May wheat opened lower nnd advanced , but broke bndly on very liberal seeding estimates , nnd closed % c lower. Most of the statis tical news favored lower prices. Corn and oats were unchanged nt the close , while provisions showed small advances. At the opening , nnd for a short time after , A-lunt was In a wenk condition. Opening aCSS'/ifiWHc. as compared with Saturday's closlnn price of SOHc , It sold off slowly under fairly liberal orterfnus to 8ST4c. Early news almost altogether favored sellcra , .Liverpool , which opened Vid lower , showed W.4d , declines at 1.TO p. m. Hut so Jlrm was * the market tnut even the ex cesstve Increase fell flnt In ao far as af fecting prices was concerned. The arrival hero of 2S4o:0 : bu. by lake from Duluth , 2i7 cars by rail and the relnipecllon of 279. cars from prlx-atc to public elevators , all of contract grade * , did not dampen the ; ardor of the buying. At 12 o'clock .May had sold as lilslt as Wtc. the market being helped a great dbal by rallies at N w York and St. Ixjuls. The market held very steady nt that price for Koine time , became suddenly wink and dropped to KS c. This was due to the "Oranpe Judd Farmer" report , which pave the area of winter wheat sown ns If per cent larg. r than the crop harvested In 1R37 , although the rondltlon of the plant was put at only SI per cent. There was an endeavor on the part ot early buyers to realize on their purchases , but a lack of supporting orders , either from outside or In , rendered this dltllcult , and the decline to SSsic resulted. Just nt the close nn effort was made to buy some December , but We had to be paid , a cent above Saturday's close. May closed nervous at SS7Bc. Tin-re was not much done In corn. The market opened a shade lower , with wheat , but became steady after a further sllsht decline and held well throughout the ses sion , notwithstanding the break In wheat , closing at nearly the top price of the day. The trade wns almost entirely professional. Receipts were 394 cars. Liverpool was ' .iWitl lower. The large out-Inspection. : .2MOf" > bu. , nnd liberal shipments , SOI.OOO bu. , had n strengthening tendency ; May ranged from 2Sic to 2SUS < 2SlsC : and closed nt 2S'tc. Mnrket for oats was a very narrow one , with small offerings and equally restricted demand. The market was weak early In the day , following the course of wheat , but soon steadied. Although speculators In stocks have sought to Influence prices for sev eral weeks by surmises In the contents of the president's message the actual publication ot that document today had little effect en the market. There was nothing In It that came as a uuiprlse almost every point having been ac curately foretold In detail. 1'rkea of stacks had been advanced to some extent In anticipation of tlia message and there was seme expectation that Its publication would be met by a decline caused by realizing sales. But the market held fairly steady after Its publication until a raid by the b ars In the tlnal hour , which was en couraged by the weakness of New Jersey Cen tral and the coaleiu. Union Pacific was < ll- rcvtly affected by the paragraph devoted to It In the message nnd declined nearly u point. Its strength was caused by the approach ing dividend period and belief In the advantage arising from the newly applied countervailing duties. Manhattan was at one time 24 points above Saturday's clc.se on l > ellef that the proposed underground rapid transit plan will beeto l by tbe courts. Hock Island continued to enjoy an advantage from Us newly perfected refunding plan and gave strength to the other grangers by sympathy. Some of today's railway state ments of earnings for the fouith week In No vember were so favorable oa to lift the prices of their stocks. Tnls was notably true ot MI&- sourl 1'aclllc. which showed an Increase In earn ings of K7CGO\ and In Louisville , \\hwe gain was nearly $70.X)0. ( ) Each of these stocks rose a point. Clexe'and. New Jersey Central con uicuously to , on a break of 2Hi points from the highest In this stiKk. which encouraged the late raid by the bears and lowered the level of prices through out the market. The money market continued easy and It Is reported larpe loans were offered for Chicago and other wititern banks In this matket. Not withstanding the ease of money nnd a chnr } > stiffening In the discount rate , both on London ami Ueriln , sterling exchange was weak. There were a good many fat cattle on sale In proportion to the total receipts , but no very great number of what mlsht be termed good cattle. The market opened strong , and such cattle as happened to piease buyers on their llrst rounds sold to good advantage. Later on as It became ap parent that the number of cattle on sale was jual to or In txcess of the require ments of buyers , the market eased oft and closed slow and weak with some unsold. Cavs and heifers were In good demand nnd the market wns fullv steady. In fact , buyers complained that It was hard work to buy decent cow stuff at steady prices. Desirable lots were taken early. Feeders and stockers ivere In fair demand , but the market was no higher. The most desirable kinds , that Is chojce light stuff , sold well , but cattle that were a little off did not move so free-ly , and In some cases holders of such thought that they had to take less money than the same cattle would have brought last week.
