THE ( XMAIIA DAILY BElIs SUS'tfiAY. JANUARY 1C , 1808. 11 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Weather of List Week Not Well Calculated to Stltnnlato Trade. MONEY IS EASY AND COLLECTIONS GOOD r * llcpnrl SnllKfni'lnry llu lin-tii tnr I'lrit llnlf of .Iitiiuitry Kctiilt Triutr < 5onil. InltVcnllicr IJc- c I ill- ill } ' U11 fit vo ruble. The last week has wltncusc-d a very fair business doing In all departments of trade nnd still the general situation lias liccn without nny tspeclally Interesting feature thnt would distinguish It from the previous week , AH thu ovation draws away from the lialldays. however , the nuvi-nu-nt of mur- cbamllso In a Jobbing way showH distinct Improvement and with the arrival of the middle of the month the course of busl- new may bu said to have returned to the normal. Kor reasons already pointed out no very great activity was anticipated In the dcmnnd for merchandise from the conn- try tributary to this market so that the present very satisfactory movement Is highly gratifying , ncprcnentnllve houses wltnuut cxciptlon report n very good Jnnu volume of business nry demand and the total ness for the first half of the month will compare very favorably with the corre- rpomllng period of any previous year In tno history of Omaha. Money In the country appears to be rea sonably easy and country consumers are Ptlll buying quite freely In splto of the fact tnat the consumptive demand In No vember and December was unusually hThe' ( local retail trade of the last week was somewhat spotted , that Is there were Couil days and poor ones , owing to the Btato of the weatncr. Thu llrsl half ot the week stoppers did not venture out In any treat numbers , but Wire apparently waitIng - Ing for more agrceible weather. Toward the latter part of the week there was fair buying , ihoiivli on come days thu weather was dark and threatening and not of u character calculated to tcir.pt shoppers forth The fact that the weather la HO mild Is also n drawback In a good many departments' nnd snappy cold weather Is lie. ( led to put 'more life Into the demand for strictly cold weather merchandise. Taking the month to date as ti whole. however , It must be admitted that the retail trade has been cxc'ptloually good ns compared with the record of previous years. Hie latge Increase In thu number of wane earners locally Is helping the retail trade of the city In no small way , while the greater prosperity attending all busi ness ventures has placed n much larger volume of money In general circulation , nil of which Is to the great benefit of the re tail trade. The large gains In the volume of clearings of local bunks bear out the statement made above to the effect that the first half of January has wltncssjd an unusually pras- perous business In all departments of trade. As to the future of trade there appears to be but ona qu stlon current among those usually best Informed as to the course of events Traveling men nre out with their spring lines and reports from all sources agree that there Is n general feeling of encouragement and hopefulness among the retail merchants of the west. Farmers still have larpe quantities of corn on hand , while the country Is full of live stork re maining to be turned Into money. Under the circumstances It Is hard to see why money should not continue easy In the country and with that fact assured a good spring business Is practically u certainty. OMAHA ti i\Ktl.V I. MAKICETn. Wheat wns surprisingly strong when con trasted with thp weak feeling that prc- vnlled nt the close yesterday. Calls for the day had been so'.d ut BO'.ic ' , but It was said most of those privileges hud been bought up by people who were short as a safeguard against the principal eccentrici ties of so erratic n market. The Liverpool market closed fromKd * to Hd his her than It did yesterday. This was somewhat of a surprise to tiaders , many of whom had sold short yesterday In anticipation of a decline hero today , nnd caused considerable covering. The week's shipments of wheat and Hour as reported by Uradstreet's \\aa S.l.Tj.wO bu. , against S,4slC03 ! bu. the weeki before nnd 3,1MS , < KX ) bu. the corresponding week of ISfl" . The Minne apolis and Dulutlt receipts wer > 333 earn , asalnst 357 cars the corresponding day of the previous week nnd 2UI cars a year ago. Chicago receipts were 35 cars , 13 of which were of contract quality. The snow that v.-as falling and had already fall-it was a ronssurunce regarding the promise of the crop. Liverpool reported spot wheat weak and 2d lower for California , with sellers of Ar.irentlne wheat nt 3d pr quarter lower than It was offered Friday. The closing continental cables showed some recovery from the previous day's heavy decline , and that tended to strengthen the hands of the bulls. Paris showed a rlso of fiOc In Jan uary Hour , and 20c In March-June , besides 3..c In January wheat nnd Co In wheat for the March-June term. The exports for the day were moderate nt SGO.OCO bu. Uusln.'ss was at no time very heavy. While trading still continues to be done chlclly for May delivery , there Is a growing disposition t3 work clear of It and transfer speculative dealings Into July , thu proportion of trade In which Is growing dally. After the early advance , the offerings somewhat exceeded the demand , and the