Some Journalistic changes have been an
nounced to take effect In the acar future ,
affecting the Nonpareil. City Editor Froom
Is booked to retire from his position within
a few dajs and bo succeeded by some per
son not yet name ] . The managers ot the
paper are also contemplating changing the
dally edition from a morning to an evening
Issue.
( Heretofore it has only been .necessary to
call attention briefly for the appearance ot
the "Devil's Auction" to fill the Dohany
theater to 1U greatest seating capacity , and
this will doubtless be the result tonight ,
when the company appears here. The play
4s always popular with Council Bluffs
theatrical people and as It Is bigger and
tetter than ever It will lose ncno ot Its
popularity after tonight's performance.
A new rupture has occurred between the
Kraft and Joncschclt families , which has
oaco more brought them Into court. For
the last two years they have been con
stantly before the public prosecuting and
defending all sorta of suits , from simple as
sault and battery to assault with Intent to
commit murder. Julius Kraft yesterday
began a suit In the superior court to 're
plevin from August Jonescheit twelve head
ot stock , valued at { 300 , which be alleges
his neighbor has. taken up and Is holding
on the grounds ot trespass.

The Board of Education , when It meeta In
regular mcatbly aesslon on Monday evening ,
I will elect a new principal ot the High
school to fill the vacancy caused by the

the board h a practically decided upon the

J. A. Patton , 'cashier of the First National
bank , and Mm. Patton , returned Friday aft
ernoon from an extended vlilt In the south ,
and when they retired to rnt In their home
at 105 South Seyenth street they were weary
enough to sleep soundly. Neither of them
heard the burglar who Invaded the place by
forcing open a front window. Nor did he
disturb their slumbers when be vlt > lted every
room In the house and made a painstaking
search for any valuables that might be found.
He did not meet with any succces until he
Invaded their sleeping room. Here he se
cured a roll of bills from Mr. Patton's veil
pocket and his flno gold watch that cost $150
and was greatly prized on account of asso
ciations. Mrs. Patton had a considerable
sum of money In large bHUj which she left
lying on the dresser and which she fortu
nately protected by placing the washbowl
and pitcher over It. On the dresser lay her
fine gold watch , but this was also overlooked
by the burglar. After Mr. Patton had re
ported his loss to the police circumstances
conspired to convince Mr. and Mrs. Patton
that they had been robbed a second time.
After the burglary was discovered yesterday
morning Mrs. Patton picked up her watch
and as she supposed laid It down again In a
leas conspicuous place. When she went to
get it at 9 o'clock It was missing. While she
was looking for It a neighbor woman In
formed her that she had seen a roughly
dressed man running from the house and
through the back yard. This confirmed the
suspicion that another thief had been In the
house during the few moments Mrs. Patton
waa out and the police were again notified
The watch was recovered , however , while
Mr. Patten UCB still at the police station.
It was found In another part of the house
and Mrs. Patton Is Inclined to believe that
It was dropped there by the thief while
making his hasty departure. The money
taken from Mr. Patton's pocket was all In
? 1 bills and nhlle It made a large roll the
amount was only $9.
The other raid on private residences re
sulted In lee gain for the burglar , but more
sorrow for one of the victims. This occurrei
at the residence of William Bohnlng , who
conducts a boarding house on the corner o :
Sixth avenue and South Eighth street. Free
Bockcmper. a bartender for Fred May , ant
who rooms there , was aroused a
dayllzht by feeling his trousers
slipping gently from beneath his
pillow , where he had placed them upon
retiring. It was about the hour he usually
awakes and he opened his eyes to eee a
roughly dressed man bending over. His eyes
were only opened for an Instant. The next
second 4hey were filled with a handful oi
red pepper , completely blinding him and
causing the most Intense pain. Boekempcr
epran : out of bed and screamed with the
pain. His cries aroused the household anc
f lightened the burglar , who sped downstairs
and out of the front window , which he had
raised when entering. All of the rooms oc
cupied by the other roomers and boarders
had been visited and all robbed. William
Bockemper lost all of the money he had In
hta pockets $1.80 , and a watch. Fred Mar
tin and Chris Bohnlng loot all of the valua
bles they carried In their clotheo , Including
watchea and jewelry.
Fred Boekemper gives a fairly good de
scription of , the 'burglar. The fellow had
forced open one or the tarlor wlndo-v * which
fronts the street and after getting Inside re
moved his shoes. In the chair where he sat
while doing this waa deposited a quantity
cf brick dust which had evidently rubbed
off his clothes. On the carpet was more of
the same kind of material , < whlch had evi
dently come from his shoes or hl trousers ,
where they had been rc led up at the bottom.
With the certainty of a large number of
similar crimes becoming more and more ap
parent Chief of Police Blxby suggests that
all owners of watches and fine jewelry take
the pains to write down accurate- descriptions

watches and cases and Initials and marks
or other Jewelry and silverware. In case
of theft this will aroint In Its recovery.

aspirations of a portion of the young men
who desire to foe soldiers ted who are now
members of the Iowa National guard. Here
tofore one of th chief qualifications for
enlistment was moral character , tractlblllty
and good fellowship. About the chief thlni
sought In physical requirements was a uni
formity of height of the members of each
company , sod no professional physical ex
amination was required. But with the pros
pects of sending a large portion , It not all
of tbe guard down to Cuba , the phystca
condition or the young soldiers Is being
looked Into. An order has been Issued re
quiring all of the membero and all oe *
men enlisting to present themselves to some
surgeon for .examination. Thesurgeon's
certificate must be endorsed on the back
of the enlistment papers. Tbe order so far
falls to designate tbe surgeco who Is to
examine the recruits , and the membero of
the local mllltb company have become so
anxious to gtt Into actual business that they

The social event of the week was the Roya
Arcanum half on Wednesday night , given In
honor of the officers and delegated to the
grand council of the order which held Ito
evcnth annual meeting here during the
week. It wa one of the most brilliant M-
semblages of the year. The handsome hal
was beautifully decorated. Tbe local green
houses' were called upon to furnlsb their
rarest treasures. These were artistically
placed In perfect harmony with the emblems
and Insignia of the order. The delicate Ar
canum colors were also tastefully displayed
The program called for the most fashionable
dancca and excellent muelc was piovlded.
The High School cadets gave one of thel
brilliant parties on Friday evening In
Hando's hall. The attendance was large
Among the guests were a number of the
Omaha Guards and the Dodge Light Guard
In full drees uniforms. A program of twen
tytwo numbers , was presented. The grand
march waa led ay Captain Pardy and Miss
Cunningham.
On Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Arthu
T. Hoffmayr entertained a number of thcl
friends at dinner at their handsome cottage
homo on Benton street. A very pleasan
social evening was enjoyed by all.
Among the special entertainments tha
were provided by the citizens of Councl
Bluffs for the delegates to the Royal Ar
canum state council were a number of de
llghtful social parties. Among them waa
the entertainment of Walter Irish of Dee
Molnes by Mr. and Mrs. B. 0. Brulngton
who gave a dinner In hla honor on Tucsda ;
evening.
