TTTE OMATTA DAT1VY TEE. SATURDAY. AT nTT , 1G. 1898. 11 COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL later Unloads an Enormous Quantity of Jnly Wheat. THIS CAUSES A BREAK IN THAT MMiKET Sir Ws > rat ToarhfB kv P l t Slnrc 1M12 , lia-l COT T Hanscr of * rv - Cetila fjtir- IBC the CHICAGO. April (15. ( Tbe unloading of otnrthlnp. like 6.000,000 bu. of July wheat tcx3 r by Joseph Lclter rtsulted tn a breaV of 2 cent * In that option. May also de clined nhnrj > lr. closing r'jc lower than it < lld yesterday. The wlldnens and ctlvlty of tbe market 4s shown by tbe tact that there wa Tc difference between tbe high and low point * of May and Jc in July. The high point for May 1.15 Is the hlehent since 3K9Z. Corn and oat * declined about &c each in Bymj > aUiy. Provision * were cteady tuid ahpwpd slight clcmlnz advances. Trade In m-hcat utartcd out with the usual Jump In May and new high prices were innde for that deliver } ' . May closed ytslcr- day nt J1.114. but opened today all the way from JLlZ to tl.1 * and In two minutes * time It hud been up to I1.15Not since 1S32 has w'nent reached such a high level. A sharp lirrak to $1JO followt-d. followed by a quick recovery to S1.11H. After that all Interest until near the cloie T U centered in the avalanche of long July wheat which was thrown on the market by the big longi. Juiy opened at 87SSTsC. compared -with yeBterday'g closing price of BT c Hundreds had It for hale at those figures and the de cline which started did not halt until SC c n as recorded. There the market rested , but for only a few moments. Liquidation was redoubled and it was estimated that at leant u,000. < XXTU.was dumped on the market In the hour and a half which folio-wed the opening , ohltfly by one concern , John 4Tudaiiy waa credited with disposing of a large proportion of this. Others credited it to Armour , Ixlter and others. The order of liquidation was on Letter's account and the heavy lines he disposed of coupled with his enormous cash sales the last -week , must liave materially reduced his line of holdings. The LUorponl market was VZJHd lower be fore this market opened , but apart from that no rial reason for the weakness could lie gattured. Other holders -were evidently determined to realize their profits on the recent large Increase and their action brought nearly all the email "tailors" In with their lines of lojig wheat. After"the July price had got down to Hfi c the market also went down to a certain extent and up to 3S.30 the decline was \ery gradual ; but irt Ihe last half hour's trading liquidation was resumed again and this time May also suffered , though more from lack of .support than from extensive offerings. It was evi dent then that the early bulge in May was part of a cleverly prearranged plan to help Lelter liquidate his July holdings and it un doubtedly did act as a steadying Influence during the first tremendous flood of wheat. The ordinary news of the day was entirely mslected. Northwest receipts were small 22 * oars , against S3 last week. The addi tion to the tintract stocks today amounted to about 81003 bu. Crop reports were rather conflicting In nature , V ut generally favora ble Argentine bhlpments were 1.MIO 000 bu. , compared with 1,072.030 bu. the week pre vious. Seaboard clearances -were 423,000 bu. The market became weak toward the close and the lowest prices of the day f r July were quoted as the session came to an end. July closed nt H 4 rMT e : May closed at Jl.OM , after selling at J1.08. Corn was easier , partly on account of fine weather , hut principally in sympathy -with wheat. The-cash demand nhowed a big falling off , Another bearish factor. Profes sionals led the nelling , but offerings were not heavy Shippers bought sparlnply. May ranged from iO'w to 29 © 29tsc and closed % c low er at St & Slmc. OatH was fairly active , -weak and lower. There was a good deal of selling by leading longs The -weakness of wheat and corn was the-maln factor. "Weather was also an influence. .New York was a moderate bujer. May ranged from 2C c to 2 : > , c and -closed He to lc lowtr pt 2r. , iB'2 a1c. Provisions , considering the weakness of the grain markets , -were quite steady. Bus iness -was very dull , however. Business vnt scattered , tout miHleient to care for all offerings. Fluctuations were narrow. The close was steady ; May pork 2 > c lower at * d.80. Tne rpce.pts of. cattle were slightly'larger than aweek ego , and the same wa& true of nogs , but the number of sheep on sale was much larger than on last Friday , The demand for block of all kinds was of liberal proportions , but prices \v ere not as strong , In a number of cases , as they were u week ago , and to t'nat extent the market was not a.s pleasing to sellers as it might hate been , CATTLE Fortunately for the sellers , there were a few Itss than 10) cars of cattle In the yards today , counting all kinds , but but the market seemed to have a bad case r * t" . * Tips In Fplte or llB'nt receipts. There -was a . . - ' light run at Chicago and no great number - atHzT s City , no that It was not a question of rtcelrAs In fact. It wai not icry easy to say just what was the matter , but the fact remalnid that it was a verj" dull and unsatisfactory market with values on the down grade. Quite a good many beef cattle were on Bale , some of fnem good stuff though tae proporrion of heavy cattle was most too large to please bujers. Values w re pretty generally lOc lowtr. thouth occasionally a seller who happened to haie something handy wilch was pleasing In the ejes of fne buyers thought they did not bid quite that much off. Under the circumstances sell ers w ere not prepared to make such a radical concession and the result was that the market dragsed all the morning and It was late before anything like a clearance was effected. , Even cows and heifers , -which are usually such free sellers , were slow and draggy with prices all of 40c lower on the common and medium rafle6. A few choice < : orn fed "heifers and jearllngs may have sold at about steady prices as there is a demand for that kind , -while the supply is light on most days. Buyers were explaining their action by saying that steers nave Declined sharply In the past few days while cow stuff has remained almost stationary and that it was time there-was a drop in the latter to even up matters. Others were say ing that they taad been paying too much at this point for cows and heifers as com pared with Chicago and that they did aot want the cattle unless they could buy them wortu the money. "Whatever reasons the bu } er , may have had there was no mistak ing their actions and the market waa very low at the decline noted above. Some choice little stock cattle sold this morning as .high ae at any time , but it was noted that t'ne regular bujerswere not in it to speak of. outside parties being the buyers. In fact , regular yard operators seemed to "feel i ery K eak and there would seem to i > e every reason for expecting that stock cattle will have to well lower in sympathy -with the break in fat cattle unless the- country has cone competely crazy. Heavy feeders , that is cattle weigh ing IKK ) pounds or over , are unmlstakeably lower and the country has become afraid of them no tnet cattle-of that kind during the past two or three days have been hard to mote.
