The ccner.l1 business situation was very
much the snmo last week as It was ( ho
week before , and no marked change Is an
ticipated until after this comlnp of the ntw
year. That there Is plenty of buMncpg do
ing Is shown by the bank clearing , by the
reports of Individual houses and by the gen.
ernl nlr of prosperity noticeable In the trade
centers of the city.
In the last two weeks the jobbers have
done a good business as the outcome of the
retail demand that was quickened by the
more seasonable weather that marked the
close of November and the opening of De-
comber. And now nt the beginning of the
last month of the year jobbers ilnd that
their stocks have undergone a material re
duction In rplte of the many new goods
of a Rcacsonablc character that have been
ntiik-d from time to time.
It was only reasonable to expect that
buplnrss In n jobbing way would slack up
aftir stocks In the country were once put
In reasonable simp * . To some extent these
expectation * lmv < been realized and here
ami th' ru a let up In the country demand
Is discernible. At the same time It must
lit admitted that there has been no such
falllPK on" In Jobbing operations is Is usual
ru tlilK M > n. on of the year. It seems al
most rcmaikablu that trade should hold up
no well and now that real winter weather
has set In It will not b surprising If busi
ness even In staple HUES continues active
rlsht to the holidays.
In the meantime the near approach of the
hol'day ' Be-nson has stimulated business In
all ( li pin Uni-ntH devoted to such goods as
. are generally In demand at this time of the
yrjir.
The storm the latter part of the week
creatid n decided change for the better In
retail trade circles. Tnc Improvement was
especially noticeable In the demand for al-
kln ls of footwear , while the clothing stores'
c.itm In for no small share of the benellts.
Tl o rctiill trade us a whole Is In much bet
ter chape than It was n month ago , and as
a rule retail merchants appear to be very
well satlKlle-il.
Hank cleurelnss , showing large gains over
the record made n year ajo , only tend to ,
prove the assertions already made to the
effect that business generally Is of a very
Ba'lnfactory character and far ahead of
what It was n few months ago.
JO1U1EHS AND MANUFACTURERS.

tant points In the Interest of L'.nlnger &
Mctcalf Co.
Visiting traveling men remark that busi
ness In Chicago , generally spunking , Is dull
and In HOIIIU departments of the wholesale
trade there Is aJ good deal of complaint.
The Nebraska chicory fields this season ,
though not turning out as well as last year
owing to lack of rain the latter part of the
mitnm.r. will produce a thousand tons of
dried routs.
Mr. Metcalf of the l.lnlnger & Metcalf Co.
Jias returned from an extended eastern
trip. He found all the factories behind
with orders and everyone anticipating the
Inrpe-st trade ever known for the coming
reason.
I'axton < fe Gallagher company are arrang
ing to increase their tloor space by putting
In shelving on the first lloor , the lower story
of their building being eighteen u-et , so that
there Is plenty of ppacc for carrying out
BUch a scheme.
Branch & Co. recently received a box of
poultry from the country and on opening it
up found a pair of spectacles. It Is a serious
question in their minds whether tne shipper
Intended that they should sell the spectacles
on commission or whether he sent them that
they might see the market more clearly.
The Western Electrical company has
secured the. contract for the equipment ot

perous of the towns In the slate and no
money or expense Is to be spared In malt-
ItiK tnts one 01 tno most , complete eiecinc

