"What In modern days wo have called hjii-

another , or unnamed , lias existed n. , long as
animate Wo In the world , " said Ur. A. 0.
Jrayman , who has devoted considerable study
0 hypnotism , both as an abstract science and
n Its bearing on medical practice , quotes the
New York Sun. "In the most ancient hit- :
orlcs we have evidences of this force In tlio
> ellef In the power of certnln men lo bc-
vltch others , which In the Latin races sur
vives In the fear of the ovll cyo. And from
ho earliest times in civilized rural com-
nunltles , as among all savage peoples , the
toilet In witch doctors men and women who

another lias prevailed , No doubt these oc-
lult healers often accomplish all they pro-
ess , and the secret of the euro Is the hyp-
totlc Influence they exercise upon the mind
" the ( Mtlcnt.
"In lower forms of animal nature wo find
nanlfcAtatlons of this power In the charmlnR
of blrtla and animals by snakes. The thing
hat led mo first to study this subject was
vhcn In boyhood I saw n frog fascinated by a
make. The snake , .which was about three
eel In length , of a. non-venomous species , lay
celled by the roadside , Its head resting upon
ts cells , the forked tongue darting from the
mouth , while its eyes wcro fixed on the frog ,
ivhlch. Eat motionless gazing on the snake a
'oot ' away. This was as they were when I
'oucul ' them ; how they came together I could
not tell. There apparently was nothing to
prevent the frog from hopping away out of
langer , but he chose to sawat there within
reach of his Inveterate enemy. I had on
errand that tcok mo a mile beyonil. I left
: ho two an they were , did my errand and
lurried back , The snake had retreated into
the long grass , where I found It with the
rog , half swallowed , In Us mouth ; the frog
vas fully alive , but was making no resistance
or attempt to get away from the snako.
CHA11MED BY A SNAKE.
Ton years later on the Amazon river , I
iiad n startling evidence of the hypnotizing
l > ewer of 'the snake family. In my occupa
tion of collecting bl l skins for mounting I
was threading a forest path , carrying In
my hand a gun loaded with very flno bird
shot , while my Indian guide followed , car
rying a licavlnr gun charged with bttck-
slwt , to use In case wo should come upon a
deer or a. jaguar. A bird of brilliant
plumage new Into a tree which overhung
the ipath , and as I peered Into the follago
trying to discern the .bird I became aware
of something swaying before my eyes and
a Hashing of prismatic colors , producing on
me something of the Impression ot a kaleido
scope. So unobtrusively had this thing ccmo
Into view that tt dawned only slowly on
my mind , preoccupied with the search for
the bird , that ' the object so softly reaching
toward mo'was tlio head and six feet of the
neck and body of an enormous water bca.
From Its mouth .tho forked tonguo'Was shootIng -
Ing and vlbratlmg and changing lights were
from Us eyes .bent on me. With my cocked
gun In my hand 1 did not think to use it
or run away , but stood gazing , literally
spnllboumJ , as the snake , clipping from the
bough on which It lay , advanced Its head
towaid me.
"I heard my guide shout from behind mo.
The snako's head drew back with an * angry
hiss as the Indian crowded past mo , raising
his gun 'to his shoulder < as ho did so , and
with 'the loud' crack , crack ! of the two bar
rels ho seized 'me with both arms nnd rushed
me 'back away from the placo. Then I saw
the snake , which had dropped from Iho
tree , writhing and twisting in. . the path an
Immense fellow , twenty-eight feet long and
of girth In. proportion. Its head was shat
tered by the two charges of buckshot , but
the convulsions cf the 'bcdy were encugh to
show the reptile's enormous strength and
give mo an Idea , of how I should have fared
If once It had thrown Its cells aotinfl me.
The tooa would have < lone this In a few
moments more , the guide tcTd mo , and if ho
had not rushed to my aid I would hive ,
stood still , fascinated , and never stirred 'to
avoid my fate. In ether words , the snake
had 'charmed' or hypnotized mo beyond all
power of resistance or retreat.
A MURDER PREVENTED.
"The two episodes Just related wcro In
my own experience. A third1 cane , illus
trating the human power ot hypnotizing , oc
curred with a friend of mlno named Jerome
Parker , 'Who at the time was .residing as a
sheep ranchman In the Argentine Republic.
He had In some > way offended a gaucho , as
the cowboys of the pampas ore called a
race of wild riders -mixed i-.pinlsh . and In
dian descent , -with the vengeful and blood
thirsty characteristics of both strains ot an
cestry and. unknown to my friend , the
gaueho had determined to kill him. The
time and place that he selected fcr carryIng -
Ing out his design was a holiday festival In
a llttlo plaza town tailed Santa 'Clara. Par
ker was there , but , as after itho fashion of
ranchmen at that time in the ipampas , ho
carried a pistol in open , vlew , and more
over bad friends with him likewise aimed ,
the gaucho thought It toy risky to try the
'business with his knlfo nnd so resorted to
his other deadly weapon , the lasso. Dut to
use this effectively It was necessary to catch
my frlontl oft Ills guard , and the first effort
of the gaucho was to engage 'his ' attention.
"During the flrat rart of the nay thcro
wore tricks and games by horsemen and
other performances In skill to .imuse . the
crowd. At last the gaucho referred to , dis
mounting from his horse and taking his
position In front ot Parker , began a per
formance with his lasso. Ho had two
musicians as accompanists , and , to the
strains ot a wolrd air played In slow time on
a guitar and an Indian drum , ho made the
rope .writhe'and roll on the ground before
him In endless cells like u thing alive , then
swung It above Ills head In loops and spirals ,
his feet at the same tlmo keeping step , and
with lasso still twirling ho set footllnto his
Btlrrup and swung himself upon his horse's
back ; then' , as the crowd about gazed In rapt
sllenco at this strange performance , the
lasso suddenly shot forth , straight as an
arrow from his hand , and the loop settled
about the shoulders of Parker. With a yell Iho
gnucho wheeled Ills horse and set spurs to
him , Intending to drag Parker to death wlile !
making goo.l his own escapo. Parker was
Jorkcd from his feet a yard Into ; the air ut
the first Jump of the horse , falling heavily to
the ground , with both arms pinioned by the
I lasso. Ho wns powerless to help himself ,
but as luck would have it a wagon drawn by
eight mules , which was creasing the plaza ,
lay right across the gaucho's path , and as ho
turned to pass around It an American la the
crowd with a revolver shot the horse through
the shotidcr , bringing him to the ground ,
The gaucho flllppcd from the animal's back
ea it fell , and , drawing ills knife , ntaite.1 for
Parker , when the American shot him twlco ,
throu-sht the leg and the body , stepping him.
I Parker was Inseiwlblo when picked up , but
i was not seriously Injured , The gaucho died
' of his wounds.
"Tho thing that particularly Interested mo
In this episode , as a hypnotist , was the
carefully planned and well-executed method
which the gaucho took to fix the attention
of his Intended victim , and the friends about
him. upon the performance with the rope ,
leaving himself free to carry out his design
of murder without hindrance anil ho would
have succeeded had It not 'been for the un-
foracen accident of the wagon blocking the
way ,
"In duels In all ages , In the 'working up of a
drop' by frontier desperadoes In the far west ,
In every poker game In which expert players
arc engaged , the exorcise of hypnotic In
fluence Is Involved , the perswi possessing the
I Htronger will or magnetic force using his
power for Intimidating or otherwise In-
lluenclng the other , The revolving mirrors
1 and other equipment of the professional
i hypnotist are mechanical aids for predispos
ing a subject to yield to the same Inlluencu ,
which an attentive observer may see ex
ercised In the whole round of animal life
without much help. "

