THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SUNDA , NOVBAtBBll 28 , 1807. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Jabbing Trade Moves Right Along in a Very Catitfactory Manner , COLLECTIONS GOOD FOR W.NTER SEASON Colder Wrntlicr n AVrlcomc CliniiKC fur All llrinirlirs of IlimlnmH AVrck Cloticil nltli Ilctnll Trnilc Act ive In All Icmrliiicnt . The past week wns In most respects like the previous week fo for as the character of business cloltip was concerned. Down In the Jobbing district evcrythlnfj moved along In a satisfactory manner , but new features of Importance were not developed. The In tervention of a holiday In the middle of the week nnturally breaks In Upon trade In ntnplu linen , and to some extent Is a de moralizer of the recular routine. At the turns- time It stimulates the demand for certain lln < > s of goods which makes up for the fulling off of sales In other depart ments. The holiday trade this year was very sat isfactory In the main , though It may be said to have ! been somewhat spotted. That Is , while some houses reported a very large business doing , some other houses seemed to feel rather disappointed at the outcome. The totnl volume of sales , however , wns much larner this year than last. The peo- jile In all sections of tributary territory have more money than n year ugo nnd the liolldny was more generally observed as a feast day. Sales of such fancy goods ns nuts , confectionery , dried fruits , etc. , were lutgre the week before , while poultry nb- porbcil the attention during the three days preceding the holiday. It has been several years since Omaha Indulged Its uppetltc for Thanksgiving cheer no liberally ns th ( . past week. Srme of the who.esule commission houses In the produce district report the largest business , In their lilstory. while all were very busy. Weather conditions are becoming more favorable every duy , Inasmuch as a lower temperature Is compelling consumers to supply themselves wllti winter goods of all kinds. A decided Improvement Is noted In the country trade during the past few- days Incident to this change In weather conditions which can hardly fall to be re flected In the demand for merchandise at jobbing houses. In the retail districts of the city the sudden change has been pro ductive of active buying , anjl the trade ut the eloFe of the week was iuout the live liest thnt It has been nny time this season. Stormy and wet weather would probably Btlll further Increase the demand for poods at retail especially In certain lines , but without that the condition of trade Is quite eutlsfactory. OmnhnV bank clenrlags for the past week twere small , owing to the fact that the week contained only live business days , but at thp same time they showed n very gratify ing gain over the corresponding week last year , the rateof Increase being larger than the average for the whole country. The past was n busy week at South Omnha owing to the extensive building operations that are b Ing carried on. The work on the new exchange building Is being pushed forward with srent viper nnd one portion of the building la already under roof. There was also a heavy business doing In live stock ; for a holiday week , tht arrivals of hogs having been the largest In n long time. JOBBERS AND MAXTFACTTOEnS. The Wtstnrn Electrical company Is put ting In the electric lighting plant nt the State Normal school at Tent. The com pany also has the contract for lighting the state Insane asylum at Norfo'.k Governor Tanner of Illinois has notified the managers of tlhe various state Institutions that hereafter oil supplies for s-ate Institu tions must be purchared of citizens of Illi nois , Instead of from parties In other states The governor cxiplalns his action by saying that he has noticed an Inclination on the I > art of Jome of the managers of state In stitutions to buy supplies In adjoining states but that outKl'.le merchants and inanufac- iturero did not pay taxes In Illinois nnd did not contribute In any 'way to the support of th state Institutions. At the same time there are plenty of manufacturers In the fitatc who could supply all that mlgTit be needtxl nt the state lnsttutlon : . The gov ernor of Nebraska , nnd the State Board of Purchase and Supplies have been fo lowing this plan for some little time and It has resulted In the keeping of a peed deal of work at home Instead of Its being sent out of the state. There Is some disposition among the managers of fome of the Ne braska state Institutions to discriminate against homo products In frpite of the fa vorable action of the state board. Cnlcago jobbers are considerably inorked up over the Inroads upon tftelr trade ; hat are being made by western jobbers. Ac cording to the Chicago Times-Herald , efforts nre being made In that city to establish an organization for tha purpose of boomlns trade with the west and to recurc direct a laru'o ' proportion of she business which Is now given to the smaller jobbing centers. The Chicago Journal o.f Commerce adds that this movement should Intluence forcibly the Jobbers of t.tat city. "The marol of prog ress , " continues that paper , "has passed Chicago fur beyond and established pro gressive Jobbing centers at favorably located points In prosperous sections of thewest. . Within the past ten years small jobbing hous.en nt Omihn , Kansas City. Davenport. Indianapolis. Sioux City , Milwaukee , Minne apolis and St. Paul have grown Into youns Klants tftat nre coping courageously with the Chicago Jobber for the hardware trade In the entire .errltory they embrace. