It dot * not appear that j > eople practice any greater t-conomy or teat they abstain Jrstn buying on ac count of the question at issue , but rather neglect their buslnes * and rpend too much time In discussing the situation. Inrtead of dropping Into tne store and buying the merchandise walcb hi * family may have use for the fanner stand * on the street corner and listens to the new * and become * so much Interested that ae finally Roes LU"J Joome without buying naif the good * that he came to town after. All over tbe coun try and in the cities the same thln.c 1 * true ; IKOple neglect to do this and that and forget to buy what they otherwise would , because their attention i * so aracfn taken up with tbe sensational new * of ube day. In addition to that business IP also influ enced to a great extent by tbe men w bo are extremely conservative and who alwaj * re tire from the market , and almost from busi ness , : very Ume there is a cloud on the horizon. Oma'na , fortunately , ha * very few business men of ubat class and for that reason the effect * of the war scare , which are so plainly visible In many localities , are cot much felt in this city. The whole inclination onToe part of the treat majority of the business men of this city 1 * to go ahead with "business Just a * If nothing out of the ordinary wa * occur ring or atiTut to occur. In some -cities traveling men say that business 1 * almost paralyxt-d by tbe fear of the leadlnc mer- c'nants , who are refusing to make any plans for the future in tee way of ex panding stock * . In retail clrclt * trade Is very active and it has been remarked IT old residents that they could .hardly remember a time when Omaha presented a more animated apj ear- ance than It has during the lat-t week. Tne weather on most days was very pleasant and shopper * wire out In full force with tbe result that in practically all depart ments a large volume of butlnen * wa * die- J posed of Bank clearings show a large Increase over a year aga. the gain Jor the week amounting to 27 per cent at this point , as ugalnst 12 j > er cent for the whole country. This would seem to bear out tbe statement made above to the -effect that business at thin point ias not lieen so materially Influenced liy war talk a * ha * U-en tbe case at maay otaer Cities. "WHAT JOBBERS ARE DOING , tiumber , according to the report * of lead ing firms. Is selling veil , but UK a matter of court. ? tbe volume of trade can hardly be expected to come up to last month when the retailers of the country were stocking up. After March there is usually a falling off In fne volume of sales in this locality until about September , when the farmers nre through wlt'n the rush of work and are ready to undertake the making of Im provements For this lUne of year , however. It must be admitted that trade Is excep tionally good. Price * in wholesale groceries are stll ! showing an upward tendency. During last week the price of coffee advanced * , to I cent per pound , -varying with the grade. Sugar remains steady , although refineries report a heavy demand and are oversold three to five days. Canned poods , tomatoes and i > eaches are higher than last week , the Increase in price amounting tt * from to lit cents per dozen. This advance is caused by killing frosts that have occurred in New Jersey , Dela ware and Maryland , The peach crop is especially affected and consequently peaches have advanced more than otber fruits. Tne market on oatmeal and beans is also quoted as being higher than a week ago. California dried fruit * , and especially apri- cets and fantr peaches , are considerably hLrlMSLfandMtnrV * : of desirable grades are well cleaned ip on tbe coast. Jobber * report the volume of business transacted last week a * being if anything larger than for lie week preceding and taink jirospect * are bright for a continuance of presentconditions. List week showed considerable easing up In tbe demand for wholesale hardware. This , .however. Is due almost entirely to the fact that farmer * are busy. Dealer * that come to the city say that if tbe job ber * could see the number of farmer * at work in the field * they -would not wonder at tbe falling off of business. To ere 1 * still a sKcht scarcity in some line * of spring roods , but the supply 1 * con- tantlr beeomlnjr more liberal and dealers mm to realize this stringency and are not placing heavier order * than they require for immediate use. In a short time the supply will doubtless be adequate to meet an de mand * At tne present time the stock of garden tool * and poultry netting is espe cially tftnaU. Ko change of any Importance 1 * reported in tbe schedule of prices DBT GOODS MARKET UNCHANGED. There was little variation last week in the wholesale dry good * market , Local jobber * are purchasing stock * and are con tinuing their business the same a-if there had 'been no talk of foreign complications. Tale is not tbe case however in all cities. Borne of the Jobbers of St. Paul and Kaneas City are said by travelingmen to have re fused absolutely to purchase additional stock * until more 1 * known concerning the rUatlon * of this country with Spain. A representative of a New Turk house who 1 * in tbe city at tbe present time says that toe dry roods business all over the east 1 * more or leu unsettled. The fact , however , that In the same city some merchant * will purchase new stocks while others prefer to wait shows that the personality of t'ne deal er * has a great Seal to do with tbe policy pursued. The local demand for dry goods continues 19 be exceptionally road and price * remain unchanged. The boot * fl * hD * Jobber * are now receiv ing orders for fall good * . Their travellng- coen are on tne road and , generally speak ing , are meeting with very good success. A good many of the country merchant * , however , are holding back their orders , a * they expect to come to the exposition and prefer to make their purchase * at that time. According to t'ne report * of wholesale i fruit dealers the warm weather of the last few day * created quite an appetite for oranges and consequently apple * are not in cuch active demand. The local supply of apples is rather short and the market ha * an upward tendency. Strawberrle * for thl * season of the year are arriving quite freely and tne quality 1 * constantly improving. Thus far Text * has nupplled the bulk of the shipment * , but Ar kansas berries are expected to put In an appearance not later than May 3- From a. commission man's point of view thl * ha * licen an unusually poor season for. game. The daily real estate totals continue about tcady for the week , the "nlghestpoint reached having been something over aKifl. The total transfer