Jobbers hnvc found the weather
very favorable for the distribution ofvln
ter good * of nil description * , and without
exception nro reporting the trade of the last
( week as highly satisfactory. The cxce.islve
cold "ivcnthcr has started up heavy buying
on the part of consumers In the country ,
which has bten followed by hurry-up orders
from retail mcrchantn. AH a rule the de
mand for staple lines of merchandise at this
eonson of the year , when the approaching
liollday dwarfs everything else. Is light , but
* hls year has proven an exception. Mosl
fill local jobbing houses have been forced
to work two or thrtc nights Iri the week to
keep up with orders.
While the demand for staple lines of mer
chandise has been unpreecdcntcdly large , It
lias In nowise Interfered with the move-
orient of holiday goods. All kinds of fancy
Roods * that could bo made to serve as holiday
gifts hnvc been In active demand and the
nales this year have been as large , or
larger , than for any previous season , show-
Ing1 that the people In tributary tcrrltorj
have money to spend and arc willing to par
wits somn of It , at least.
Among the retailers of the city the name
acpountH are heard on every hand , business
men having only good reports to give on
concerning the character of trade. Monej
Is moro plentiful In Omaha owing to the
greater number of people employed , and 1
lias been it long time since the downtowi
Btorca have been FO thronged with shopper
ns during the last week. Kverythlngwoulc

ever experienced by the trade of this city
The clearlnBS of local banks show Ian ?

tent , at least , bean out the statement made
fibova nn to the -moat excellent character of
the week's ) bmlncfH. Omaha continues , ns
usual , to lead nil the large cities In the per
centage of Increase over last year.
ONLY ONE COM PLAINT.
The only unfortunate circumstance within
the whole circle ni the week's business ex
periences was the heavy break In cattle
values. The packers nnd other buyers huve
without doubt regarded the prevailing prices
tit which beef cattle have been selling as
too high In comparison with the extent of
the demand for product and the number or
cattle In t'.je country with i.vhlch to supply
thatj demand. All the efforts of buyers for
Home time past have been put forth with
the very evident determination of breaking
the market. They had already met with a
very fair mcnsuro of success , values having
dropped considerably from the extreme high
point , but the last i.veck the bear methods
of buyers were crowned with more than the
full measure of EUCCPH" . the decline on an
average amounting to 2.1 cents per hundred
on all kinds , but even moro on some grades.
This hni carried the market to iv point
where feeders are losing plenty of money
find loud complaints may be looked for from
Iho country. A good many cattle were sold
itho last week at prlcea that netted the own
ers little , or no more , than the tlrst cost ,
the corn fed , together i.vlth the labor and
cost of feeding , being a total loss.
Should the market remain long at the
present point the losses In the country
could hnrdly hop ! but be very large and
general business would most likely feel the
effects most keenly. Ttho great majority ot
the cattle fed In this state were bought dur
ing the late summer or early full at hlsh
prices nnd on borrowed money , so that It
they do not soil at a protlt the farmer who
feeds receives nothing' for his corn crop.
While Nebraska feeders arc feeling some
what blue just now tihe stockmen of the
western states are generally quite happy.
A prominent stockman from Utah the other
day explained the situation In his state a
follows : "The cnttlo men In our state have
made lots of money. We nil had plenty ot
cattle on the rejiiscs and when prices com
menced to go up and grew stlffer and
Btlffer wo loaded our cattle onto the cars
nnd sent them to Omnha and Kansas City.
'Hhe prices went up much higher than they
liait gone for years. Wo realized that a re-
ootlou would come some day and that when
it did we could stock up again at lower
prices. It would be safe to say that fully
one-third of all the cattle In the state was
disposed of and possibly more. "
The same was true of the other range cat
tle states , ns Colorado , Wyoming and Mon
tana. The cattle men of those states wore
sellers at the hlgih time , while the farmers
of the corn states -were buyers. All last
Bummer and fall the farmers with large
crops of corn In view bought largely and
eecmlngly without regard to prices. What
the outcome will bo no ono Is wlso enough
to say , but ono thing1 Is certain that the
corn growers will bo heavy losers * unless
the market recovers some of tlie decline ot
thn InHt few weeks.
JOnnEHS AND MANUFACTURERS.
Branch & Co. report a shipment of straw
berries , on the way from Los Angclef1 , to be
hero the first of this week. The berries
Imvo been unusually good this year and
tor that reason have been moro popular
. with buyers.
A considerable break Is noted in California
oranges. The sales on the coast for the
holiday trade were- quite large , but after
It became too late for shipments to bo
roado to eastern markets In time for the
holidays , holders on the coast weakened and
the market broke about 60 cents per box.
S. G. Lund of this city , who was recently
on an extended trip through the south ,
visited the largo Cuban clpnr factories near
To.mpn , Fla. , where hundreds of men nnd
women arc employed. One feature that
Struck ihlm as entirely novel wa the custom
of the Cuban cigar makers In employing a
reader. This personage occupies an elevated
seat In the rooms where u large number or
peopla nro worklrtp and reads to them. It
Is his regular business to go through the
dally papers at hand nnd fhcn put in the
balance of the day reading from some book.
In this way the monotonous labor of rolling
clsai's all day Is somewhat relieved.
Down In the produce district there Is some
Inclination to umllo at the great scheme
propased by the Commercial club of sur
rounding ; Omaha with n chain of gardens
and hot houses. Some of tJie gardeners , who
cold their vegetables last summer nnd fall
at prices that would only pay for their time
while IwiulInK them to mnricut , to any nothing
ingof their time nncl the tlmo of the women
and children In Browing- them , might be
willing to sell out their truck patches to the
Commerlal club. Ono wholesale produce
mnn snld thnt there wns no reason why
Hint house vept'tnblett could not be crown In
Omaha ns well as In other cities , except thnt
* ho demand for such VPKCtuhles Is too
limited. The pt oplc of Omnha do not con-
tuimo enough winter vegetables to keep one
liouso running. Besides that Omaha Is u
very poor mnrket for anything : In the line
of uiuuuletn tl-al IH very oxpennlve. T.io !