price sagged to be tween B0 > 4c nnd 90V4c , but got .cood . support at that and closed ut PO'.ic bid. Business In c : > rn was extremely dull nnd merely of a scalping character. The gen eral tendency of tne market was downward , more from dullness than from nny bear ish news. The Kencrnl ap- prnranco of the market { his week has boon one of great activity nnd strength , but a closer Inspection will Indicate that" the activity has been more distributed 'than the strength. Industrial stacks nrc on the whole lower and many Important railroad slocks , Including the grangers , are hardly so well off as they were a week ago. The market's appearance of strength has been due to large buying on a rising market of the Northern Paelllc slocks. Union Pacific nnd the Vanderbllts , The strength of Union Pacific has been communicated to the stocks of the disintegrated portions of the old system now operated by separate reorganized companies. The announcement that 'the ' Union 1'nclflc liad bought a controlling In terest In the- Oregon Short. Line explained this movement. Much was made Also of the prospects of a big Klondike business over these lines and the Northern 1'aclflc. The Ohio soft coal reads have 'been ' prominent and strong. There haa been unprecedented activity and record prices In the bond division and largo Investment demand for gilt-edged slocks and an Increased outside Interest In the stock market. On the other hand there has been Inter mittent realizing on a very heavy scale by large professional operators which has been a drag on the market. Sugar has been per sistently weak on account of President Have- mt-yer's recommendation that the surplus bo maintained for contingencies. The stock Is five points lower. Manhattan Is over four points higher and the Northern Pacific stocks , Union Pacific and the leading Vander- bilts from 2 to 3 per cent higher. HI2VII3W OF THI3 WHEAT MAIUCET. Wcek'M Tendency Him Ileeii Tinviiril Iiower I t vel < > f I'rlt' 'H. CHICAGO , Jan. 15 , The course of the wheat market the past week has been Irregularly downward , quite pronounced weakness developing at 'times , but support was given the market at critical points and the net decline was net heavy. Trading at no tlmo was 'heavy. ' The Inactivity of the market is best shown by the range of prices , which was but 2 cents , May fluctuating be tween 01 % and 80 % cunts. Yesterday's clos ing price , 60090 % cents , shows a decline of ? ® % cents for the week. The market was weakened on Saturday by failure of n predicted cold wave to materialize , which caused considerable liquidation by those who had bought oa predictions of crop damages. Weakness of the foreign markets , coupled with an almost stagnant condition of trade , resulted Monday in accnt break. Part of this was recovered Tuesday on buying by the Letter crowd , which started a general covering movement by shorts , but for the rest of the week the trend of the market was downward. The extreme weakness which developed at Liverpool was partly responsible for the decline. Indirectly also the gradually Increasing offerings of wheat from the new Argentine crop cut quite a figure , as they apparently played an Important part In the declines in the foreign market. The Loiter Interests gave the market good support on Thursday , when the price got to SO cents , but on Friday were sellers at the low point , OUTLAWS IMASO.VIU IXSUUA.VCIS. Nearly all the cattle hero were killers , so that for a Steurday the offerings were qulto large. The market as alioli \ was about as dull and unsatisfactory as could be Im agined , It was In fact n typical Saturday's market , only a little more so than common. The requirements of the buyers seemwl to be very limited and they did not net as If they needed many cattle. The market on cow ? .ml heifers was also aow ! and weak , though not so very much lower than yesterday. The offerings , con sisting of ten or a dozen loads , were eventually taken , but It was late bcforn a clearance was effected. Stockers and feeders were In light supply and as usual at the close of the. week there was not. much doing In that division of the yards. Tno cattle market of the past week ex perienced both good anil- bad days. The re ceipts were the largest of any week since be fore the holidays , but the demand was also large , so that there was no surplus of cattle on sale. During the early part of the week the general tendency was upward and on some days the market was full of encourage ment , . so that the prospect was most pleas ing to sellers. It was generally realized , however , that the advance had been fore I by light receipts and that u heavy run -vonld tend to break values down again , for that reason a sharp reaction was not entirely un expected. The break came on Friday and was the result of large receipts and lower markets at other selling points , which de pressed the market here and closed the week ivlth a dull anil unsatisfactory market. One of the features of the cattle trade of the past week were the extremely high prices paid for light stock cattle welshing 403 to WV ) pounds , such cattle brlnglnt" as much as the best fat cattle. The supply of feeders was rather light , but the demand was good and the market continued strong right up to the close of tie ! week In splto of the breik < n beef cattle.
