NEW YORK. Dec. r The character of the
buying of tie last few days was disclosed by
today's result on the Stock excbanse. The day
opened with every appearance of yesterdays
sharp demand for stock being still in force.
Tbe lower prices from London were Ignored
aad lurge orders placed on special ctoki cauted
sharp advances tn tbe whole m rk-t. Tbe
amount of commission house buying Indicated a
considerable awakening of outside Interest. Tbe
buying of grangers' , irjgar and Union PaciBc
was especially bold and confident and by the
clew of the first hour the market was buoy
ant and sjme sharp advances In prlres had been
obtained. Then , without any diminution of ac
tivity. It bwarae evident taat toe advance In
prices had come to a step and that a bear-
realizing movement was tn progress. Wben
Sugar fell a point and the general list showed
an actual decline the. marktt became da t and
efforts were made ta tally It by pushing up
the prices of special stocks. First New Jersey
Central , then People's Gas and Rock Island
wera rushed up by manipulation. But this plan
proved unavailing to effect a renewal of the
advance and durin ? the final huur the tone
of the matket had become decidedly weak and
there was lively throwing overboa-d of stocks
to pave losses , T e bean added the pressure
of snort sales and before long had succeeded
in wiping out alBK t every gain on the list.
Net twe- were not large in any Import&n :
cases , bet the fall In prices from the high point
was marked , extending to 3 points in Sugar.
I points in Consolidated Gas. t and S points In
many of the spec lttes and over a point In
the granger * and many leading active stocks.
The news of th day ww not important In
Its relation to the - < tock market and such as It

over tbe prospects that western railroad tales

justment was probable between the government
and the Union Pacific reorganization committee
orer tbe Kansas division of the road gave spe
cial strength to Union PaciBc ani was a tus-
tainlng factor in tbe general market.
There was som f * I line of stocks for Lon
don account , but It was without much effect
and was about concluded by the time the re
action set tn in this market.
The market for beads was broad , active and
strong. Sales for tbe first hour footed up to a

CATTLE A peed many trains have ben
arrivintr late during the past few weeks ,
which frequently acts as a hindrance to the
market. Uuyers do not like to go it bi'nd
and attempt to fill orJers until they knoa
what will be on sale. = orce < 5ay - .e early
receipts show up fina.il , but the cattle will
keep stringing in a few r-i.-s at a ume until
the to til shows up'aelt. ' This tends to make
a dull , dragging market ana Is decidedly
against the best interests of shippers. No
pains should be spared to get the stock here
in gooJ reason and have it yarded early.
Today's early reports showed eighty-seven
cars of cattle in , but thre were sixty-seven
cars of stock of all klri'a reported back.
The market on beef steers was not much
changed , salesmen generally calling it just
about steady. The average quality of the
offering however , was not overly good and
buyers claimed that the market > jca *
stronger , taking quality into consideration.
While the trade was .at no ilnW very active
the most of the cattle sold in good season.
Coifs and heifer.nere in fair supply aid
commanded peed prices. Local packers took
hold and cleared the yards early.
Quite a good many little stock cattle were
rt-ceived. but tbe demand for that kind of
stuff is quite bri < = k and the market was a
little stronger. Heavy feeders did not s5ow
much change in regard to values. - Representative