the souliern stalest cheaper than they could
lie grown In local hot lioutieH.

eighteen people to work and as soon ns the
potting of the new machines Is completed
there will bu room for moro. In thU branch

various Btylei * . ranging- the 'way from a

CHICAGO. Dec. 19. Wheat was very dull
but firm today. Strong outside nnd foreign
markets and anticipations of less bearish
statistics Monday , caused some covering by
shorts , resulting In ? 46:4c : advance In May.
Other markets also leaned decidedly toward
the bull side , corn and oats advancing about
Vic each , and provisions closingaHtlU
higher.
Wheat opened very tame , but quite firm
at about Uc higher than It closed the day
before , May 91c. It sold a few moments
later at 92c , nnd for some time held at
91&Q92C. The Liverpool market , which yes
terday refused to be governed by Thurs
day's advance , was equally Indifferent to
yesterday's decline In this market. The
Paris market was a shade higher than It
closed the day before. Some other Items
of early news were also helpful to the firm
ness the market showed at the opening , and
for the greater part of the session.
The week's clearances of wheat nnd flour ,
as reported by llrndstrcel's , were consider
ably smaller than they have been running
for a long time back. The amount of clear

against 6,266,000 bu. a week nfo , and G,222MA )

Chicago received 223 cars , against 35 last
year on the similar day. It was reported
from Minneapolis that 140 cars of their re
ceipts today wuro Armour & Co.'s wheat , en
route from the northwest to Chicago.

bu. , and expects n decrease In the quantity
In ocean passage. Minneapolis announced
Its estimate to Us Block of wheat for the
week from 1,000,000 bu. Increase as reported