fornlans estimate that this --xoson's crop

eastern consumers about double that
amount , IIH thejl have to pay the freight.
Hardware people are very much Inter
ested In the rumors of negotiations looking
to the consolidation of tlio wire nail and wire
rod Interests. To "feet such a combination
the seven bljr factorsea must nil be brought
in , and In addition a large number of small
concerns. The small manufacturers appear
to be the people most difficult to deal with
nnd the collapse of the wire nail pool a year
ago mas due to their uctlon.
Christmas business has started out well
In Omaha and gives prpmlse of exceeding
nil -previous records. Omaha jobbers have
put In large stocks of holiday goods in an
ticipation of a large demand , nnd so far
they have not been disappointed. The people
ple In the country have more money to
spend on holiday poods than during the
last thrco years am ! retailers knowing that
fact have and still are buying freely.
Hetnll Implement Dealers of Nebraska and
Jowa will meet In convention at Council
1 tin IT H January 12 to 15. Hetween 200 and
( iOO dealers are expected to be present at this
meeting. The meeting of last year , which
was also held nt the Bluffs , was largely
attended nnd the Interest In the work In
Jiand has rather Increased than decreased
during the year. Prominent jobbers and
manufacturers from all sections of the
country will be present.
The Chlcapo Journal of Commerce says
that something llko n permanent trade
Humiliation has manifested Itself In Ne
braska , and commercial agencies have made
n special report on the fact that jobbing
centers are finding sales easy and collec-
tlon prompt Omaha trade has shown a
preat Influx of steady orders. For some
yearp consumers of iiardware have bern
pursuing a very conservative system and
the demands now coming forward are
Jieavy. While the recent rush Is practically
over , trade Is still active , and In several
metal lines manufacturers are yet behind
in shipping orders to leading Jobbers.
The coming of the winter ceason usually
witnesses u large Increase In the berging
nuisance with which business men have
to contend. The business man Is beset from
morning until night with people who want
Mm to buy tickets to this or that ball or
rntertnlnnu-nt. or contribute goods for this
or that fair or charitable Institution , or J3ln
this or that movement for some one else's
benefit. In not n few Instances tlusu de
mands amount to little more than black-
mall as the business man Is promised the
patronage of the begging- organization In a
way that carries with it a threat to boy
cott him If In falls tu comply with the de
mands made upon him ,
Work U progressing ns rapidly as could
be expected on the creameries at Leigh and
Llnwood. The plants tinder construction
will cost about $4.PW each , nnd will be sup
plied with separators manufactured by
the Sharpies company of this city. The
Kime company has been doing u Inlge busi
ness In I'tah , when * there appears to lie u
Kood deal of Interest of late ; In the cream-
< ry buslnt'ss. Iartles are figuring on build
ing a creamery at Klba , Neb , Those who
nre wel' Informed In the matter say that
there Is no danger of this business being
overdone In Nt'biaska , MS the demand Is
far In txcwi of the supply. Denver is now
buying creamery butter In Nebraska and Is
IMiylnt ; Klgln prices for It on board the
cars at the shipping pglnt.
The hardware Jobblnjr houres of the coun
try are now making their contract * with bl-
cicle manufacturers for the coming sea-
hon AH a general thing , the well advertised
makcH are naturally receiving the prefer
ence. Hardware people think that wheels
will be handled more gent-rally through
hardware liounen next season than ever be
fore , though dealer * who make a specialty
of wheels would hurdly be expected to see U
that way. It would , however , seem to be n
Fettled fact that the hardware trade of the
country B-rnn-ars bent upon capturing the
/wheel trade and making that , a part of their
regular busliu-s * . It Is tul-1 that the pr'ce '
of wheels will be less next year , though the
material cost more , rAhlt-h means that man

