CATTLU-Yesterday's receipts of cattle
were liberal and the market was In ex
ceedingly good shape so that under ordinary
circumstances a laigo run might have been
expected for today. The storm , however ,
which set in early in the day , yesterday , oft-
set any Inclination that shippers may have
felt toward sending in their cattle. The
lesult was a very light run. In fact the
lightest of any day In u long time excepting
only Saturdays. The market as a whole
was In very satisfactory condition as re
gards the selling Interests and most every
thing In the way of killing- cattle changed
hands early in the day.
Beef Steers While a very considerable
proportion of the receipts consisted of corn
ted beeves , the actual offerings were light.
As the demand was good , and as still lighter
receipts were anticipated for tomoirovv on
account of the weather today , the buyers
weie all anxious for as many cattle as
they could get. In consequence the mniket
was active and a little stronger. The buy
ers bought up everything offered early and
the late tialns , as they came In , though the
market eased off and became rather dull
toward the close.
Butchers' Stock Cows and belfeis were In
light supply , in fact the receipts of that
kind of cattle for several days have fallen
behind the requirements of the local killers.
With the prospect good for still lighter re
ceipts during the next few days to corns
buyers wanted everything1 to bo had. As
was the case with beef steers , the market
was active and stronger.
Stock Cattle The character of the market
was such as to preclude the possibility of
there being anything of consequence done
In feeders or stock cattle. There wore very
few fresh cattle in and very few wanted.
Speculatois all had some cattle on hand ,
but as was to be expected under the pre
vailing weather conditions , there was very
llttlo demand from the country , llepre-

la this etory Mr. Haggard mnlces
a aow demonstration of his won-
Oorful power In tbo Held of pure
romance. Ho once more boldly
lifts tbo curtain that hides the fa to
of nations dead and burled In the
ages of which no record remains ,
except In the silent ruins of their
cities.
Zlinboe , an Inland' ' trading city
that flourished In tha heart of
Africa 3,000 years ago , and peopled
by the Phoenicians , Is the eceno of
the story. To this city cornea
Prince Azlcl , a grandson ot King
Solomon , accompanied by Isaachar ,
a prlcet of Israel , and Motom , a
Phoenician trader , wto brings a
caravan of merchandise.
In Bllssa , daughter of Sakon , king-
of Zlmboo , the prince meets his
fato. King Ithohal , lord of many
legions of si\ago warriors , Is al
ready a eultor lor her band. Ho
sues lo true barbarian foBulon ,
aeolts to carry her off by force , and
la felled la the attempt by Prince
Azlol. The otory unfolda Itaolf
around the feud between the Prlneo
of Israel and the savage King Itho-
bal. Ellssa baa elvm her heart
to Azlol , and loatha the barbarian
monarch. Isaachar , the priest , la
determined that no prince of the
bouso ot David shall wed a heathen
maiden , whoso people worship Dual.
A0 a result of bis Intrigues , Elissa
"is elected tbo high priestess of
naal.
This fixes an Impnesablo religious
gulf .between . her and Azlel. Their
passionate love seoko to eurmouat
all barriers. Meamttmo , Ithobal
draws hla huge army of savages
arouctl the fated city , and d em mul
ing Ellcsa , la marriage , prepares
to destroy It If ho la refused. How
DHusa violates her oalh as high
priestess and prepares to fly with
Azlel ; how they arc bath discovered
and threatened with death by tbo
priests of Daal ; how , to save each
other , she , by her right no tbo high
priestess of Haal , names him her
husband , while bo renounces hla
faith and offers incenco to Baal ;
how Ithobal'u bordo of savages
storms the walla of tlio city , and
both Azlcl and Klltaa fall into bI/ >
power ; and bow , at last , Azlol es
capes with hie llfo by Kllc a'a
feigned submission to Itbobal , she
In turn escaping Itbobal by killing
herself , Is all told In Mr , Haggard's
most fascinating manner ,
The awful ceremonies to the temple -
< plo of Daal , the weird rites In the
sacred groves of Zlmboe , and the
barbaroua battle scopes of that far-
off time , are described wltb all the
author's marvelous wealth of Imag-
Inatlvo rcjourct ,
It la a story that will surely rank
