OMATTA DAILY JJ13I3 : FHIDAY. JANUARY 7 , 1898 , COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL 'Wheat Recovers frcm It ? Setback and Wakes an Advance. NEWS AT THE OPENING WAS VERY BEARISH Inilirovcil Ciinti Nltiintlon l.nlcr nil n Iti'firtlon , Jilt- r Co I'M mill Ontn Also Ailvancc. CHICAGO , Jan. 6. bearish statistical Itcws iirodomlnatod In the wheat mnrkel for the llrst part of today's session nnd the prlco declined. The Improved cash situa tion stnrtcd things the other wny and nt the cloBo liny wht-nt showed He advance over yesterday's Ilnal iirlce. July , however , cloned % c lower. Corn , after weakness , he- came strong nnd closed Htf'.io higher. Oats was llrm nnd itdvaiiccU % 't/l4e. / 1'rovlslons declined 7VjW12 c , News affecting trading whcnt before trad. Ing began wan chlelly bearish nnd that was clearly the effect It had upon the specula tors. Mny , which closed yesterday at lOV c , opened at from We down to S9V c , sold very sparingly nt WiiW'.ie ' and then slid off quickly to SsyHc. i''or two hours the runge of the fluctuations was practically limited between tin1 extremes mentioned , The main points of the wirly market Informa tion were us follows : Liverpool quoted a decline of Utd to st.irt with and the reason for It was In one calmgratn nscrlbi-d to llb ral offerings ot Ar6 ittlne wheat and In another to Thonmn's reported export mirplus ot 1WW/,0A ) ) hu. still available In this country. A private cablegram irom 1'iii-la said wheat was rapidly declining ana the market very weak and depressed. Ihe 1'rlcu Currtiit remarked of thf condition of winter wheat that It was generally pro tected by snow. North wuatei'n leeclpts also were. Bill ! too liberal to oreato flesh bullish sentlm nt. Minneapolis and IJuluth 1 received 37G cailoads , curnpnrVd with 5st : lust weak , but tht-y looked heavy when put uguliiHt iu'J earloails a year a o. Itussla's vneuuriiKeini-nt to shipments of Hour from that country In prefeiencs to wheat , In the Hhape of rehali'S In railroad freights ot from 15 to 20 per cent in favor ot Hour , was also considered a reason lor lower prices here. The only bullish feature ot the early news was the small Chicago receljitrt. The number ot ears Inspected here was forty- one , against eighty expected , and only three of the lot Irspei-teil contract. Some features of the local cash wheat market came Into play later lit the day and were one reason for a change that took place In speculative rentltni'iit and turned despondency nt the beginning Into buoyancy In the latter half of the Btaslon. No. 3 spring was sold In car lots at vjc , when .May was quoted at S'.P/ie , and g.neially the off grades In the cample market were bringing more money by trom Ic to 3c per bushel than the same quality sold at yisterday. The upward turn to the market was helped also by the llhi nil eJeiiratUTS fium Atlantic ports , which in Wheat and Hour amounted to CCUm:0 : bu. Itepurls from llaltlmore were likewise forthcoming to the effect that three Hteuiaern had benn chartered there for win at , and New Yotk also reported Homo flesh business done for export. Clos ing1 cahlea miule I.lveipaol latest prices from > , id tu 1'iid lo cr than tlioso of the lirevlons day. 1'crimps as iiilluentlal a fac tor In tin- afternoon hulgo as any was the fact that several heavy local shorts bought utoadlly for an hour and then the price of May was bnweeii S'J'-nSiTO'/HC. and when , owliifr to the late bnlllah advices trom the outside , the general crowd , who were short , tried to buy , they found the salable wheat ,1'ud all been assorted. The prlee for May ts'owly rri-M'tred to 'Jfl'/le and moved up more rapidly afterward to 'JUii ! ( < ' Te , and i-io.sed at M > He bid , or 'AC higher than It did yesterday. C'orn wiia nudsrately active , following In Its course the changes In wheat prices. Tlii > mniki't was weak early with wheat , lull wnen that market reacted corn ad vanced fa easily that it appeared as though It had been prtty thoroughly liquidated. iMe.ir the close shorts became alarmed nnd the best prloes of- the day wore prevailing an Ihe session tndeil. May ranged front 2J > ifu2 ! sc to libftc. and closed ViiJ'/jc ' liiBrrr at I'm CiiU-K * ' , ( ; ats xvas .Jinn throughout the session , oven with wheat and corn weak. Shorts , linth larg-j and small , were ! constant buyers nnd their , opeiatlonM caused a slow but hteady ndvam-e In prices. The small supply of contriH't o.us -Clilcngo tended to create some anxloty among sliorts. A good uhlppliii ; demand ixlsted. May rained from Uvnii'JlIc to 23e and closed % igi4c higher at : : i'blii23c. ' Provisions were weak from the start. Jiog reeolpts both hen- and at western jiolntscn heavy , which was regarded as tuilllclcnt' Uiiuso for low = r opening prices. Our market , after oiienlnir steady with prices unchniiRed to 1 point hlRher , failed to respond to the KnKlleh activity ; In fact , the record of the day called a uooil deal of disappointment. The entile mvliiR of llurtuatlons was only a mutter of 3 points and the entire day's liUHlnees amounted to only lii.SOO bales , with the market llnn'ly steady nt an advance of Ift2 points. The pllsht appreciation was helped by further accounts fiom the south , pointing to a decreased acre age of eotton and broailenhiR attention to ce reals Instead.
