NEW YOHK. Dec. 21. Uuslness In securities
was'for the most part Intensely dull today and
prices sagged from Inaction. The incut notable
movement In the railroad list was In Northern
Pacific preferred , which fell awny a point enlarge
largo realizing sales Induced by the payment of
the dividend of 1 per cent , which wait taken off
the price today. Quotations Irom Ixmdon and
from the German bourses , where this stock Is a
speculative ravotlte , showed that the realizing
movement was In force t.lere nlo , and there were
salm of the stock In this market. The statement
of earnlnss for the second week In December
also ciKOuragtd the sellers with Its Increase of
less than J10.WO over the corretpondlnp week In
last year , us compared with the Increase of over
JluO.tw In other recent weeks. The ttock rallied
a traction before the close. The failure of the
directors of the New York Central to mcretue
the dividend above the quarterly rate of 1 per
cent caused disappointment to Holders of tiiat
stock. T.ie statement for the last quarter was
also considered disappointing , the gross earn
ings Eti-AvlnR only a slight increase over lust
ye. r and fallinc over IGOO.WO below tlic.uo for the
corresponding period in UJ. ! London was a mod-
eralo selle ? In this market of all the International
stocks. The coalers showed a tendency to react
today on traders realizing , nnd New Jersey Cen
tral was at one time ifci per cent below laft
nlKht'tt clase. but it rallied 2 points nnd Its llnal
price was only fractionally below yfste aayU
erratic manner , but were weak. Metropolitan
Street Hallway , on the other hand , was btrong
on talk of a compromise agreement with Its
pilnclpal competitor. The declaration of a semi
annual dividend on the first preferred stack of
2 per cent on St. Joseph At Cirand Island aroused
a demand for other securities of that company.
The tone of the money market continued unset
tled today. Loans were rejxirted during- the day
as high 4 per cent , but at the close of Hie
market they were marked down to 1 per cent ,
and un actual transaction was reported at that
llgurc. This sudden weakening uf call money
had no Innuonce In the prices of stocks , w/ilcli /
were weak and de-cllning at the close , bterl ne
exchange also responded to the stillness In tne
money market with a declineof ii per cent In
fie actual rate for demand bills and V , per cent
In London on flxty day bills. There was a
ulgnlilcant falling In the price of government
bonds the new 4s end the 5s falling per cent
in the bid price. The market was exceeding ; ! '
narrow throughout the day ami many usually
acllve stocks did not move at alK .The bond
market showed a large , falling off In act uty
and prices. A majority of the r'tle9 ' dealt In
snowed losses. Total sales , J1.1M.WJ.

CATTLE Yesterday the cattle market
was slow and weak and the reason given
was that the receipts were so light. Today
the market was better and the reason given
was the same us yesterday.
Whatever Improvement there may have
been was conllned to the steer trade , nnd
there was not enough to bra. ? about , or to
encourage shipments. j\.i the fame time
buyers wcro pointing out cattle that sold
better than the worst time last week.
One thing which was against an advance
was the lact that the quality of the offer
ings was very much on the commonlsh
order.
According to the ideas of sellers t'ho cow-
market was no good. About half of the re
ceipts consisted of cow stuff , whllo the de
mand was of very ordinary proportions.
As to values , the best kinds sold about the
same as yesterday , while everything else
was very slow and weak. One bunch of
fed western cows sold oc higher than some
of the same lot brought last week.
It looks very much as if the demand for
killing cattle was liable to bo of a very In
different character , and if there is to be any
improvement in values , receipts at all mar
ket points will have to be kept down.
A few cattle sold today tor feeders at
