attention. It was stated on the floor and
not denied by the Loiter Interests thut ur-

cablegrams brought liberal buying orders
to the seaboard , and about an hour from
the close here It was stated that seventy
boat loads ( about KO.OOO bu. ) had been taken
for export. A considerable pirtion was from
Philadelphia and Italtlmoru. Three steam
ers chartered were supposed to bo for
I tltor'a grain. Closing cables were all firm

port business gave a touch of genuine cjc-
cltomcnt to the market , sending shorts to
cover In a hurry , and the price wns sent
up to 9S-V c , the top figure of the day. Then
the market quieted some. There was a
tendency to even up over the holiday which
caused operations to recede somewhat. Jlny
was bringing ! )7-MiU7c ) at the close.
- There wan a greatly Increased speculative
trade In corn , and the market was very

Though there wus not a great trade In
onts the market was strong nnd prices got
to the highest point for the crop. The
strength came from the peed export de

notable recent advances were due to the rumored

In the prices soon after being announced , The
buying of stocks on the New York exchange
for Lwvlnn account has been heavy during ttie
week , the demand for Americans having been
quite active In London nnd nt other foreign cen
ters. Resides the record transactions there are
reports of very heavy blocks of securities having
pasted to the hands of European holiVra at
private sale from the hands of reorganization
Interests. In view of this absorption of Ameri

foreign exchange market during the week Is
somewhat contradictory. Rut the easier rates
for money here have been attended by a ftlff-

naturally Induced the withholding of exchange

necelpts of all kinds of stock were light
today owing In large part to the unfavor
able conditions In the country for shipping ,
consequent upon the sleet storm.
CATTLE Receipts of cattle were light
nnd still there was a gain over yesterday
and a sllfrht gain over a week ago. this
was rather In the nature of a surprise , but
It Is probable that the very brisk opening
of yesterday's market wns pretty generally
telegraphed out Into the country , thus In
ducing shippers to make an effort to get
their cattle to market In spite of the coatIng -
Ing of Ice on the ground. The general mar
ket was lacking In Interest and ut the same
tlmo lesa satisfactory to sellers than yes
terday.
Deet Steers The offerings of beef
steers' consisted largely of medium to fair
ish stuff , with nothing very prime on sale.
\VhIlo the demand seemed to bo of liberal
proportions It was far from being as brisk
as yesterday morning and the trade was
slow to open. As to values the change was
not .great , the market bolng a little easier
than yesterday morning , but fully as good
as yesterday's late market. The more de
sirable kinds of cattle naturally held up
the best and were generally quoted as sellIng -
Ing about steady.
liutchers' Stock Cows nnd heifers were
quite brisk this morning owing to the
good demand and moderate receipts ami
were without doubt the best selling cattle
In the yards. The market on such cattle
was fully steady and the ten or a dozen
loads on sale were soon disposed of.
Stock Cattle. There were only a few
little bunches of stock cattle on sale , not
enough to cut much figure In the day's cat
tle business. There was demand sufficient
to take nil the offerings and the pens were
soon cleared of the fresh arrivals. In spite
of the most .Unfavorable weather there has
been some little country demand , and ns
the cattle have been steadily going out ,
with only a few coming In , the surplus In
the hands of speculators Is running low.
The coming of favorable weather once
more ought to usher In a revival of the
feeder and stocker trade , lleprcscntatlve
HOQS-The hog market wan In a little bettor
shape for ths Boilers today , values being n shade
stronger. The market opened stronger and the
trade wna fiilily uctlvn nt th prevailing prices.
For u tlmo It slacked up a little , but the clo&o
came reasonably early and strong , with OV T-
thlng sold.
The quality of the bogs coming forward Is
very uniform , nnd the difference In value be
tween the best nnd least desirable loads Is extremely -
tromoly narrow , nnd for that reason the great
bulk nf the receipts sell nt ono price ,
Heavy loads today averaging 300 pounds and
above sold ut 13.75. while yesterday there were
a few loads at t.l.7i'/i. '
Medium weight nnd light loads brought J3.730
S.ttM , the top being 2'fcc ' higher than yesterday.
The strength of Iho market was shown In the.
larger proportion of sales at J3.SO today.
Thn averngu of all the sales was UJo higher
than yesterday , 6c higher than n week ago. 2So
higher than c. month niro and K2o higher than a
yenr ngo. Representative s.iles ;
BIIBKP HeeolpU of fheepvrre the emallest
In some days , only seven carloads Lelntt lepurled
In the yards. The market wan slow , but stout
