V ADVANCES WHERE DECLINE IS LOOKED FOR torn nml Ofitn Hoiimln Dull anil Show Ijlflli * ClinnmIn fltiolnllom , \Vlillc Priivlnloiin I U'cede Several rolntn , CHICAGO , Pcb. 1. An unexpected reac tion took place In wheat today , May closing Ic higher. Nearly every trader on the floor was expecting a decline , but the sensational reduction In Liverpool stocks nnd a sharp ndvancc In prices there nftcr a weak open ing Illustrated the uncertainties of wheat trading by sending prices up nnd keeping them there. Corn nnd oats were dull and showed little change In quotations. Pro visions declined lOc. The opening In wheat furnished a genuine nurprlBO to traders. It was generally be lieved that following the heavy liquidation of last week nnd the closing out of long lines by many of the more prominent bulls that the market was In for a period of reac tion , Home traders even predicting DOc for May again. News from Liverpool completely upset these calculation's and caused a gen eral skurrylng' of shorts for cover. May , which closed yesterday nt 9lc , opened to day at from 'J5 c to 5Hc , with very llttlo offering even nt those figures , go active was the competition foran hour that 8Cc was paid before enough wheat was forthcoming < to check thu enthusiasm of buyers. Liver pool opened Htfil'/Sd lower , responding well to yesterday's decline here , but by 2:30 : p. jn. showed a complete reversal of form , prices ut that time being Uft'&l ' over yes terday's prices. The nensatlon of the day'H news was the decrease for January of 1,243- 100 liti. In the stocks at Liverpool. The stocks there now amount to 1,512,000 bu. , or only two weeks' supply. This was what started the buying furore. The market was ( further strengthened-by New York advices of good foreign buying of wheat futures. Minneapolis and Duluth receipts were 370 cars , nwilnst 323 lust week nnd 2m a year ago. C.ilcago receipts were 97 cars , 11' of which were of contract grade. Following the advance to OC jc came n slight reac'lon. Ite.illzlng sales caused a. temporary decline to sfil.T5i ! < . ' , but the Liverpool newswas too strong to bu so easily disposed of and the offerings were quickly absorbed. Then prices shot up again anil t'nls tlmo'May advanced to ! ? io before stopping. Then It slowly declined. No nml weakness developed - veloped , however , till liradstreet's world's visible report was posted In the afternoon. Tills showed nn Increase of . " 0,000 bu. and was distinctly disappointing , as a decrease had been looked far. Liverpool closed % i % d higher , but continental cables were rather weak , and that and the Ilradstreot's repjrt turned the market we.ik In the last Jiour. May fell to pr.Vtc , but In the last few minutes trailing rallied again and closed steady at IGTiifi'JCc. There was a fair trade In corn. The mar ket was Inclined to sympathize with the wheat advance at llrst , but the government crop llgure.-i , 1K13,000,000 ! bu. , put a damper on buying lutur and dlssljr.itcd the slight advance. Shorts were good buyers uarly. May ranged from 2SiTl2Ue to 29ic , nnd closed unchanged at SS-'Hc. The feature In oats was the government crop report , but It Ihud a different effect from that In corn. The figures , 79S,7GS,000 bu. , fell 2.2,000,1)00 ) bu. short of estimates. There was fair buying by commission houses and some covering of short lines , but business as nl whole wis small. Prices ruled firm "t a slight advance. May ranged from 2lf/2l14c / to 23e , nnd closed a shade liltfnpr at 23W2lc. With the exception of n short period of stfidlnesrf after the opening , the market for provisions was wolik. Liberal receipts of hogs eiieoura.fed selling. In' which pack ers took a hand late In the day. At the close May pork was lOc lower at W.SO , May lard He lowar at ft.M ) and May ribs 5c lower at JI.S5. i" " \ Estimated receipt's for Wednesday : Wheat , 37 cars ; uoni , ZH ! > cars ; oats , 1G5 cars ; hogs. Heavy Lliinliliillon IH l'ollo\viMl by n nenernl Deelltie III Viilnen , NEW YORK , Feb. l.