The tntslnesn. Ituatlon. viewed ns .1 whole ,
very satisfactory last week , though II
can hnrdly be said that nny material change
took pluco In the- space of the acek. The
fnct 1 , business had been good for pome
time past , nnd no one wants to ceo mi )
change , the pit-sent dearth ot news being
preferable , to the members of the trade.
The country continue * prosperous , tind so

the general volume of business , though with
the fhnnge of the nsnions comes a natural

In the call for some other.

So long ns the condltloiiFi remain -o fuvor-

Tailing off In the volume of business , 'Ahlle
the coming of better prices for some one
of the leading firm prolticts , which is nl-
ways possible , would tend to better trade
conditions very materially.
CONDITIONS STEADILY IMPROVE.
In'Omaha the local business conditions
ehow steady Improvement , duo to a wide
variety of reasons which nre famlllir to nil.
The large reta'l stores were thronged nl
the wcfk. or until the sno-v Ftorm rendered
the streets rather unpleasant for shoppeis
to lie out.
Collections are , much Improved In the city ,
money in general circulation being appar
ently Increased , and In the countty they
uris holding up ns good ns it nny time.
In some departments of trade there l-t a
strong tendency toward higher prices owing
to tho.Jiicreaped demand for manufactured
goods , which has enabled manuf.ictiircr.s to
ask and obtain more money for their
products As an example , Jobbers who h.ivu
recently returned from the ca < t say that the
pro3pect nro nil In favor of advances on
shoes. Under the strefs of compcCt'on the
rnnnuf.ictuiorst have freriiiently had'd their
Jlrst quotations within the. past few week ? .

cis are Very cautious about taking further
order for shoes nt the former prices , thus
Indicating their belief In Ihe. T > OM lbl Ity of
higher prices for the near fittuie.

LIVE' ' STOCK VALUES.
The most encouraging featiuc to be fount
within the whole range of business experl
tnces during the past wesk , nnd the om
lltily to play the most Important roll li
the months to come , was the sudden nni
wliiirp advance In cattle values. The grca
numhurs of high priced cattle taken ou
Into the country nnd placed on feed las
fall and winter has made business men es
peclnlly sollcltou" as to the ftituro of cattl
prices. For a time It looked ns It tno farm
ers would just about lose the feed , ns th
beef market did not score the expected nd
vunce. The loss , or oven partial loss , of th
corn fed to cattle would be a most serlou
blow to all business Interests In the slat
and no one could contemplate such a possl
blllty without a feeling of anxiety.
At the same time a prent many of the
best Informed have been firm believers In
the theory of ultimate higher prices for fat
cattle based upon the admitted shrinkage In
the available supply. The fnct that the ad
vance did not come at ) soon us .expected
caused some to lose faith In Its to
appearance , but the past week has ed
to prove byond the possibility of a doubt
that the long desired time Is near at hand.
The supply of cattle at all the gre.xt mar
kets of the country has been small and irIt
begins to look as If It was to remain soP
for some time to como. The horns consump
tion of beef has greatly increased nt the
same time that the supply has shown n fall.
Ing off. It Is also a significant fact that
values have advanced In the United States :
at a time when the markets abroad were
weak. In other words the present advance
IB not due to nny temporal y spurt In the
foreign export demand. Should the English
markets show nny marked Improvement the
tendency would be toward a still firmer
market on this side of the water.
Exporters and shippers were good buyers
at South Omaha all the past week and the
competition between the local packers and
BMpjurs was very keen on many days , thus
gradually forcing prices upwaids.
While cattle have been advancing the hog
market ha been In the dumps and has
barely held its own. The market on lambs
has also shown n loss owing to tno ovcr-
jjupply of that kind of stoc c at all the leadIng
Ing market points In the country. However
the general business Interests of the coun
try nro mostly concerned with the ca'tlo
market.
NEBRASKA MANUFACTURERS.
The manufacturers of the state are taking
no little intircst In tae coming expobltlon
nnd It will not bo their fault If visitors are
not duly-Impressed with the Importance of
Nebraska as a manufacturing state. The
flour mills especially are preparing to spend
a good deal of money for the making of f
proper display. Twelve mills have united
-to their forces and will make a partnership
display for the common good. One of the
big Industries ! In Omaha Is the mutiufttc ure
of overalls and men's working shirts , which
will be represented by a complete factory
In operation. Then there will be the lln-
Eced oil and white lead works , the Kearney
Cotton mill , the South Omaha packing
liouses , the beet sugar factories and a good
many smaller but no less Important Indus
tries.

