Corn was quite active and Irregular. It
-was firm at the opening on higher cable *
and the foreign demand , but broke quickly
on the unexpectedly heavy receipts. 931
cars , with qulto a rush of selling. The
heavier holders stood pat , however. In
sympathy with the late firmness ofwheat
the corn market became strong again , and
was well supported for the rest of the ses
sion. May ranged from SOVic to 2Dic , and
closed unchanged at W.fec.
The market for oats was a very broad
and Important one. The market shared the
opening firmness of wheat and corn , but
the advance provoked a flood of profit
tnklnir and short selling , which caused a
sharp decline. At the bottom heavy buying
commenced apaln , the Loiter Interests being
credited with the purchase of 7jO,000 bu. .
while other prominent people bought
heavily. Rumors of the sale of fifty loads
for direct shipment to London contributed
to the tlrmness. Closing iprlccs were the
highest for evernl months. tMay ranged
from 2lc to 2SJMT23Hc , closing at 24c.
Provisions at the start and for some time
after ivrere steady. Hog receipts > wcxe
small , and yard prices higher. whlcS helped
to maintain prices. Trading was dull with
outside orders limited , and fluctuations dur
ing the morning were narrow. A few ) min
utes before the close some heavy selling
orders , supposedly from John Cudahy ,
caused a slump and left the market weak.
At the clo o May pork was 6c lower at

NEW YORK. Dec. 23. The bears In the stock
market showed somewhat more confidence toda ;
and had same succem in reducing prices. The
most potent factor In their favor was the con

reyorted willingness of the secretary of the
treasury to resign his office. This report was erf

the government has supplied the money marke

m 'ket was not , however , markedly easier , loan
being made from 3tj to 4Vi per cent , wit
exceptions at the close of 3 per cent. Sterlln
exchange also continued steady. There are etl
several million. ! of the Pacific bonds which ma
lure January 1 and which are now available fo
redemption under the government's offer , but :
fs dltllcult to intimate how far the owners o
these bonds wilt avail themselves cf the govern

shorter periods , the rate being 3Jj per cent from
thirty to ninety days. Indicates a belief that the
rates may continue stiff after the first of the
year. The demand for money In Rsrllii nnd Ltm-

the Dank of England will not advance Its min

real stringency was threatened at this center.

CATTLE Today's receipts of cattle were
the largest In over a week , but of the
soventy-one loads here fourteen were con
signed direct to a. puckc : , o that there
was no great number on sale. At the pame
time the demand was of such meager pro
portions that comparatively few cattle
were wanted and. the market "ntis as dull
and unsatisfactory as at any time In the
last week or two.
Such cattle as Just happened to please the
buyers sold very nearly as well as yester
day , but as a general thing the market
was weak and lower. In addition to being
slow and draggy. Still they were all sold
before the close.
Whether buyers will bo able to keep cattle
tlo values down depends very much upon
the action of shippers. If th country
holds back the cattle and tne markets of
the country are given only a moderate sup
ply It may prove no easy matter to keep
the market down. On the other hand. If
the country gets panicky there can be no
doubt but -what feeders will be heavy
losers.
Packers iwanted a few cows and heifers
and the market on such a pleased them
was fully steady. While the market was
not overly active , the offerings of the stuff
were mostly all taken In good season.
Stockers and feeders sold at just about
steady prices. Representative sales :
