The bears In the stock market showed somewhat more confidence toda ; and had same succem in reducing prices. The most potent factor In their favor was the con tlnued firmness of the money market , but much was made , at one tlrao during the day. of the reyorted willingness of the secretary of the treasury to resign his office. This report was erf ecgerated Into a nory tJiat tne riuignauon. uuu actually been madVs nnd the effect was to pre cipitate a selling movement which was , however the professional traders am ever , confined to which reached only moderate proportions. The market showed no change from Its recent hall day character and ) Its semblance of waiting fo conditions In the money market to became more dHlned and fettled. Had It not been for tn sustaining influence In one or two q/ the spec laltleu notably Manhattan. Western Union an ; Brooklyn Trantlt. the scale would have Inclined much raoce siarply to the side of depression Third Avenue , which has been so prominent a feature In the recent market , reacted 5 point today and Plttsburg. Cleeland. . Cincinnati & St Louis preferred also fell conspicuously SH cent In the late dealings. The coalati were notably weak and New Jersey at one time fell 2 points Metropolitan Street Railway , which was deal In , extra dividend of Hi per cent , showed som fevcrlshness. but ended with a small net gain Hurllnston fell nearly a point below par In fac of a November statement show-Ins an Increase In net earnings over last year of J323.7SS. even after- the operating expenses of the road had bee run up over JC30.W ) above Iclit year. Todiy' clearing house statement showed the treasurj department a debtor on balar.ce . to the exten of S1.177.S34. Yesterday's Union Pacific paymen by the teorganlzatlon committee found a plac In today's clearing house operations. It Involved the payment Into the subtreasury of about Si & . OO ) In cash. It follows that the subtreasury pal out today over J3arO.CO ) for redemption of Pacific bonds , lly yesterdays and today's operations the government has supplied the money marke with over tZ.KO.OV > on balance. The tone of th m 'ket was not , however , markedly easier , loan being made from 3tj to 4Vi per cent , wit exceptions at the close of 3 per cent. Sterlln exchange also continued steady. There are etl several million. ! of the Pacific bonds which ma lure January 1 and which are now available fo redemption under the government's offer , but : fs dltllcult to intimate how far the owners o these bonds wilt avail themselves cf the govern ment's offer. The firmness of tlmemoney for the shorter periods , the rate being 3Jj per cent from thirty to ninety days. Indicates a belief that the rates may continue stiff after the first of the year. The demand for money In Rsrllii nnd Ltm- don has Its effect In keeping up the vxchsnge fate and tt Is believed to be not Improbable that the Dank of England will not advance Its min imum rate thi week. There Ji perfect confidence f-lt , however , that this would not avail to pre vent a movement of gold In this direction If any real stringency was threatened at this center. At the pame time the demand was of such meager pro portions that comparatively few cattle were wanted and. the market "ntis as dull and unsatisfactory as at any time In the last week or two. Such cattle as Just happened to please the buyers sold very nearly as well as yester day , but as a general thing the market was weak and lower. In addition to being slow and draggy. Still they were all sold before the close. Whether buyers will bo able to keep cattle tlo values down depends very much upon the action of shippers. If th country holds back the cattle and tne markets of the country are given only a moderate sup ply It may prove no easy matter to keep the market down. On the other hand. If the country gets panicky there can be no doubt but -what feeders will be heavy losers. Packers iwanted a few cows and heifers and the market on such a pleased them was fully steady. While the market was not overly active , the offerings of the stuff were mostly all taken In good season. Stockers and feeders sold at just about steady prices. Representative sales : NATIVES.
