( Autbir of tlie Itnipy-CJ'- ' Papfrs. itc : ) To begin with , the hoys of Hemlock Hills ivcro decidedly prejudiced ngolnst Kplrralm JoRRlns. Why this was so was n mystery. If they had been asked what reasons they had for this foellnR probably not one of them could have furnished a eatlsfactory rcoly. All the hoys know was that they didn't like' ' JogRlnii. None of them knew exactly why. JcRRlus lad nc\er treated cny of them badly. Ho Jiad always attended to his o n affairs and let thorn attend to tuelis , jot there remained that Indefinable but unmistakable feeling of dislike toward him. Porticos It was because Jogging was a new element In the .community and had not yet become assimilated with the rest of the Ingredients which > wpnt to make'up the society of Hemlock Hills. Ho had moved Into the neighborhood onlj six montha be- fcro our story opens , buying a farm which vcs all run down and with fences and buildIngs - Ings out of repair , and had kept steadily nt work , tlliliiK the soil , making needed 1m- pro\cments and slowly hut surely bringing Ills purchase ut > to the standard of the sur rounding prosperous homesteads. For tha ! ho depended wholly upon the exertions of himself and a willing and able- bodied assistant whom lie had brought with lilm when ho came to Hemlock Hills , which fact. straiiEC as It may seem , did not serve to Increase his ociiuMrlty with the boys , even If It t'ld with the elders. H was th : custom In the neighborhood , wlicni'rcr ' a farmer's work got behindhand or he had uomo unusually hard Job on his hands , to make a "bee , " Inviting nil the neighbors In for halt a day or n day to assist him out of the dliaculty. llut Jogglus man- nRtd to keep the upper hand ot his work , handicapped ns he was by a place all out of roj .tlr. nnd Instead of having two or. three "bees" during the season , as was the cus tom at hla shlftU'ts preJccessor. ho gavf none , consequently the larger boys ctho i c'ghborhood1o regarded a "boj" 03 first cousin to a picnic , felt that , they wore being cheated out of their rights. And when fall came , and Jogglns got In his abundant crop of corn , and husked It out and stond H away In tha crib without giving thu usual husking be" well , that was u little too much , and the feeling of hostility toward the new comer rapidly develop'-d. Hero , at last , was something tangible to base their prejudices on , and from thinking mean things about Jogglns the boys soon got to talking them. ' "Tell you what , boys , " /said / Will Per kins one day when the/ were discussing the mutter , "I know right from the start that Mr. Jogglns would turn out to bo that kind of a man. When Mr. Doollttlo lived on that plicc lu always used to got up the liveliest husking bee ot the whole neighbor hood. Catch him husking any of his own corn ; no , slrco ; ho lot tha boys have a chance- It every time ; nnd ho wasn't afraid to trot out the plo and cake and sweet elder , cither. A fellow could always depend on Retting all the pumpkin plo he could cat , nt Doollttlo's husking bccvi. Mrs , Doollttlo was great on pumpkin pie , nnd Mrs. Jogglns may be , too , for nil I know , Uut'lf she Is'yotl' ' can wager that -Mr. Jogglns will BOO to It that no ono except himself and Mrs. Jogglns nnd the. hired man over get any of It to cat. "Speaking of the hired man , It didn't look lust right Tar Mr. Jogglns to bring Jim along with him when he came when he could Juwt as well have Hired , same Otic living -around here. ; lib Is a Rood Worker and stl.'Us right to bunlncBS. I'll admit tha , but It Wn't exactly the thing fetching stranger Into the oMco to do work that lots ot people here-\vould be glad to get. " "ThdVs so , " spoke up Hank Barlow , "but I don't care so much about the hired man part o'f It as I do about Mr. Jogglnu not glvlag a husking bee. I haven't liked him very well any of the time ; ho nets to me as If ho had como hero from another planet and .felt rather above the people on this ono ; and when a man carries his exclusiveness - ness so far as lo husk his own corn , Instead of giving a husking bee , I think It Is about time something was done about It. " "Thai IP my Idea , exactly , " chimed In Carl Bunker. "But the question Is , what can WP do In the matter ? Wonder how It would work to "out ' ! piece about It In the piper and icark It and send It to Mr. Jogglns ? " "Take too long to do that , and the editor might not print It , anyhow. " Internoscd Hank Barlow. "Might better write what we want to say , In a disguised hand on a sheet o' ' Taper , and put a skull and erossbones on U and tack It onto his front dnor. " "That would bo too much like 'the ' whlte- capa wo used to hear so much about , " ob jected Will Perkins , "and If wo begin any thing ofthat kind wo will have the whole neighborhood down on us. No , lioys , I'll loll you a better plan than that. I've Juat thought of some-thing 'that ' will do first- rate : Wo'll compel Mr. Jogglns to make a bee , ' " "But bow can wo do that ? " asked 'Carl Bunker. "Easy enough , " replied Will Perkins. "If you fellows will como along with me tonlgM I'll show you how. Let's sec ; < hero are two. four , six , eight , ten , twelve exactly a dozen ot us hero , ami that will bo just enough to do the job up In good chapo. And now all who want to be counted In on the adven ture will please ralso their right hands. " Every hand went up. 