buildings , par- ttcul irly south of the viaduct , which rent for six months nt a time , have all Increased In rent about 10 per cent. Small store buildings In the north part of the city , renting from month to month , are on a par with house rents , though the demand Is not so strong. Store room Is still plentiful In the city nnd rents on this kind of prop erty can hardly bo expected to stay up. Iteal estate transfers do not show much change cither In number or price , averaging fttnut $20,0i)0 ) pe r day. No change for the better In the actual salable value of prop , erty In general can bo expected so long as the isreat number of forced sales crowd the market , though a tendency toward a Btroiiger market Is seen In some particular choice sales now being negotiated. The g.iln was almost en tirely In hogs , there being very few sheep hero as compared with n week ago and on.y about the same number of cattle. CATTLE There vvcro llfty-nlnc bads of c.ittlu here , while Chicago and Kunsai. City repotted not enough to establish quotations. With such small offcrlncs ut all selling points and with no especial re'.isoii for anticipating an ) thing mole than an oral , .uy run tor Monday , It would seem as If theie ought to have been n fair demand for fat cattle of ull kinds. Iho demand , however , did not materialize. The weather was waim nnd eneivatlng and the market seemed to have a bad nttuek of spring fever. The bujeis did not appeal to take enough Interest In the c.ittlu to Keep awake und eveiy time they made u bid It was so low aa to put the seller to s'eep In other words the market was not only weak and lower , but It was entirely devoid of life und activity. It vvas a drag from start to llnlsh and It was late before any thing of uny Importance vvas done. While' the week dated with the market In anything but a sitlsfactory condition so far us belling Interests were concerned , It was not so bad us It might have been taking the week us a whole. In fact there was some little Improvement In values durlns the early part of the week , especially on tidy , light and medium weight cattle. The gain , howevct , vvas ull lost during the last two dajs so that values at the end were not much different from what they were at the close of the previous week. The best selleis all the week wete handy beef steers nnd good , light heifers , while heavy branded cattle were slow on every day of the week. The volume of business In stock cattle was very limited us the country Is apparently mjre Interested In preparing the ground for the season's crops than In looking for stockers or feeder ? . The only explanation for the market be ing in such a condition at the close of the week Is the uncertainty regarding the Im mediate future of the dressed beef trade. No one can form any definite Idea of what to expect during the coming week. All they know Is that the export trade , us well as the domestic , has not been very large the lust week , and as u matter of self-protec tion the pncUers do not seem Inclined to place themselves In a position to be caught with coolers full of beef for which there might be no outlet. The very fact that ilfy do not uppenr to want the cattle shows that at the present tlmo thcie Is a very In different demand for meats and no as surance that It will bo any better next week. .Representative sales : dlUL'itb No. Av.
