CHICAGO , Dec. 11. Wheat iwns qtllot to

The speculative trade In wheat was
but the feeling continued nervous. The
clique was thought to have picked up most
of the offerings , possibly enough to replace
the amount sold yesterday , at much higher
prices , to check the feverish advances which
had been started on the octlon of the
shorts. 13ut while December sold higher ,
the more distant futures wcro lower ,
selling at one tlmo He beJcUi the dose last
night and January nearly 2c off , but both
recovered some. The heavy movement ot
wheat which Is under way for this market
tended to relieve , to porno extent , the nr > -
prehen ° Ion of the shorts nnd there was less
urgency In the demand from thnt Interest ,
It was currently reported that wheat was
coming In good volume * from 'Minneapolis '
anil that COO.OOO bu. of Duluth No. 1 north
ern on the way to Buffalo had been stopped
by telegraphic orders nnd turned back to
Chicago , where the price would net the
owners 5o per bu. profit , It Is known thnt

only waiting for the price here to roach a
figure which will warrant putting It on the
cars for Chicago nnd Mie bears hope to see
It como In such , a Hood ns to seriously em
barrass the clique to take care of H. It was
felt that such would b ? the cape , which en
couraged the short selling. Joe Loiter Is
credited with the statement that howeve
much wheat the clique , might get , It woul
all bo promptly chipped , but the bears
looked upon tills ns a bluff.
In Dece-mher very llttlo w.is done , but any

Ilected the tendency of profcualonnl ttadcrs to
close up contracts nt the end of the week , rather
than keep them open over Sunday , and nlfo a
luutuiat reaction toward a higher level after yes
terday's relapse In prices. There wan some bear
pritsuro ngaln t prices nt the opening , Manhattan
being driven down 1 4 and Sugar yielding a point
nfter a small gain , Hut this lend failed to In

yiwterdny's liquidation linil run Its course for the
present. The bull contingent wns prepared to
ofleir vigorous support to weak spots nnd Inrce
buying1 orders for their account turned the tide.
Sugar wna the center of the nuuket's strength
and the firm reslstnnee of prices drove the bears
to cover.
There wns n notlcRible sluggishness of price
movement In pome of the most prominent stocks
In the market on the rlso. ' Sugar wna quite
buoyant and mse to within ntiout 3 points ot the
highest of tlio week , closing with a net gain of
IK. Its range for the ilay was ,1 points. Man

The Flight recessions from tltlK'st ) of the close

The large shrinkage In the surplus Is due nlcno
not to the raising of the legul < 4-esorvc limit by
the heavy Increase In deposits , mil nn actual In

