CHICAGO , Fob. 9-Aftcr ruling strong
until within fifteen minutes of the close
whcnt took n sudden and Inglorious fall.
Unlo.iOltiB credited by some to CuJahy and
l.clter nnd by others to St. Louis holders
Blurted the market down and resulted In a
Ions of % c iidv.inco nnd u fraction besides ,
the market closing UQc lower. Corn and
outs were- dull nnd nctlvo b'y turns , but
closed with very little change In prices.
I'rovlslans ugnln advanced sharply , closing
prices showing GflH&c Kilns.
The cnrly nnifkot for wheat was rather
colorless. Mny , o | > ptuil at a shade under
yesterday's closing prices , llrst trades being
Jnndo ut sa'AiQWMQ ' , but the market wns
Htcaily nnd .held for nwhllc nt those MR-
ures : then slowly ndvnnccd nnd ruled strong
for fully un hour , May In the meantime
getting up to DGft9G > ic. The early news
If anything favored n decline , but as usual
traders were apparently afraid to put out
any HUPS , and outside of covering of one
fairly largo line the market was exception
ally dull for some time. Early .Liverpool
cables showed about % < ! advance , hardly n
full response to yeaterday'8 advance here.
Northwest receipts were liberal , .Minneap
olis and Duluth reporting SIS cara , against
2iil curs last week und 21 $ cnrs n year ago ,
Chicago receipts were sixty-seven cars ,
four ( if this number being contract , i es
ter-Jay's export engagements were llnally
put at fifty-four lontloads , and continuation
of the dumand wns looked for by Borne nt
the opening , but on the contrary New York
reported cables bringing no buying orders
und adding that Argentine offerings were
expected to liR-rcasu shortly. This news ,
however , had hardly any effect on the mar
ket. There was a well defined rumor In
circulation that u elmtp upturn was a part
of this Lelter program for the session , and
this undoubtedly kept many would-be sell
ers aloof , Sttcngth developed In the coarse
grain and provision markets had some ef
fect on t'niadvance. . After rising to .VWi ?
90-Vic the market settled back to aboilt the
level of the opening prices , then gradually
gathered strength , with a trade much
larger and moro general. Later news from
thu scaboanl was muuh more encouraging ,
Haltlmoro reiiorted a large cargo sold to
Franco and New York llnally put the day s
evport business at twenty-live loads. , Uy
12.CO there warf an urgent demand from all
over the pit and half an hour ft urn the close
Mny had reached U7c , the highest point of
the day. There It remained for a few min
utes , then suddenly the maikct collapsed.
Uurlng the advance there had been heavy
selling from some source. This was easily
taken cure of for a time , but llnally the
crowd , ( leurntlvcly Hpeaklng , turned tall
and the nellliiK orders came In n Hood ,
breaking the market In the lust fifteen
minutes of the session from t)7e ) to % c\ The
heavy liquidation was credited by some to
Lcltor or Cudahy iiifd by ot.iers to large
St. I ouls Interests. From whatever source
It was it hml HIP effect of turning a strong
market Into a weak one In n very short
time. May closed weak nnd nervous at
.
Corn ruled moderately active and firm
most of fie session , the market being espe
cially active toward the close. A good ex
port demand was reported. TMs and the
htrength of provisions kept prices well
above yesterday's figures till near the close ,
wien the slump In wheat caused free real
izing and most of the advance was lost.
May ranged from Zit'.ic to 2 : > > i'fI29V4c and
closed a nhaile higher lit MUffjlll'i.c. .
Oats were moderately active t.ircuphout ,
but did not develop much strength until
the session was well advanced , when the
strength of ot.icr markets and some cover-
Irg by shorts caused a fair advance. This
was maintained until the close , when the
market broke In common with w eat nnd
corn. Tin1 high point of today was the
best yet-ri-nc ltd on the crop. May ranged
from 23c to 24V4c and closed n shade lower
nt 24fi24Tlc. {
The maiket on provisions was very active
nnd new high records were made for the
year. Opening trades were nt n slight ad
vance and under free purchases prices were
put up sharply. Liter prices settled back
on realizing , but toward llio close the de
mand btx-amo vciy active again and the
market rallied , closing strong. Packers
were good Iniyirs on FOft spots ant ] shorts
covered freely. Tie advance was In spite
of large hog receipts. At the cliso May
pork was HVic higher at 110.00 , Slay lard So
higher at $3.10 and May rlbj 7VSc higher at
$3 LM.
Estimated receipts Thursday : Wheat , GJ

