OMAHA OI-TICK. Jan. 7. Although cables
came lie higher t'.ils morning. our market
cpened a small fraction lower than last night's
close on everything , excepting OHts. It was but
11 moment , however , before the situation was ie-
nll/pj nnd prices advanced steadily unlll near
the cloie , when moie strength was exhibited
ami tinday's business was wound up at an ad
vance of le for July , H e for May and l o for
cash or January.
Corn advanced ' /tc nnd oats \e , which shows
where the attention was , since the greater ad
vance was In th ( * enrh grain , and Hie oilier
prices advanced In proportion according to the
distance In tlmn ot delivery.
The reports show clearances of W.OOO bushels
of wheat and Hour , with Newport News to hear
from , with Krnncc a buyer of red winter wheat
nnd on stronger and higher cash prices In nil
American maiketx , which started i-horts to buyIng -
Ing liberally. The north and west , too , were
good buyers In Chicago , with lighter receipts re
ported ,
These facts , with an Indication of their con
tinuance. will uphill ! our belief for higher
prices. AYhlle the wheat situation Is n peculiar
one and may teem n little treaoherous to the
average trader , there Is u good Held for buying
In corn and oils , both of which are now lluclu-
atlng in sympathy with wheat ut n narrower
range , giving time to get In und out at fctlpu-
lati'd prices.

NKW YORK. Jan. 7. The market for stocks
toilay did not differ materially from that of yes
terday. The aggressive mood of the bull con
tingent continued and the piofcsslomit operators
were buyers of stotks. That they 'ncre rein
forced by a maiked addition of outside Interest
In the market was shown by the large number
of orders In speculative stocks placed througa

absorption of bonds of all cvfcrlptlons , very
heavy orders being placed In the high grade
Issues as nell as In the speculative Issues ami
moderato irade bonds. The pcsuru : for funds
for reinvestment , which ha\u been released by
the January dividend and Interest payments , was
viry obvious. There was also a nmrked weak
ening of the rales for money , notwithstanding
the lively awakening of speculation. Efforts were
made by Ihe banks and money lendeis to keep
the rate for money as high as 3 per cenl. I oans
In fact weie placed al 3 per cent , but the rate
wilfgeij off to 2 per cent , and the last loan only
commanded 214 per cent. Owners of money were
also lively bidders for commercial paper. This
served lo sllmulate the spccufalhu luior whleli

international stocks , notably Union Paclllc and

was alst * K lenewal of old icpoits of a combina

movement was that in Suhiiuehunna & ucstc n

control of the property to Uric Interests. The
fears of minority stockholders led to nn unload
ing of their holdings anil a slump of 8 points in
the common stock , without recovery , " and of C

were very strong on the belief ( bat there would

CATTljK The cattle market closely re
sembled that of a good many other days ot
late. In thai the receipts were very light nnd
the trade entirely lacking In features of
Interest . Kor that reason there Is very llttlo
that call bo said regarding It and nothing
but what has already be-en explained lo
sMppors. Wllh only forty-eight loads of all
kinds of cattle on sale , there was nothing
to awaken much enthusiasm , even under the
most favorable conditions.
The callle shipped In for beef ranged from
common half fat stuff to medium quality ,
with not a Hlnglo load of good beet on sale.
Such as there were here sold at about the
same prices as pro-vailed on yesterday's mar
ket , the bust being good enough to bring
only $1.43. ,
The market on cows and heifers was also
just about Hleady with yesterday , no ma
terial change In the situation being noted.
Stackers nnd feeders brought strong prices
and the throe or four loads offered sold
readilyAsalruady explained In this con
nection , Ihero Is a country demand which Is
equal to tlie. absorption of a. few loads dally
and there Is a very evident willingness to
pay good prices , but as a matter of course
at this season no great number could bo sold.