Immediately In the honao committee on In
dian affairs and probably the bill will be
reported to Iho house early In January.
There nro many Importnnt matters before
It , but everything now will give way to
the appropriation bill. The most Importnnt
subjects ro the vexatious problems In In
dian Territory , Involving the reorganization
ol the territory In matteis relating to the
Indians. The Dawcs Indian commission Is
now negotiating with the flvo tribes , but
the outlook Is not very encouraging , nnd
some very Important legislation along the
line of the negotiations has been planned.
Thn commission wlU bo summoned hero
shortly by the secretary of the Interior. It
Is understood , and action by the. committee
will bo deferred pending the appearance of
the commission before It to explain the pit-
nation there , nnd to make recommendations.
So tar only two tribes have ratified the
commission's agreements , Those nro the
Choctaws anil Chlckaeaws , nnd the agree

have been rejected. The Somtnolcs also have
not taken any favorable action , and In view
of the general disappointing outlook , arbi

A remarkable feature of the proposed
Shortening1 the course ot Instruction for a
college degree to three years , says Leslie's
Weekly , Isthat the experiment has never
been made before In a. land whore so much
is sacrilicca to a saving of tuna , and where
conservative sentiment so rarely stands In
the way of an innovation along lines of
utility. The utility hero is the gain of a
year for the graduate's actual battle with
life. Under the elective system an Har
vard It has long been possible for a bright
student to reid up satisfactorily In three
years on the subjects required for a de
gree , and Ilio has been encouraged to do this
by the president , who , over tmco ho became
the chief olllccr of the university , has been
changing the old order In many particulars ;
but formal recognition of thU procedure has
been delayed. Thu marked 'Improvement In
preparatory academies , some of them non-
colleges on a small scale , and several comparable
parable- with England's celebrated public
schools In stnnJards , is an essential factor In
this evolution. But it Is a question whether
i boy's digestion Is equal to the robust meal
'Kiat Is spread for him at Harvard or Yale ,
and whether ho ought not to Da older rather
than younger to assimilate It. A case In
point Is tiiat of a Harvard youth of 20 who
read f'lato and Arlstotlo In the orlgliMl
Greek under Prof , W. W. Goodwin , ono of ithe
beat of teachers , ntvl came awny with a nsn-
scnslcal smattering of those authors , whom
toe- reread last year , at 35 , with 'Infinite de
light.
