IT RELIEVES THE SELLING PRESSURE Ttccorersi from * v Dnd Break * fCoric mnd Ont Itcmnla Wn- chanKril , bnr I'rovlnloBB Cloae Irregnlar. CHICAao , April . Wheat today , after breaking 2 cents a bu. on the closing out of a number of Vicnvy Ions lines , recovered to within % o ot Monday's closing price err the news of the postponement ot the prcil- defit's message to congress. The news ot the postponement greatly relieved the sell ing pressure. Corn ana oats were steady , with scarcely any change for the day. I'ro- ivlslons wcro nrm early , but closed Irregu lar , pork at a email advance and lard and ribs ( W c lower. The Yilghcst prices reached on yesterday's curb were quoted for July wheat nt the opening today , July starting all the way from Me to K < i\c \ , against Monday's closing price of So'/iflSrHc. For the first fifteen or twenty minutes' trading It wns dlfllcult to 1111 the short covering orders which poured In from local nnd outside sources. Most of this was In small lots , but St. Louis was a heavy buyer In covering Important short line ; ) , The strength nt the start was ap parently mostly due to the foreign news , Liverpool being about % d higher , while Odessa reported Kusslan wheat advancing on me war prospects. Continental markets also showed strcngt'n nnd London reported the continent as a buyer of fourteen of the nevcnteen cargoes off coast. The northwest movement was rather light , Minneapolis and Dulnth reporting receipts of 253 cars , compared with 333 last week and 263 a year tigo. Chicago receipts were 1CI cars for two days. Additions to contract stocks were moro moderate M cars from regular sources and 29 cars from mixing 'nouses , a total of about 85,000 bu. The advance which marked the opening1 soon brought largo quantities of long wheat onto the market , several Important lines being offered by prominent professionals , nnd after the more pressing wants of the shorts 'nad been'sat isfied the market began to decline , slowly lUt surely. The recessional movement con tinued for nearly two hours , during which time July was hammered down to 81 % with out nny reaction of note. The firmness of closing Liverpool nnd continental cables and 'neavy purchases by commission houses plopped the decline at that point nnd cauHcd a rally before noon Jo Kc , when " nnother spell of weakness , duo partially to f the comparatively low prices p.ild for cargoes - ' " goes at London , resulted In a drop to 81 % ( USIVic. The decline wns accompanied by a renewal of the Influential liquidation which marked the early weakness nnd t'ne market up to within 'naif nn hour of the close nhowed considerable weakness. News tnnt the piosldcnt's message would not be sent to congress before Monday relieved the pressure toward the close nnd a steadier , . feeling gradually manlfcslcd Itself , liquida tion dropping ; off to a great extent. Hotter support waa given and the market re covered to b3Vic. Tile close was steady at 8ljjS3e. The fiction of corn was governed chiefly l > y wheat. The market was quiet , active nnfi strong during the morning , but the de cline In wheat and free country offerings , with prospects of more favorable weather , Drought about a slow decline. Firm cables were an early Influence. The market be came very dulLlate In t'ne day. May ranged from 29c to 2SHc and closed at 2DV4c. Oats was fairly active , with prices In fluenced mostly by the action of'wheat and corn. Shorts were good buyers early. Of ferings became freer during the decline In wheat , mostly In the way of realizing , the close being steady ut nbout unchanged prices. Mny ranged from 2oic to 25o nnd closed nt 23V4R'20j4c. ' ; ProvlBl6nn were Irregular. Starting weak and lower on account of lower hog prices , the market quickly rallied on liberal pur chases by packers and others , but during the latter part of the session selling was quite heavy , the only Influence , apparently being the drop In .grain markets. Mora pressure was put on lard and ribs than on pork. The close was rather weak , Mny pork. 2'4c higher at $9.90 ; May lard , 7&c lower at $5.25.and May ribs , Cc lower at 13.20. . NEW YORK , April 6. There Is a strong con viction In Wall street that delay In the sending In of the picililent's message la favorable to the avoidance of war. This was clearly manifest In the rcjponso of the market to tlJo early rumor from Washington that the president's message would not go In today , and to the later author ized announcement that It would be withheld until Monday. The disposition of the message was the central point about which the whole market turned all day. The assertions of the newspapers tl.ts morning that It would without question go In today , and that It would declare for forcible Intervention , caused the decline nt the opening , opening prices In almost all cases being the lowest of the day. The resistance to the decline nnd the quick recovery were a. sur prise to outside observer ? , who were prepared for something like a war panic on the exchange. Tllu recovery was due to cabled reports of a rumor In London that the message would not comw In until next Thursday , This rumor wns quickly discredited by statements from Wash ington , and the market drifted to n loner plane again , but not to the lonest. The stagnation of the trading during this period of waiting was almost absolute , and the sudden outbreak of ac tivity when the later authentic reports came from Washington that the"messagewould be de layed until Monday wa" In strong contrast. It was evident that the conclusion-was leaped to that the withholding of the message was due tea a reception of further proposals from Spain or to mo\ements for mediation by European pow ers giving promise that the two .countries . mlcht emerge peacefully frcm their entanglement. The violent advance was checked nnd reaction set In when It as stated that the delay was due to advice * from Consul Lee that he would not be able to secure the departure In safety of Ameri cans from Cuba before next Monday. Prices stiffened ngaln , however , before the close on the strength of the general sentiment that delay favored pence. The money market maintained a waiting attitude. Tlmp money was Hrm nt per cent for nil dates , tmt the xel'.inro market showed a hardening tendency. Gold continues to come from abroad.