CHICAGO , Mnrch 12. The break In Wall
street inado another bad "ciuurter of nn
hour" In wheat today , causing July to break
about 2c. T.icre was another struggle In
May between the Lcltcr and Armour Inter
ests , but Leiter managed to maintain Uic
former prlc ? . Leiter applied to the directors
for a murglnul price on May wheat , which
tended to relieve the tension toward the
close. The day's decline In July wns IK1"-
Everything else on the lloor showed weak
ness , especially provisions , declines of I'.VU1
2Jc being recorded In that market. Corn
closed u shade lower and oats lost U < fJc'
Wheat started ns If n rally after the weak
ness of yesterday were to take place. Hold
ers \vere encouinged by the steadiness
shown by foreign markets , especially Liver
pool , In the face of yesterday's tumble In
prices here. It was also known that Leiter
hud placed additional shipping orders of
nearly 150,000 bu. Oflerlngs at llrst were
comparatively of small \olume , while quite
n good scattered demand was apparent. Bids
were made for July nt the opening nt SS'iff
8SHc. This was lie over yesterday's closing
prlco and the buying demand was enough
to udil another small fraction to the pries
in a very short time. The market held fnirly
steady for sometime at around that 'price ,
but llnally ne weakness In Wall street , gly.
Ing rise to apprehensions of liquidation In
everything1 else , bi ought longs Into the mar
ket to unloid. It alto r sulted In an almost
total cutting off of support and professional
shorts , taking advantage of that fact , ham
mered the price down rapidly. Kor about
fifteen minutes the market was excep
tionally weak , July selling down without a
stop to SG c. a break of 2c from tne high
est point. The decline brought a good
many flop loss orders nnd considerable sellIng -
Ing was also done through fear of another
attack on May by the big bears. In this
holders were agreeably disappointed. Plenty
of May was offered , but there was nothing
like the concerted attempt to break the
market which took place yesterday , and
Leltei's brokers had comparatively lltllc dif
ficulty In keeping the price ut $1.01. An i-
other Influential factor was the New lork
bank statement. The market , nfter getting
down to NVhie for July , gradually grew ;
qulster. The stendlnefs of May had a good
effect on the nerves of the July holders and
brought some of the early sellers back.
Shorts who had big profits on the break
also covered freely and the prlc ; gradually
crept back to SGT&c. Then for sometime al
most a holiday dullness prevailed , with
fluctuations frequent nnd narrow. Late in
t.ie session a good deal of excltsment wa i
caused by a formal application by Leiter ;
to the directors for n marginal price on
May , vvhlch was done , ho said. In order to
relieve the tension. This action had n favor
able effect on the market nnd resulted In ra
further advance In July , that delivery
finally petting up to STT&c , where It clossd.
May closed nt $1.01. After t'ie ' session closed
It became known that Leiter had sold
20000CO bu. of contract to Counfdnian &
Day. The price was not stated , I.elter
merely saying It wns disposed of at "mar
ket price. "
Corn \\ns weak with wheat. There was ,
more or less liquidation of long lines all
day nnd with the exception of a little
strength at the start prices were lower. The
late rally In the major market had a favor
able effect , prices recovering to a point
only a shade under yesterday's final figure.
May ranged from 30Vi030fC | to SOc and
closed at 30 if(30VSc. ( (
The market for oats reflected the action
of wheat nnd earn , though quite a good
buslnes" was done. Liquidation wns heavy
during the weakness In those markets nnd
a sharp decline resulted. There was good
buying on the break , but only part of the
losf was recovered. May ranged from JjUc >
to 2Cc and closed > i < 3c lower at 2GT2G' ( ! ic.
Provisions were weak from the outset.
The decline in stocks and grains -was re
sponsible for very general selling many
stop loss orders being recslved. The de
mand way only moderate and prices broke
" ' . the market ruling heavy to the close.
