NEW YORK. Dec. 10 Today * stock market
was a renewal of th oonleit between the re
actionists and the combined Interests which have
emtarLed on a bull campaign. The bears were
tncouraRed by the evident stress under which
tbe bulls labored yesterday In trying to sustain
values atweal : points and were p epared for
Algxiroua measures to break the market , Al-
thcmrti they had tbe ndtintase at the outside
of the quotations from London , the enr-ieit deals
shoned advances , Surar leading , but that Mock ,
toother with Manhattan and the coalers , was
roon weakened lij llU-ral offerlnm to rea Ire * nd
the reaction paon attacked the whole list- There
were -\try heavy dealings In Northern PaclSc
preferred , whlrh has been saarply advanced rv-
cenUy on rumors of n liberal dividend to be de-
Wared today. The action on < cmatna was
timed for about the hour of eluding ot the mar
ket and the street was kept busy nil day with
contradictory rumors on the subject. One of
thee had It that action on the dividend would
l > p po lpanrd altogether with a resulting decline in
th * stock Covering of sbons In tie ra..ly trading
and information of the dirpofUion ot tie di
rectors to disburse the firn dividend of I per
cent caused a rally of nearly a point In the
stock , bui left a net lo o : n sharp fraction.
The bears made vigorous attacks on all of the
storks of the local corporations which have been
recently advanced , the transit companies on talk
that the underground lapld transit plan was
about to tall and the pas companies on alleged
assurances of political favoritism. These stocks
all reacted from ov < r 1 per cenr and up to J per
cent. The stocks of the transit companies re
covered partly on the postponement of a. decision
on the underground plan. The break In tais
group , however , broke the market and preclpl-
tat-fd declines all through the list. Uany lead
ing stocks loft I per ctnt or over and ramz as
much as S per cent- The covering of shorts at
the close and the rally In local tranrlt stocks
reduced net losses In moft cases to fractions.
Tbe flock * of southern and bouthwtttem rail
roads weie comparatively nrm and shiw the
smallest lei ef , Union Pacific showed a ten
dency to rally , though It weakened somewhat
later upon a denial of the story that the reor
ganization committee had offered the government
the full amount of the principal of Us cJnim fcr
the eettlement of the Kansas Pacific controversy.
Ouslncrs through commission houses showed
a large falling off today and sales fur London
ancount continued on q.ulte a la-Re scale. The
general new of the day and statements of rail
road earnings , which were favorable were dis-
ecarde1 and the course of tbe market was line
almjst entirely to tne contest between profes
sional traders.
The feature of the bond market WE the de
cline of 4 points in the Kansas Pacific consttl.
dee to the aprt-henflon that the possible pur-
chts of the property bj the government mir
debar the holders from a chare In tbe Union
Pacific reorganization plan. The demand for
high grade bonds continued good an.t a number
of gains of from 1 to ! per cent were shown.
The rpeculative bonds reacted somew.'wt In sym
pathy with Horks. Total sales , .ir. .twO.
United States old 4s. registered , advanced to
day H bid and the Is 'A bid.
The Kvenine Port's London financial cable
gram : The ftock markets were flat en all forts
of vague and Improbable rumors , A feature
was the sharp fall of pound In AmerTan eop-
p r. These shades are widely held here and by
the best people , BO that the fall had a marked
effect on all the markets. Telegrams from tbe
Anaconda mines are said to report an unfavor
able output In the two lest months and Oat
the engineer * are coming- over to make explana
tions. In the meantime I am privately Informed
that the compans ha completed arrangements
with Its leading brokers and dealers here to sill
an unplaced balance ot shares. Ot * er mines
were alto flat. In sympathy with the fall in
Ottoman bank chares and is partly attributed to
sale * by that bank under the new management ,
of sbam long held. Americans nere Ir.egu'ir.
but with a good undertone. LouUvHe & Xaib-
\ille was largely bought arainil option. Argen
tines - ere a fraction easier. It was decided to
resume full wrvlce of tbe l3iC loan In January
next and to pay deterred interest on that loan
by March. TB mark u however , waa too un
comfortable to tie easily chrrred.

CATTLE After four clnya of liberal re
ceipts of cnltl * . amounting to 11.123 head ,
there was a decided falling off In the arri
vals tcday. Yesterday the receipts were
moderate and the arrivals today beinp still
lighter , an opportunity waa nnrorded for
cleanlns up the surplus , -which has given the
market n. more nealthy tone.
It looked for n time n" if country shto-
pe-rs hail become panlc-stripken. the -way
they crowded their cattle onto the market
In th face of steadily falling prices. If
only such cattle as ore ready for market
were allowed to come there would not be-
much dam.ire of a Klin for f > ome time to
come. It Is the flood of Immature and un
finished cattle fiat depresses the marlcst
and causes the sharp break In values.
Today there were not enough fat catUe
here to re.illy make a test of the market.
Such as there were sold at strong prices , but
there was nothing choice or nothing to put
a lop on the market. One three-load bunch
&od at $4.40 , and that constituted the bulk
of the offerlnirs.
Cow -and heifers were in good demand and
sold freely at steady prices. The dozen or
ilftwn loads soon found buyers , and the
pens were early cleared.
A few stockers and feeders -were on sale ,
but not enough to cut much of n. Hgure In
the trade. The prices paid were about the
same as prevailed yesserday. and there was
no material change In the general situation.