'Ull right ; Wat settles it ; the job Is as KOtxJ as done. Wear your working clothes ' and meet me under the big elm this side oJ Air. Jogglns' house at 0 o'clock tonight. II. The boys soon separated and at 0 p. m. that .night , punctual to agreement , they me { In the shadow ot the big elm. "Well , " remarked Will Perkins , as he looked over the crowd , "I'm glad to see tha none ct you backed out , nnd now wo will proceed to business. Wo'vo got a big job oneid of us and when wo get It completed I rather think 'Mr. Jogglns will have to call In tils neighbors and make a 'beo1 of It to get things back where 'they belong. In the first place , I propose "taking apart the buckboard - board wagon that ho keeps standing unJer the shed back ot the birn nnd carrying It upon the root of tic barn and putting It to gether and leaving It up there , with the wucels standing astraddle of the ridgepole. GUESS It'll puzzle him nnd the hired man some to got It down when they discover It , not to mention a few other little chores of that kind that we'll fix up for them be-fore we got through. "But , como on ; wo'll clovato the buckboard first , and when wo'ro through with that I'll tell you about the rest. And remember no talking above a whisper while we're nt 'work ! " In alienee the boys followed their leader nnd In a very few minutes they had the cuckboard apart and wcro convoying It r by piecemeal to the roof of the barn. Young Perkins had provided himself with n monkey wrench , eo getting the wagon apart was simple enough , but the rest was not BO easy. But by the aid of two ladders , ono of which reached from the ground to the eaves of the barn , nnd the other , which had a hook at the top to hold It fast , from the caves to the Tldgo board , and a strong ropo. no that some of the crowd could go ahead and pull whIU others pushed behind , they soon accomplished their purpose. They had Just got the buckboard nicely rut together and anchored tutrldo of thu highest part of the roof , when an unwelcome sound arrested their attention and sent a sudden chill over their spirits. Some ono on horseback wan turning Into the lane that led to Jogging' barn ! It must bo either Mr. Jogging or tbo hired man , though the boys supposed tbey were both In bed and asleep long before this time. Crouching down on the roof , out of sight EB far a * possible , and ncarcely daring to breathe , the boys anxlouily awaited develop- in en In. It wa a decidedly thrilling moment , end when they heard Jo2gln ' volco saying "Hello ! What's that ladder doing there ? Thought I left It under the shed , " they would have cbeerlully given all their Jackknlvcs and other valuables to have been safely out ot the ucrspo. llut If Joifglni had discovered them , or uipectcd th purpose tor .which the ladder had been placed there , h6 made no sign. Putting his hnrao Into the stable , ho fas tened the door , then removing the ladder , ho carried It back under the shed whcro the boys had found It , nnd went on to the house , whistling softly to himself , ( "Well , now , we are In a mice fix , " uttered Will Perkins dolefully , as the door closed behind Jogglns. " "This other ladder won't reach hair-way to the ground , even It wo. : outt ) spare It from whcro It Is. Jogglns Bas got us treed , and when ho comes out In the morning and discovers us hero ho will probably send for the constable and have us all locked up. " "Wouldn't blame him n bit If ho did , " said Carl iBunkcr. ' 'But we mustn't stay hero to be dlscbvcrod. 'Where Is.tho rope wo had Just now hauling up the wagon ? Won't that reach to the ground , or far enough so we can drop the rest of the way without breaking our legs or our .necks ? " "It might. It wo only had It here , " groanci ) Will Perkins ; ' 'but I throw It down to the ground after wo got this confounded buckboard - board up hero. Say , boys ; no use talking ; I can't stand It up hero till daylight ; I'm going to jell for Mr. Jogglns to como out and let us down. " "Yes , and get us all arrested ! " uttered Carl , reproachfully. "Well. If wo nro going to bo arrested wo might as well 'bo arrested now aa In the morning. I'd feel enough eight tnoro com- fortablu End safer In the lockup than roce- Icg up hero on the peak of this barn all night. I'm chilled through now. So hero ono of those good-n ttircil , motherly souls that no ono ( especially A boy ) can nelp liking , and she RAVO the lads such a cordial wl- como that they were soon , a.1 their case , chat ' ting with all hands as If they were old friend * and lowering the contents of. her well-stocked larder after a most alarming fashion. "Say , boys this Is as god as a busking ! " announced llnnk Tlarlow , after surrounding fcls third piece of mince pie. "Husking , oh ? " spoke up Jogging. ' 'That rcmlnta mo ; Jim used to go to All the huskIng - Ing bees , nnd lin said wo ought to have ono , same AS the rest of the''neighbors , and If mother hadn't received some bad news Just then wo Intended lo do It. I5he Rat word that her sister , who was a missionary In China , had been killed , and It upset her so for a spell that she didn't want to do any thing or sec any ere but her own folks , so wu had to give up the Kvn'ot having a-husk- Ing , and Jim nnd I went towork , and husked the corn out ourselves. "But mother Is feeling more like herself now , sowe've been talking of having a house warming some night next week / / ' ! Inviting all the neighbors , bpys , girls nnd all , to have a good tlnlo nnd 'ton 'of -acquainted all around. Ought to have