crease. In addition to wheat delivered yes
terday afternoon for December contracts ,
1,250.000 bu. were delivcied out by Armour
& Co. and paid for by Allen , Grler ft Heller.
It had already been taken for granted , how
ever , . by the trade , that all the wheat sold
to French Lelter would bo taken care of ,
and that they have for some time had the
money In bank ready to pay on demand.
Outside markets nil showed strenpKi. The
day's clearances of wheat nnd Hour were
swelled to a total of G0,000 ! bu. by the ad
ditional Information that New Orleans
shipped 205,000 bu. ot wheat and 22,000 bar
rels of Hour , nnd Galveston DO.COO bu , ot
wheat. The market became much llrmer In
tone near the close , and made Its best prices
for the day then. Shorts covered quite
freely and as offerings were moderate ,
prices moved up easily. May finally rose tel
l -iQ92 c , and was bringing & 2'fcc ns line
session ended. December was dealt In very
sparingly. It closed nt S9c , or He lower
than It did yesterday.
Corn was dull , off a shade early on mod
erate selling , but became strong and ad
vanced when wheat did. Country olferlngs
were reported , freer on advanced bids from
Chicago last night. May ranged from 29 %
fi'29Vlc to 28T&C , and closed 'ifi'/ic higher at
.
With the exception of about fifteen min
utes' activity toward t'he ' close , trading In
oats was very dull. Scalpers and others
sold short early , but covered when wheat
advanced , and the market closed strong.
Elevator Interests also bought. May ranged
from 22c to c , closln ® Ue higher at
22'dc
Trading In provisions was fairly active
around the opening. Small hog receipts nnd
the presence of tome outside buying orders
caused an early advance. Subsequently
trade was very llglit and almost wholly
local but prices were well maintained. At
the close May pork , was 5(0'74c ( ! higher at
cars : corn , 250 cars ; oats , 350 cars ; hogs ,
40.000 head.

MTUcli strefs has been laid upon the govern
ment's announcement that It would begin the
redemption of the currency Cs , which mature on
January 1 , on December 24 , as a promising off
set to the withdrawals frcrrt the money market
on account of Union Pacific payments , it Is ,
however , pointed out that ai conshltrKb.e portion
of these currency Cs arc now In the treasury as
a banls for circulation and a security for gov
ernment deposits In banks. It is not likely that
these would be offered for redemption before
maturity , and If they were t'.iey would not re
lieve the situation. There has been In addition
nn outflow of currency from New York to the
south hi thu last three weeks , which lo unusual
at this time ofi the year nnd which promises to
accentuate the temporary scarcity of money here.
The bankers express some Fkeptlcism regarding
the gold engagement. In view of the ptlces of

to the leaving In England nnd Gernviny nt In

this country. Under the Influence of the higher
rate for money exchange rates have declined
during Ihe week and there liait been a cessation
of demand for long fterllng. That there arc

of thn strongest factors In the money situation.

CATTLE Therowere
-were only twenty-seven
loads of eattlo here today , about the same
number at Kansas City nnd u few less at
Chicago , but there was n great plenty for
the market. It would huvo been Just ns
well for the selling- Interests If there had
been none at all. The prices paid Were
about the same ns prevailed on yesterday's
market , and. the day's trading wnd without
any special feature worthy of note.
The vast week was ono to be remembered
with very llttlo pleasure by the sellers of
cattle , as It was characterized by the con
tinued nnd successful assaults ot packers
on values , resulting In heavy losses to ship
pers and feeders. At this pcnson of thu
year , i.vhen all Interests are looking forward
to the holiday trade , which requires the
best of everything , It very often happens
that immature or rough cattle arc neg
lected , and. consequently , suffer a decline
In prices. This season not only have the
common and medium kinds experienced a
severe break , but the choicest have fol
lowed the downward track as 'well. '
Ask twenty men t the yards how much
lower the market was for the week , nnd the
reply of eighteen would be a. quarter , that
being about the average for all clarses of
cattle. To go more Into detail It would
be f afo lo Fay that the choicest beeves , both
steers and heifers , whl < ii would meet the re
quirements of the Christmas trade , were
not In all cases , perhaps , that much lower ,
as they .were Irt pretty falri demand all the
week. On the other hand , common nnd
medium cattle , many of them cattle that
would bo cona'dered pretty fair stuff , some
seasons , wcro anywhere from 25240a lower ,
nnd extremely slow Ea'.o on most days at
that.
Feeders and stock cattle followed beeves
downward , no exception to the general
break In values being made In their case.
In fact , at this season there Is , as a rule ,
comparatively little doing In the feeder mar
ket , and only a-few cattle of that description
were handled the past week. Representa