NEW YOniC , Feb. 9. The most notable feature
of the stock market today was the strong rally
In the fifteen minutes of trading. After 2 o'clock
the bears started a , raid , apparently wltth nn 0,7-
sreKSlvo dclermlna-tlon to shake out weakly mar
gined holdings and to reach stop loss ordem.
They seemed to succeed admirably In forcing-
down prices , destines ransliii- from 1 to 2 polnto
all through the list , but the uppcunuici * ot sup-
pun at the luw level led to a covering movu-
in.'iil , which became a rush and the closlni ; w.m
very HUe a rout of the bears. Subitantlal re
coveries wee scored very Renernlly and In a
largo number of cuai'a the earlier declines were
entirely wiped out. The maiKet wns one of up *
and doims all day. the opentnt ; ahowliiR numer-
OUH signs of henvlnexs In splto of a higher mnce
of prices reported from Ixindon. The bulls
promptly offured support and ralllnl , the murKei
holding up tu noon , when a tendency to realize
sent prices downward again. 'lUiu Cuban sltua-
tlun discouniKed agrircKHtvu tactics on the part of
the bulls , the professional trudera being disposed
tt > realize nil day. There waa u decrease In th
volume of business also , and a falling otf In tlio
outside Interest. The declines , however , brought
nut fc-oad buylnt ; . Michigan Central , Northwest
ern and Omaha showed special signs of strength ,
and the local street railway companies also ad
vanced quite vigorously. Union I'aeinc securllli-s
w ro all quite Ktrontf , the advance apparently
helne due to u belief that the rcarRunlzatlon
cummltteo had concluded to secure Ihe Kansas
division even nt the government's own terms.
Gn'.it Northern prcfened was conspicuous for n
reaction of nearly 4 points from Its recent re
markable advance. lullman waa marked up 3Vj
points on email transactions and Itubber pre
ferred scored a sharp advance. .London boucht
stocks here on balance.
Money continued to rule below 114 per cent for
call loans and there were rejKirla of large loons
for u year at 34 ! per cent. The withdrawal of
tlio 10 per cent Installment of the government
deposit of Union 1'aclllo payment wns reflee'ed
In n credit balance at the clearing house for the
subtreasury of JCS2.10) . The HUbtreosury liab
been having a dally debit balance nt thu clear-
InK house of tOOJ.'XK ' ) or upward for some time
past The plethora of money was not ap
preciably relieved by the operation. KterlliiB ex
change hardened nn additional fraction. The
current demand for exchange Is believed to be
duo to sr > me largo financial operations Involving
settlements abroad. ,
The hpeculntlve bonds showed a reactionary
tendency In sympathy with stocks , but prlce.-i of
bonds for the most oart held flrm. Total sales ,
J4,230,0 . United Slates old 4s , coupon , and the
new 4s , registered , were Vd lower bid.
The Evening Post's London financial cabl
says : Ixird Salisbury's speech last night failed
to stimulate the stock markets here today. They
were Idlt- and dull. The rumor that the differ
ences between the Orand Trunk nnd the
Canadian I'aelllc have been arranged cannot b
conllrmed. Knlllrs were suddenly flat nt the
cltno nn sales on President Kruger's re-election
Amerlntns opened above the parity with but
little heart. They recovered later on New York
buying and cloned steady. Discounts advanced
perceptibly today nnd the market borrowed
largely from tlm bank. There wns a sharp de
cline In Greek exchange.

The soft weather lias placeil the yards In
bud condition , the accumulations of the
winter having been thawed out. A freeze
would be very grateful to handlers of cattle
and to all whoso business takes them Into
the yards.
CATTI-iE Yesterday's liberal run wns fol
lowed by quite largo receipts again today ,
11G fresh loads being reported In. A con
siderable proportion of the cattle here con
sisted of cornfed beeves , with a liberal
-sprinkling of stock cattle nnd cow stuff.
The large receipts , Instead of depressing
the market , seemed to have n beneficial
effect , und It was the most active market
In a good many days.
BEEF STE1211S Although the offerings of
beef cattle were larger than on most days
of late , they seemed none too largo for
the demand. The liberal receipts seemed to
attract additional buyers and both packers
and shippers were In the field. Uuyers
seemed to want the cattle and they did not
waste much time , but got down to busi
ness ut once. The alleys were soon crowded
with cattle moving : toward the scales , and
they remained that way until practically
everything was sold and welRhod up. The
prices paid were fully steady and even
strong on the most desirable kinds.
BUTCHERS' STOCK The market on
cows and heifers was In about the same
condition as the market on fat steers. The
buyers seemed to want all that there were
here , and the market was active and fully
steady , possibly strong In some Instances.
Bulls and stags sold about like yesterday.
Veal calves are bringing way up prices ,
the most desirable veals going readily at $0.
STOCK CATTLE The situation In the
feeder market was not so favorable to the
sellers as waa ttie case with fat cattle.
Yesterday speculators bought freely and
illled their pens with the expectation that
there would be a good country demand , but
the anticipated buyers from the country did
not materialize. The weather was dark
and rainy , which seemed to keep would-be
buyers out of the yards , The result was a
slow and lower market , and It was late
before the fresh arrivals were disposed of.

Zlmftoo , on Inland1 trading city

the story. To this city comcn

In Ellssa , daughter o ? Sakon , king
of Zlmboo , the prlnco meets his
fate. King Itholial , lord of many
legions of savage- warriors , la al

monarch. Isaachar , the priest , la

Aa a result of bis Intrigues , Kllssa

Baal.
This fixes an Itnpaesablo rellfiloua

to destroy It If ho U refused. How
Bllraa violates her oitli au high

Azlel ; how they are both discovered
nnd threatened' ' with death by the
prlesta of Baal ; how , to tsavo each
other , ahe , by her right na the high
priestess of Baal , names him her