the Union Pacific unlo. Tlioro has l > een a move
ment of currency to Bt , Ix > uls and New Orltnns
during the week , which probably accounts for the
decrease In cash.
The prlea of Ihe United Stales new 4s was bid
up K nnd the old 4s registered ' .d.
The week's gains have been reduced , ns wns
the case last week , by1 the profit' ' taking of pro
fessional operators on Friday. The manipula
tion of the market by the largfc Interest > rhlch
has embarked on a bull- campaign was very
obvious duilng the week , and strenuous efforts
were made to keep the course of prlt-e * upward
by vlgorouo support nt weak points and fay In-
clUnc sharp rises In ( Individual stocks to KUS-
laln the general list. Some .of the report * set
afloat to effect this later purpose conlrndliSted
themselves In the csurse of the week , and noth
ing could then prevent a decline In the Price
of the particular stock , with a consequent un-
tellllng- effect on the market.
Thuo Sugar wan pushed up to 1451J on re
ports thnt an extra dividend on the clock wan
certainly forthcoming , nnd the declaration of
only the regular dividend drove the price down
below 140.
All of the local traction companies' stocks
wee : rushed up on reports that the underground
rapid' trantlt plan was to be declared against
by the court , accompanied by the assertion ?
that a failure to approve the plan this week
would be equal to disapproval , since It would
not leave time to put the plan Inlo operation.
ThMe ntc-cks came down on Krldny and helped
to break the market. Northern Pacific prcfoired
was forced down li on reports thai uclloa on
th dividend would be postponed.
Tlicso declines uncovered Btop-Iosa orders all
Ihrpugh the list , and broke the market and
served materially to reduce the net gains on
th'i week. Union , Pnclllc was persistently weaken
on account of the ptesldent's order that the
government should qualify rus a bidder at t.io
Kanfas Pacific sale , and the subsciiuent re
quest for a postponement of the sale.
The week's returns of icllroad earnlnss have
made a rcmaiketlily favorable FhowInK. the No
vember fctatement of New. York Central being
a notable exception. Roads In the Houth anil
southwest have shown cupeclally heavy In-
cicuecs , and their stocks have shown the
largest gains In price.
Money has continued cheap nnd easily ob
tainable , and there have been offerings of Chicago
cage money on time loans In this market. Not
withstanding the case of local money rates , and
In splto of a clmrp stiffening of discount rates
In 'London and Berlin , the foreign excSanire
market has flown Increasing weakness. Actual
rates for sterling exchange have fallen Uc
during the week , dueto the offerings of bills
against grain and' cotton , and to nn abatement
of the Investment demand for long sterling.
Chicago ci edits arc reported to be loaned In
Berlin at 4 % to the extent of several million
dollars.
Abundance of grain bills , which has served to
weaken c-xcliungc , is said to be due to the opera
tions of the bull clique In pushing exports of
wheat.
The strength nnd activity of the bond market
during the week has been even nioro remarkable
than In tlie- stock market. High grnde toncta hnve
been thoroughly gone over onrt lifted almost to
prohibitive prlc < s , the government bonds rising
with the others. The demand has shifted to
middle grade bands , which have shown material
advances.
Hpiculatlve Issues hnve ro | > veil In sympathy
with stocks , hut are 1 lilgher on the week. United
States new 4s have been bid up during the week

The- Evening Post's London flnnnc'al cablegram
says : The stock markets here were r' vidy , with a
rather littler tone. It has been nn Iclpaled tl nt IIe

CATTLE Only twenty-nine loads of cnt-
tlo were reported In the yards today , and
of that number ten loads were not offered
for sale , so that there were hardly enough
cattle In the yards to mnUe a. market. A
portion of the cattle held off of the mar
ket were from Mississippi and Arkansas
and were on their way into thu country
to bo pluccei on feed.
With so few cattle here thcro Is not
much to bo said of the market , as the
trade was without any importance.
The prices pild were probably about
steady on all kinds.
The downward movement In cattle
values which commenced the week before
continued during the tlrst half of the
past week. Tno country seemed to get
panic stricken and shippers rushed for
ward their half-fat ami Immature cattle ,
which Hooded the markets at all selling
points nnd contributed more to the gen
eral demoralization of values. Hy Wednes
day the force of the downward movement
BEOined to ImVc- expended Itself , tempo
rarily at least , nnd on Thursday thuro
WUH a slip lit reaction , so that the week
closed with values a little above the ex
treme low point. In a general way values
for the week were about 2Bc lower.
Beef steers were In pretty fair request
all the week In spite of the fact that the
market wns both slow and lower and as a
general thins unsatisfactory. The half fat
cattle especially were very slow and they
were much neglected on some days. Prime
cattle did not sell off very much , some
fancy Christmas cuttle Helling at $ .1.00 , the
best price paid this aeason , but the gen
eral run ot cattle was anywhere from
2540c lo'wcr than they wcro nt the high
time. A week or ten days ng-o very few
cattle were selling- under S4.CO , but a con-
plderahle proportion of the receipts Bolei
during the last half of the week fit ftTlift
4.00. showing in degree the extent of the
decline '
Cow 'stuff suffered In about the same
proportion as fat cattle and the market
at the close of the week was onywhuro
from lljc lower on the most desirable kinds
to 30540c lower on common canners , as
compared with the high time.
The stockcr and feeder trade wan rather
quiet all the wce-k. On most days the
offerhiKs were llfht and not many wanted.
The market gradually worked lower In
sympathy with the break In fat cattle , the
decline amounting to about 25e. Hcpre-
