CHICAGO. April 12. Wheat today closed
at an advance of WiSlftc for July. Kor
tne second duy In succession California
crop damage reports of a. sensational char
acter had nn Important Influence. The Cal
ifornia reports nnd an enormous continental
demand made a strong > market. Cjrn nnd
oatn were helped by the strength of wheat
nnd closed at n sllgYit advance. Provisions
were dull and toft off nt n trifling decline.
The government crop report , showing a
condition of SO , compared with 81,6 list
j car , was responsible In the main for the
t'U-sy feeling which marked fne opening in
iv heat. The report did not estimate tha
area planted , but It IB generally believed to
be larger thun tail year , anil the com
paratively 'nigh condition figures caused
quite a light scattered liquidation at first.
Another bearish factor was the perfect
weather prevailing In the winter wheat
country. Opening trades In July ranged
from S1ljc to 83K.c , cotnpir d wltn yester-
dfiy's closing prlcu of ST/fcc. / For a brief time
the market held around those figures. Then
tb northwest markets , light receipts In
t'nut section nnd liberal commission house *
bujlng , supposed to be for St. kouls short * ,
resulted In hnrdtnlng of prices and a slow
advance , which was continued for nearly
two hours. Minneapolis and Duluth re
ceipts continue to full off. 1S1 cars today ,
against CV ) last week nnd 604 a year nso.
Chicago receipts Mere 119 car. * . Tne addi
tion to contiiict stocka today amounted to
1W.OOO bu. Uefore 11-.TO the market had ad
vanced to 8p. ( This was close to "call"
tulcii and Hclllnc auulnst these privileges ,
coupled with considerable liquidation of a
genet u | nature on the swell , sent July hick
to S4',4c. In this reaction the Inllucnco of ;
lirndstrect's visible iei > ort , showing nn In-
cieas-c of l.l'G.COO liu. , was felt. As there
Mas a decrease last year the blir Inciease
caused a good deal of short Belling. Hut
before noon the market had begun to re
cover. The advance was slow until reports
from California , even moro sens itlon.U than
those recelve.il yesterday , came In. Largo
exporters of wYicat In San Francisco said
there would be no further exports from
there for fifteen months and a Chicago llrm
had sold for It In Sin Francisco December
wheat at a pi Ice 2J4c per Ini. o\er yester
day. Tnn weather In California was still
unfavorable , wll'n no prospects of relief.
Kansas al o complained of drouth. The
market after the noon hour rapidly grew
stronger. JJosldcs the support received from
the California , news the market waa aided
by the enormous continental demand for
cargoes , J.-lve-rpool nnd 1'ails advices both
Htntlng fnnt 7,200,000 bu. had been sold last
week. The last hour of trading was quite
active , buying being general and heavy ,
and prices advanced sharply. The strength
wi3 maintained to the close , July llnnlly
adyancln ; to 83V ; and closing Ilnn at
.
Corn was weak nvst of the day. Favor-
nlilo weather and some Inctease In western
offeilngs caused an Increase In t'rto Slay
liquidation , and very little demand was
manlfeiited until late In the session. The
strength of wheat finally overshadowed
everything else and drove shorts to cover ,
corn becoming steady near the clofe. with
till t'ne decline reeovot oil. .May ranged from
2U1ic to 29ic and closed a hhade higher at
29Mc.
Oita was steady for May , but ensy on the
moro distant futures , fine weather being
responsible for this. Trade was slow and
of a piofesslonal character. Every thing
closed strong with w'neat , thcie being good
general bujlng late In the session. May
ranged from 2jic to 23l4c and closed Uc
higher at 2yjic.
1'rovlslons were dull. Packers did mo'Jt
of ttlt * business and dealt only In small lots.
The feeling was steady , with fluctuations
narrow Inall products. At the close .May

At usual on a Tuesday tne receipts of
stocks of all kinds were very ljiis * . hut
the total number of car ? ran considerably
nheml of the iccords made ono anti two
wucks ape , lar.se as they were. A v.ety
larpo run , however , had been anticipated
HO that there was nothing In the l.itgu nr-
tlvals to ocrnhlon nurprlse. Considering
the large offerings of nil kinds of stock the
general market e\ci-pt on beef steers w.is
In fair condition , and on BOIUP lines It was
of a vciv satisfactory character ,
CATTUC The yards were full of cattle
this morning , considerably over 200 cars
being leportt'd In. To add tj the imfuvor-
ablencss of the situation there was a steady
fall of rain all the morning , which made
cattle look mean , and buyers feel the H.imo
way. Some of the trains did not arrive
until rntheT late , and the buyers held back
on that account and by reason of the disa
greeable weather so that the morning v.vas
well advanced before they really got down
to business.
With plenty of cornfed steers In sight to
supply all probable requirements of the
dressed beef trade buyeis could afford to
be- bearish and take their time to make !
telectlons. An general thing their bids
even on handy cattle , sucn as have been
selling at the best of late were Ci/lOc lower ,
and when It came to the heavy cattle or
such as were not specially desirable , the
bids were never less than lOc lower , and
weic just as apt to be 15c lowe-r. Under
such circumstances sellers were not Inclined
to part with their holdings very freely , nnd
ns mav bo Imagined , the market was a drag
from start to finish. Up to 10 o'clock al
most nothing had been done In the way of
clearing the yards of beef cattle.
The situation as regards butcher stock
was moro favorable to the selling Interests.
The supply was light , while thu demand
was of about the usual pioportlons , so that
values did not show much change from
yesterdays standard.
Stock cattle were al ° o In moderate sup
ply , and as there have been none here to
speak of for several days the buyers were
Blad to get them nt fully steady prices.