of property uy warranty , quit claim and sheriffs detd * averaged about K&.000 the first half of the week and about eo.W the latter "naif. The rise of inn first of the week wa * due mostly to the large sale t * the Omaha Brewing associa tion. tion.Property Property transfer * and building operation * were especially active in the northern part of town. The lack of nouses for rent ha * not only driven many people to pnrcnase , but at the same time .has caused an in crease in ther building of small houses. Foreigner * ac- 'epted freely of TCfterday * * cable offers. Corn made the -unusual advance of % ic. while oats closed HQT c higher , both mar- tets being affected principally by wheat , 'revisions Ehow little change. Traders in wheat were treated to a gen uine surprise at the oi > eninc. In spite of all the selling- done "aere yesterday of millions f bushels by the important long Interests , na notwithstanding the drop of 3c a bu. n July , all foreign market * came higher. Jvtrpool in particular was strong , showing advam-iB ranging from Jd to \ & . A fca- ure of the advance at Liverpool was the act that toe July price there was ic higher than the prevailing price In this market , or considerably abave the average shipping rates. New Tork reported that accept ances of wheat in all positions made by cable from there yesterday would be the icavlest of the season , practically every thing offered being taken. It was evident rom tali that the belief In war over shadowed everything else in the minds of the foreigners. The opening trades in July were at from K-7 c to Bc , against M * * f MT c at the close j-esterday. For a moment or two the market hesitated. Then it com menced to advance and for forty-five min utes the buying dtmand wa * simply enor- . mous. All clones of trader * came into the market for Vneat. It was not A onesmaa market : the demand was general and broad. The ordinary news of the day was as com- Betely Ignored as it was yesterday. Troi- -rs paid but little attention to anything but the foreign demand for American wheat , but this , was sufficient. Not until the price had advanced to K75vc was there any marked selling pressure. This price , nowever , was well above calls and selling against these privileges , coupled with lib- tral realizing of a general kind , put a stop to the advance ana caused the market to recede slowly to Wftne. Apparently by this time the demand for wheat had t > een pretty wtll satisfied , for although the marktt re acted to ST ic , it was done slowly , the lat ter point not being reached until about 11:20. During the last half hour of the short Saturday session the market was camparatit ely quiet , hut firm , with prices keeping within a i c margin. Northwest receipts were light , Minneapolis and Dulufa reporting JDS cars , against 171 last week and 124 a year ago. Chicago receipts were 77 cars. The audition to contract stocks today amounted to 101,030 bu. Clearances from Atlantic ports -were 71MKW bu. The world's shipments Monday are expected to show absut 7.KK > .0 bu. Liter sales of July yesterday , which were placed at that time at Fi , < K 0WK > bu. , were estimated today by many as hiph as .000,000 ba. . and as to is was believed to have practically put him out of the July deal it undoubtedly had A good deal to do with the hroadenlnr out of trade. This belief was strengthened by the fact Caat today his dealings were compara tively insignificant. The closing price for July was KCc , Corn was strong from the start. There was quite heavy buying all day , many prominent local players being caught short by the unexpected jump In wheat , a sharp advance in cables and by heavy accept ances over night. Tne price at one time showed a cent advance. May ranped from to i5ic and closed % @tic higher at SOUe There was an active general trade in oats. Prices w re maintained for some tltr but broke rapidly -under heavy selling. The market closed rather easy. May ranged from iCic to 25v c and closed ' /itg c higher at ST5iiC. ' Prj-viElons were very dull , most of the trading done being in lard. War talk an ; t'ne strength of the grain markets caused a small early advance , which -was lost later under celling by local packers. The close WAS steady. In fact It w us a pretty fair run for the last of the wt-ek , but the number was made up pretty largely of hogs and sheep , there being only about the usual supply of cattle. The receipts of cattle this week trrre quite large for this market as wlU be noted from the abave taole , t'nere belnp quite a decided ( rain over previous week. The re ceipts of hops -were also larger liian the art-rate for the last month , and the name was true of sheep. CATTLE There were about fifty loads of cattle repined In the yards today. Welch was vtry lair for the lust day of the weik and more than Cnlcajro and Kansas City tioti tocttier. The most of the cattle re tieef Eteers , pome fifteen loads of Montana hay fed cattle being Included among the receipts. The market AS a whole "was slow and draccy and there was a very marked ab sence of file and enerpjto the trade. Tnere was some , inquiry for fat beef cat tle , but it "was of an Indifferent character , the buyers acting as If they did not muta care -whether they tot any cattle or not. The result was a slow and easier market. Bntchtrs' stock sold but eveaOWE and heifers were slow and -Beak and It took * good deal of hard work and considerable lime , considering tne few here , to effect a clearance. Practically nothing was doing in the line of stockers and feeders the market as ; usual on a Saturday being very quiet. The cattle market this week has been far from satisfactory to the selling inter ests , as values have eifierienced a heavy break. The licht demand for meat prod- nets , tioupled wifn a liberal run of cttle , has caused a reneral decline at ajl market points , and while the decline &as been heavier on pome kinds than on'ethers no kind of cattle has esceped. Heavy and coarse beef steers have been the worst suf ferers , the market on fnat kind of cattle be- inr > 6-30c lower than A week ara , And in extreme cases many sellers would say 40c lower. Tidy little cattle have been tjhe best sellers and In consequence are only 10@3tc lower. Choice corn fed heifer * ihave felt the decline About as little as * ny kind of stock , but the medium grades of both cows and 'neifers are 10 15c lower than -week ago. Stockers and feeders are also low. the heav iest decline being on ibeavy feeder * , which have been extremely slow seller * all the week. The country * fems to have jrown Afraid , of stock cattle at current prices with fat cattle declining so eharpiy. Repre sentative BAle * : No. Av. Pr. No. Av. IT.
