THK OMAHA DAILY . APRIL 1. 1898. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Uncertainties of War Oivo the Market n Holiday Character. THERE IS AN UNDERTONE OF FIRMNESS ( Wlicnt mull Oatn Clone Illnlirr , Ontn 11 vni n I n UiiclitiiiKfil , IIIK ! 1'rcivl- loim SlrtuiKi'r on 'Kuinorcil ( jovernnieiit CHICAGO , March 31. Uncertainty In re- tgnrd to the outcome of pending npgoUatlotiR between the United Statun and Spain gave nlniost u lio'lduy churactor to trading In . wheat utul coarse eralnn today. There WON a. Kcncral undertone of llrmness , wlioat cloHlnK Uc lilKliir for July. Corn advanced % c ami oats closed unchanged. I'rovlslons iwcro very < lrm , affected l > y talk of Urge orders for naval supplies , and closed J1401 20u hlRher. Wheat opened about % c lower for July , initial mules being made ut 81iJ814C. The inapnlllcunt prospects for the wheat crop In KannaH and unfavorable reportn front other wheat growing states were the chief causes for the opening weakness. Somu eectlons reported an Increase In area of 20 per cent , and It was stated that very little damage had resulted from recent frosts. It was also reported that about 20,000,000 bu. of old wheat wag Bllll on hand In Kan sas. The early drop In Wall street prices nlso acted as a disturbing Inlluonce. I'rlces noon recovered , however. Liverpool and Paris markets both sin wed steadiness , and BtoekH showed an early recovery , giving rise to the belief that Insiders were In pos- neHHlon of favorable Information concerning the outlook of n settlement of the Cuban question. Tim bulls also derived comfort Jrom the falling off In northwest receipts , [ Minneapolis and Dululh reporting 220 cars , uialnst 321 last week and 6S7 a year ago. Though this did not result In much Increase In the buying demand , It stopped the short Helling nnd liquidation In a degree , and prices slowly recovered to S2'10S2c. The usual selling by scalpers who are satlslled with fractional prolHs'tlien set In , and a decline to 81o ensued. Trading was ex tremely narrow , amounting at times almost to stagnation. The uncertainty In regurd to the ultimate settlement of the Cuban jueatlon acted as a drag on the market , traders preferring to wait until something definite was known before venturing toe far either way. In consequence IHicUiatlons . \vero conllncd to nn exceptionally narrow range , the market at no time getting above 82c , while opening llgures marked the low point of the day. Almost injUiliig was dom with ilay , and that delivery held steady t practically a nominal value , J1.03 } ! . II did ( drop at one time to $1.0. % on one 01 two offerings , but recovered as soon as tlu pressure was removed. July , after the re action to 81c , recovered again to MM ! ! 82'c , and held at that price to the c'ose On account of the dullness , routine news other than stated had scarcely any effect Chicago receipts were 53 cars , 15 of con1 tract grade , llcsldes this 72 cars and as , : liti. of contract wheat were received fron mixing houses , making the total addltlot to the contract stocks today about 12. > , SOi 1 > U. Atlantic cleatances amounted to 439,001 lti. July was bringing S2',4yS2Vio at thi close. May closed at $1.03U. Corn was steady , but very dull ; most o the time at n trillo above yesterday's prices Bhorts did about all the buying. There wa : more or less sympathy with wheat and tin ndvancu In Wall street. Trading was nt most entirely local. May ranged from 2'J { 20V&C to 2S c nnd closed ' , &c higher nt 2 ! > c. Oats were almost at a standstill all day theru being barely lie lluctuatlon In prices Trade was altogether or a scalping imtur nnd In small lots. The market showed ai undertone of llrmness with wheat and corn May ranged from 2j'&e ' to 21T c and closei unchanged nt 2oc. Provisions wcro firm at the opening , am became stronger later , prices being close ti the top at the end. It was reported tha liberal orders had been received from nava stores , mini this caused covering by HhorU resulting In a strons market. Hog marke was llrm. There were rather mysterious undercurrents all dny In the stock market , which nothing In the nubile news servei lo explain , nnd for which the gos. lp In AVal street found numerous nnd contradictory ex ilanatlons. The opening slump , In which lojses ranged fiom 1 to 2 points nnd upward , seemed , o be In sympathy with nn earlier decline li London. American nslllng In London was said to be for New York account of operators who were too eager to take their profit * In yesterday's risu to wait for the opening In New York , llul th ojwnlng prices here proved to be the lowest for thu time being , and there was nn eager de mand Immediately manifest for stocks all through the ll t. This "demand continued will : only thort periods cf cessation throughout tht morning Fesslon , and rallied prices almost 01 nulto to last nlf-iht's closing level. The natural Inference from this would bo that the eiirllei selling In London for New York account wns for manipulation punwses. The markel found n resiKm e In a rally on foreign exehange.- of the prices of Amerlmn securities and nlso ol Spanish securities , which were also tleprus e * ! rarly In the ilay on pessimistic reports fron Midi-Id. The latter portion of the day saw t persistent decllna In prices In New Yolk , will only occasional periods of steadiness , mojt etoeki falling below the opening prices and closing nl or near life lowest. TI j appropriation by th < New York legislature of n Jl,000,0 * ) emergencj fund for defense wns the nominal motive of thi latter decline. Although nearly the whole of thi day'H business was done at prices below la * night's level , and although the net changes an all on the side of leases extending between 1 am 3 polnla for most sUi.Mts , nnd over that In rpe clal cases , It was very obvious that a largo nm rather eager demand for Blocks was Fall-lie , during the day , and It was the prevailing Im presslon In the street tUit the opening declln. . was manipulated to give opportunity to satlsf ; thin demand. Aside from the bullish trade ere nlod among the room traders by this underton. . of strength , and the belief tint the demand fo stocka was due to some hidden motive , or undls closed Information regarding Spain's Intention * the general outlook was not considered promls Ine , The money market reflected thn uncertain ! ; in the outlook more accurately than did th stock market. Lenders are holding out for 6tl ( rates for tlmo money , and borrowem arcno disposed to piy the rates asked , as It Is cortali tlint any prospA-t of peace would Immediate ! result In an abundance of money. The genera neplect of the time money market and the resor of borrowers to call loans resulted In etlffenlni call rates today. The exchnngo market was dul and neglected , the further Importation of gol. . being largely dependent on the outcome of th controversy between the United States nnd Bpilii The boml market was less active than stock. nnd prices showed n tendency to sag through out the dny.