CHICAGO , Dec. 4. A decline of Tic , -with
which wheat was opened today , was partd
down by the action of shorts to a. net de
cline of He at the close. Weak cables were
rc-cponslble for the early decline , but the
clearances , the largest for the season , made
a fairly llrm market toward the close. Corn
and oats were firm nnd advanced He nnd
WCHc , respectively. Provisions advanced
5@10o. on a good shipping demand ,
Wheat started weak and at HOttc decline
for May. Liverpool was Ud lower for De
cember , % d lower for March nnd : d down
for May , compared with yesterday's closing
ingrates. . The 'weather 1iad turned from
severe frost to a decided thaw over the
greater part of the winter wheat country
and the Minneapolis and Duluth receipts
were again not far from double those nt
the corresponding tlmo of the year before.
The market did not for some time elvo
much Indication of doing better , but In the
course of an hour from the start It had a
small modicum of firmness.
The openlngj > rlces for May were from S > c
to K Vlc , compared with S0c at the close
Friday. On the slight rally that followed
It sold up to S94c. January , during- that
time , made some peculiar changes , selling
nt from i9ie , when May was tSc and at S < c
when May was bringing & 9Uc , or nt from
ic premium to lic dl&count compared with
May prices.
The weakness at 1-lvorpool was accounted
for by the editor of the Liverpool Corn
Trade News , In which he said the decline
was owing to selling for March and May
on orders from Chicago , and also to Tho-
man's report Issued yesterday.
Minneapolis nnd Duluth receipts were S0 >
cars , against W7 cars a week ago nnd 4C9
cars the corresponding day of the year
before. The primary receipts were as bear
ish as ever , thi > total of the day being 913-
OOO bu. , against only 532,000 bu. on the Htte
day of the year bifore. Thp expected in
crease In the visible of uOO.OOO bu. to be real
ized will stand contrasted with 252,003 bu.
decrease for the similar period of IS ! * ! .
The week's exports from both coasts were
C.TPO.OOO bu. , the largest but once before tor
one week's shipments. The day's clearances
from Atlantic ports were liberal at the
equivalent In wheat nnd floun of 717.00J bu.
Those liberal shipments , combined with
firmness of the Paris and Antwerp markets ,
considering the previous day's weakness
lu-re added to the recovery of May teX
X > \c , but reacted a little under scattered
realizing and closed at M"ic or He lower
than It did yesterday. December wag neg
lected by the general crowd and was only
heard from at wide Intervals. It sold
from WOWlJc at the opening , to Sj'tc , and
closed nt Die , which shows no change for
the day.
Corn at the opening sold lie lower than
nt the close yesterday. Influenced by tin-
weakness In wheat , but good buying by
local shorts and commission houses caused
the market to react nnd later prices ruled
firm. The renewed exports of corn for the
week 1,335.000 bushels were a bullish In
fluence. Cables were I4d lower. Receipts
were 4SS cars. May ranged from 2Ss > c to
2SHc and closed He higher nt 2S4c.
Oats ruled firm , on buying by local oper
ators and elevator people. Light offerings
aided In the upturn of prices and also
caused the trade to be rather limited.
Sympathy with corn was a factor. Re
ceipts were 357 cars. Selling was scattered
and entirely local. May ranged from VaC
to 21Hc and closed 2c hlphfr at 22aic.
Provisions were llrm. The basis of the
strength was the excellent demand from
domestic and foreign sources for the cash
products. The shipments from Chicago for
the week were so heavy ns to be the subject
of general remark. Exporters were cred
ited with liberal purchases of January lard.
The market opened steady at about yes
terday's prices and gradually advanced ,
closing strons at close to the top. At tho.
close Januarv pork was lOc higher at