-The stock market to day had a load of liquidation to carry still heavier that that tof yesterday and there were fewer prominent stocks to exert a sustaining force by special slrength. The heavy offerings were well al > sorbed and net declines are1 for the mot part oonllned to fractions , , but are general. FOr n time after the opening there seemed to be no diminution from yesterday's activity. There had evidently been a large accumulation of out side orders -over night nnd London was also a buyer of stock. This demand was satlsllcd , how ever , without effecting any marked advance In pi Ices , the offerings being very large. Later prices began to yield under the weight of con- Uiuied offerings , but the pressure was not great. The market foil Into dullness , holders apparently being content to await u rally to continue the liquidation The rallies were helped by tin1 con tinuing slrength of a , number of stocks , es pecially Union Pnclllo nnd nil Its securities. The strength of these gained during the dny and this stock closed at the highest at a net advance of over a point , Ilaltlmore & Ohio showed early weakness , but rallied 2 % on an unaulhorlzed as- Kcrllom that the reorganization plan had been agreed upon. Upon Hie denial of this the stock fell away , but closed with a small net gain. The Ohio soft coal roads gave evldenco of slrenglh on Hie boiler oullook for the coal tralllc and re ports of an agreement among them for Its dis tribution. Des Molnes & Fort Dodge made a conspicuous movement of 3 % per cent. There wen * some very marked gains also among usually dormant slocks , such as Great Northern pre- fened , Chicago & Eastern Illinois preferred , Cleveland , Cincinnati , Chicago & St. Louis pre ferred , Adams' Express nnd Susquehanna. & Western preferred. There were periods of stiength In olher slocks during Ihe day , notably the local tracllon companies. Weslern Union nml General Electric , but Ihe order of Ihe day was prollt taking iand this tendency extended even to Northern Pacific preferred , upon which there WB-I a quarterly dividend of 1 per cent declared late In the dny. London bought some stocks early In this market , but aold more later , which probably had nn Influence In giving a somewhat stlffer lone to the exchange markel. It Is noted , however. Hint u part of Ihe cosh from the In- lerlor which Is being received In New York Is duo lo remlllances on nccounl of Australian gold received nt San Francisco , to the order of New the ncllvlty In the commercial department of the money market today , the supply showing a decided Increase , but without any quotable ef fect on the rates. The rates for call loans worked to a lower basis In spite of the with drawal of thn second 10 per cent Installment of the government's deposits of the Union Pacific payment. This withdrawal was called for to morrow , but most of It was mndo today. In the bond market the Kansas Pacific con sols were the most conspicuous feature , with nn advance of 8 % per cent to 110 % , Other bonds of the Kansas Paclllc advanced 1 to 3 points on the belief uhat they would be Included In the Union Pacific reorganization with or without on nr- inpgcment with the government. The bond mar ket generally showed a continuance of nctlvlly and prices continued to advance. Totiil sales , $ < U40.0i > . At the same tlmo other markets were reported as llrm , so that the general conditions were favorable for the sellingInterests. . A considerable proportion of the receipts was made up , of cornfed steers , and as the local dressed beef demand was good there was no reason why the market should not be In good condition. In fact , taken as a whole , It was fulriy satisfactory , values being fully steady nnd even strong on the most desirable kinds. The market was not very snappy , and still It was reasonably active and the most of the offerings changed -hands quite early In the fore noon. The average quality of the cattle was fair and there were some pretty docent - cent lots on sale. The offerings of butchers' stock were not very large , as might be Inferred from the total receipts , while at the same time there was an uotlve demand. The local packers seemed to want the cows and 'heifers and they were out early and bought freely. The result was a strong and active mar ket , with an early clearance. There was no great number of stockers and feeders among the fresh receipts , but speculators had some on hand carried over from yesterday , so that the total sup ply was of fair proportions as compared to the demand.
