IMPROVING COUNTRY ROADS Thoronghfuras in Rural Districts to Got Immediate Attention , COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MAKING PLANS Onlroni nuil Huff-lilt Looking Otcr < ho to Li-nrn. JiiMt U'lint in .Ni-cilod ti > I'ul Them In Ouiiilltlon , County Commissioners Ostrom and Hofeiat of the road commlttco have gone to tlio conn- try for the purpose of Investigating and re porting to the board the roads that will bo Improved during th'o coming ncason. They will return In tlmo for the Saturday meet ing , but at that tlmo they will not bo pre pared to submit tchlr reports. Next week they will mak'o another tour of the county nnd at the following meeting of the board they will bo ready to repsrt. Whllo a great deal of work was done on the roada last year. It la probnblo that much moro will l/o done this year. It Is the In tention of the commissioners to put the roads In the best possible condition and build hi a number of little gaps , connecting the country roads with the paved highways leading out from the city. At this tlmo th'ero are three paved road- wajfl , the work on which haa been done by the county out of the proceeds of the $150- 000 of road Improvements bonds voted come > can ago. The roada that have b'ecn so Improved are : The Military road , paved with sandstone nnd extending through Hen son and on toward Dennlngton ; the Center street road , 'extending from the end of Cen ter street , southwest toward the State fair grounds ; the Dodge street road , extending from a point where Uodgo street Intersecta the city limits to a point not far from Happy Hollow. Tliero still remains some $18,000 In the permanent road Improvement < fun < i , and this Is to be used In Improving and extending th'o Dodge and Center atreet roads. Bids for doing thte work will be received by the county commissioners on April 2 , and It la thought that the contracts will bo awarded at once , that the work of paving may begin at the earliest posalbl'e date. EXTENSIONS PLANNED. With the funds available the commission ers hope to extend the Dodge ntid Center street paving at least five miles , which will give two paved roadways Into the country for a distance of at least ten mlla ? , and possibly fifteen. The Dodge atreet road will extend directly wrst , while the Center street road will bear off to the southwest. With thtfco two roads extended for such a dis tance , the commissioners figure that the fa cilities for reach'ng the city by wagon will be of the best , even hi bad weather. It lo largely for the purpose of ascertain- Ing what roads should be Improved In order to tap these two thoroughfares that the com- mlasloners are now out on their tour of the county. Chairman Kleretead , In speaking of road matter ? , eald : "We expect to have a great many of the roads completed long before the close of the exposition. Wo are pushing this work that visitors hero miy have good roatls to drive over when they visit the rural dis trict" , as many of them will. Wp do not prrpcae to exhaust the road fund , but we do rro cse to expend n coed deal of money In puttlii2 our thoroughfares In ( list-class con dition. There is nothing that Impresses strangers more than eood roads , well kept , and to show people from abroad that wo are up-to-date we Intend to place the roads In better condition than ever before. "Usually It has been the custom to ( start road work about the latter part of May , but this year wo are going to begin It fully one month earlier. In fact , some of the work on new contracts will begin in April , and will be hurried along to completion. Two of the gradlrz contractors arc at work now. The man who has the contract for grading the west end of Center street has' a large force of men at work , while one contractor in West Omaha has commenced on his contract ° . and Is making the dirt fly at a lively rate. These are contracts that were awarded last year , but nothing to speak of was done on them until this sprlns. "Tho paving that was done last year and prlcr to that tlmo will be repaired wher of ever necessary , that the three Improved roada may bo In perfect condition , "While wo have nothing to do with th roads and streets In the city , \\o propose to show the city council that we nro nllvo to the Interests of the county , nnd If the ro.idi are not In good condition , It will not bo tht fault of the commissioners.