attended to the matter long before this ) but we found so much to do when wo moved here , an.l .tho work has been crowding us so all the ium- mcr-and fall , that we really haven't had .time to bo more than half-way civil to people. But now the worst of the rush Is over , nnd mother and I are going to try to bo a llttlo mote sociable. We haven't given It out yet , but our house warming Is to be next Thurs day night , and we want you boys to all be sure and come. "Now , you won't forget It. will you ? Wo shall expect you without fall , and you must bring all your friends , too , " urged Mr. Jog- gins , as the boys rose to go. "No , wo won't forget , " replied Will Per kins , speaking for the crowd ; "but but I want to tell you before we go ithat we we put that wagon up there outsclves , Just to be mean , nnd If you don't want to have us at your house warming It will servo us Just right. " * WKLL , WELL , BOYS , IT WAS HEAL GOOD OF YOU TO COME UP HERE TO GET THAT WAGON DOWN FOR MB , - - goea. no matter what happens. HI , there , \tr. Jogglns ! Halloo ! help ! halloo ! " Mr. Jogglns' promptness" in responding to this appeal looked nomowhat suspicious , al most cs though he had been s'tandlng with in car to the keyhole listening for It. "Well , what's wanted ? ' he demanded , ticking his head out of the door as the fnal shout dledi away. "We're up on the roof of the tarn , a 'ot of us boys , and want to get Jbwn , " explained Will Perkins In tones that were far from mirthful. "Sho ! you don't eay ? " ejaculated Jogglns ; and then , without another word he tramped out to the burn , took the ladder from under the shed , placed it aga'nat the side of the barn whcro ho had found it when he came home ; then climbing carefully to the top he poked hlb head up over the roof , and lazing In apparent surprise upon the scene before him , remarked : "Well , well , boys , It was real good of you o come up hero to get that wagon down for no , and I'm much obliged to',7ou , I'm sure ! frumps must have carried It up there , I reckon and then , when you boys discovered 't and went up to bring It down and put It back where It belongs , .1 came blundering llong and took the ladder away , and left you all penned up there Ike a lot of valors cast iway on a desert Icland. Just like me ; I'm always doing something of that kind. "But seeing you boys are bound to take hat .buckboard down to the ground for me , I a'po o I ought to mention that the easiest way to handle It Is to lake It apart. I'll go down nnd get the wrench , and O , you've jot one already , ( have you ? Well , now , that was real thoughtful of > vni , too , to go clear homo after a wrench when you saw the fix the wagon waa In. And now. If you will lust take off the wheels and the thills and pass them along we'll have that buckboard 'lown on the ground where It belongs In a Jiffy. " The boys wore somewhat undecided whether these remarks were Intended for 'rony or In earnest , but upon ono point there wasn't the slightest room for doubt , and 'hat 'was ' that Mr. Jogglns was treating them much ibettcr than they deserved to be treated ; amj they aet to work like beavers , ind In halt an hour the wagon was standing lit Its accustomed place under the shed , ap parently none the worse for Its adventure. III. "There , boys , you've done first-class , " eaia Togglns , approvingly , when the task was completed , "J never could have got that huekboard down Inthe world without your help , and I want to make it right with you In some way. Mother has Just baked up t. ilco ibatch of mlnco plra , and I 'liellove ' there ire one or two squash pies and some cake In the pantry , too , so you must all como to the house with mo , and I'll rouro up mother and Jim and we'll have a llttlo sort of an Im promptu picnic and get better acquainted with each othcr- "Como right along , boys , every ono of you , we'll need all hands on the pie busi ness , aamo as wo did In getting down the wagon. " The boys wcro glad It was ao dark that Mr. Jcgglns could not read their thoughts it that moment ; and If IIhad been even a lit tle darker so they could have got away with out being .observed ) they -would have liked It better yet. They began nuking excuses , but Jogging broke In wltln "No tlmo to listen to excuses now. boys ; como ahead and get something to eat drat , and wci'll.-he < ir..lhe.excuses , afterward If you have any to offer. " There didn't arp ar < to be anything else to uo. so the lads , with emotions that can he better Imagined than dwcrlbed , followed Mr. JoKKlns to the house , where ho ushered them Into the big cheery Bitting room , and then went tp call un Mrs , Jpggjna and Jim the ilrcd man , " as the boys generally called Him , though he wes nut .much older than some of them and Introduced them to the unexpected eonxany. Well , It's clown again all safe , and If you keep the mat ter to yourselves nobody'llsver bo any the wiser that Is. unless you stay away from our house warming , ahdThen I suppose I'll have to tell. " . . . * . It is ! iardly necessary to add that the boys did not stay awajfromtho house warming. They 'were there , the whole dozen of them , and a merry , sociable " > tlnro they had to gether. And at , midnight , , when the party broke up , It was the'unanimous verdict of the Jolly participants that the houss warming had been a grand success , nnd that for gen uine , old-fashlonoS hospitality , there was , after all , ao place like Jogglns' .