NE\V YORK. Dec. 4. Today'p stock market
was left almost entirely to the room traders nnd
they seemed disposed to depress prices durlns
the early part of the cession by sh irt Mies.
Their efforts met with little response nnd they
covered befoe the close. brlnRlnc prlc-e In most
< -iKA ellehtlv nhnve vpKterdax-'s rloseThe
movement of prices was. however , trivial
throughout the day , except In n few FjK-clal
capes.
Manhattan reflected the anxiety of these who
had bought } esterday under the mlrtiikrn Im
pression that the underground rapid transit plan
had been declared unconstltutlon.il. Heavy of-
ferlng ? at the opening- sold the stock down a.
point , the lowest of the day. Tne close was
near the low point after n full recovery In the
meantime. All sorts of rumors were afloat re
garding the stock , and dealings In U were
quite feverish.
Sugar was traded In for the most part at a
level below yesterday's .close , the supply of
stocks being- apparently large on any nnvuncc.
Chicago Great Western showed a degree of
strength on account of Its large pen-entage of
increase of earnings for thifourth week in No-
vemlwr. Susquehanna & Wtilen continued to
rise In price , and Dea.waru ! & > ludson of the
c > al group sympathlied. but New Jer ey Central
and the Reading stocks , on the otber hand , were
heavy. The day's news so far fas It was re
garded was fHxorable , statements of the fourth
week earnings that were. jiubflsned showing
large earnings and handsjme Increases.
The Increase In cash was not' ' sulflclent to
cover Increased requlremenjs of' the legal re-
sc-ve caused by the heavy Increase In d poslttv.
and the consequence Is still furtBer declines In
the surplus reserve There tiffs Heon nothing In
the general requirements of the money market
during the -week to account for the expansion of
H,476.MO In the loans , and It Is probably due to
borrowing on exchange. U J estimated that
J10.ooo.ooo of foreign exchange has been allowed
to accumulate In thin city during the week , and
the fact that prices of exchange have not been
materially lowered shows -that It Is withheld
and the money loaned abroad. There Is a con
tinuance of Investment buying ) of longtwhange
in anticipation of the usual return movement of
trade after the llm of the year.
Although the Imports of- general merchandise
at this port for the week .show a sha.ti > falllnu
off , the receipts at the custom. fiou e Indicate a
growth of the Improvement during November ,
which the buyers of lonpr exchange eipect will
Incrtasft still further ns the stocks are -worked
off -which were Imported In anticipation of the
tanrr law. unless the Import movement of gen
eral merchandise shall Uvome very heavy In the
next few months lone exchange must prow a
poor Investment In view of the outgo of mer
chandise the last "few months.
London advices during- the week have reported
a very heavy American demand In that market
for high crade railroad bonds. The same de
mand hod existed In the New York market with
a very limited supply , which was largely fur
nished for foreign account an well as In London.
This wauld Indicate further heavy transfer to
thl side of the water of the highest-priced rnll-
nvsd securities In sufficient volume to have quite
tn appreciable effect upon the exchange bal-
nnre.
The activity of the bond market has been a
feature of the Stock exchange here all week ,
and the total dealings In bonds on Thuroiay
was of a par valua of nearly 14.700 0 < X )
The activity of the stix-k market hss been snas-
modlc. The week opened with evidences of an
awakenerl oiiUIJo Interest In the market , due to
the sharp advances of rrtday and Saturday pre
vious , but the buyers of that i > erlod took occa
sion to realire on Monday apd turneJ price *
backward again. Tuesday and Wednesday the
bulls loaded up again and prices slowly har
dened. Thursday opened with great nnlmatlon
anrt riflng prices , but while the animation con
tlnued the rife soon cnme to a ttop anil soon
prices were fulling- quickly and sharply. This
second realizing movement by the powerful op
erators , whose resources enabled them to manip
ulate the prices , threw the market Into semi-
stagnation , from which It hewed no sign of
recover } ' either Friday or today. The reactions
have net. however , wiped out all gains , nnd the
week shows net gains of between 1 and 2 per
cent on some , notably Sugar , 4l < per cent. Penn.
pylvanla. Chicago Great Western , Missouri Pa
cific and Union Pacine. The rise of Tuesday
and Wednesday was due primarily to the ag-
irresslvj an.1 confident buyingof Influential com
blned interests. But the factors which Induced
a large follow-in * were the favorable railroad
statements , notably the October statements of
the Pennsylvania , and Durllngton , and the state
ments In general of gross earnings for the fourth
week of November and the announcement of the
Rock Island re-fundln * scheme end the sale ot
$52.0W.toO $ of the refunding bonds. The free offer
ings of stocks on thH advance show the disposi
tion to await the shaping of policies by con.
Kress before buying securities to hold.
The bor > J market has shown less hesitancy
than stocks , and prices Irsve steadily advanced ,
though periods of lessened activity have accom *
panled the declines In prices of stocks.
The supply of high grade bonds has been un
equal to the- demand , and the demand has be"n
overflowed ! to the low-price } bonds , which fho.v
notable gains In price. Total sales , JlS.fnX ) .
United States bonds were strong. The new 4s are

The Evening Post's London nnanclal cable
gram i-ays : "The flock marki-ts here were again
stagnant today. Americans were steady , hut
lifeless , pending Preslfem McKlnley's message.
The tone wss hoi -ful. the continued fall In
Indian exchange excites attention. It Is partly
duo to purchases of silver , and to anticipations
of the resumption of weekly council drawings.
Uruguay bonds were better , a syndicate having
betn formed to take over Mullman's holdings. "

condition the past week for the sellers
though on some days It was not entirely
to their liking. The week opfned strong
and showed a still further advance on fat
cattle on Tuesday. On Wednesday the mar

Influence of the break In values In eastern
markets , and the week closed with the bust
cattle about lOc lower and the less desirable
kinds lollll'c ' lower than the high point of
the weik , which was Tuesday.
Today thcro were hardly enough cattle
on sale to make- market. On the opening
market only one load ot fat cattle was of
fered , which sold Just about steady.
A considerable proportion of the receipts
consisted of butchers' stock , about a dozen
loads of cows and heifers being on sale.
The demand was food and the early ar
rivals nivt with ready sale at tirm pricey.
As Is Invariably the rule on a Saturday
there was very little doing In the feeder
division ; In fact there was very little to do
with. Such cr.ttle as were to be had sold
at Just about steady prices. Representative