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL December Wheat Falls Back a Little from Dollar Mark. INCREASE IN WINTER WHEAT OFFERINGS Advance llt-lim * HcnvjOfr < Tlnn from the Interior , Wlilcli limit n le- lnu Influence I'pon the Market. CHICAGO. Nov. 2" . All of yesterday's l * o advance In May whc.it was lost today , while December dropped l ; c. There wns a blp Increase In winter wheat offerings , espe cially from Indiana , and this was very ef fective with the crowd , who sold from the start. Other markets were dull with nar row fluctuations and only slight changes In prices at the close. Wheat opened weak for both May n.nd December. May started ViP o lower at M'iGM'ic nnd December at We , a decline of lie. Liverpool cables were disappointing , showing but > i < 5H < 3 advance as a response to the bulge here yesterday. Northwest receipts were 974 cars , against 972 cars last week. The persistency with -which receipts up there refuse to fall oft. In spite of all predictions to the contrary , was also a clog to the market. It developed that the heavy advance In December was having Its natural effect upon country shippers , iwho possessed any that would pass Inspec tion. Wheat that would have gone to To- kdo or St Louis under nominal conditions was headed this way and 80,000 bushels of red No. 2 winter wheat from Indiana was sold In the pit from We to M > ic for Decem ber delivery. The opening decline In that future was pressed into a still further re duction when the above Information be came generally known. Chicago receipts were 2M ) ciu-s. IJradstreet's report made clearances of wheat nnd Hour for the week from both roasts at R,4rM.nO ) bu hels , against , CTkl , )0 ) bushels the weeck before and 3,7 3.000 bupi'i- e.s the corresponding week of IbM. There was some bull news to hand , but little at tention wns paid to It. New York reported R2 boat loads sold for export. 20 of them for Austria. The day's clearances from the Atlantic seaboard amounted to 490,000 bush- c-ls. Only about 750.000 bushels Increase in the visible Is expected Monday. Tne advices from the northwest were that owing to bad weather farmers' deliveries lutd materially fnllt-n off. The bearish ef fect of the sales of No. 2 red winter wheat to urrlve here from India wns Increassd when It became known that handlers of cash wheat were sellers of carloads to ar rive from Iowa and Nebraska correspond ents who had No. 1 northern spring to ship. Armour dfc Co. likewise sold December wheat In the pit , which was supposed to be against wheat bought In Duluth to come here. Selling of December finally became so free that the market broke to 97hc. Near the opening it had sold as high as 99Vie. It steadied somewhat at 97'Ae ami by clos ing time had recovered to 97 ic. May did > i pt 1-1 v t-sc-npe It sold brtween 02i4i Kie. ; then broke to 91' > ic. closlnc nt 91ic. Corn was slow , wi.h trade for the most part consisting of transfers of December contracts to May at about 3KQ34C dlfter- r.r < \ Thf tendency of prices was sllphtly downward , due to receipts of S4G cars anO s > u.i > atny with tne die-line in wheat. Cables tv-tv , - ff. < i higher. Atlantic clearances were 301,000 bushels. May ranged from 2SUc toiiC , and closed a shade lower at 29Hc. Oats were weaker nnd closed lower. The decline In wheat had a depressing effect. December showed some strength shortly after the opening on a fair demand , but the pdvance was lost later. Elevator Interests did most of the selling. NEW lOtlK , Nov. 17-Tht flfck market awoke from lU letharBJ' today ona did a lively buMncx * In the fecond hour of the Baturdsr shon tpsslon. The volume of the dealings and the Keneral movement of prices were greater than have been seen In several week * put. The reappearance on the bonnl of one of the principal opcr tor during the summer rife In prices and the distribution of InrRe order * for hit account were undoubtedly the principal causes of the rite. The tTFlKlance of the market during- the week to pressure oml the gradual hardening of price * In spile of the dullness had laid the foundation for an advance in prices under any confident leadership. During thu early part of the week the receipts were liberal , but very small during the latter half , as a result of the Intervening holiday. At the same time the recelp-.p of hoc * were larger tttan the pervious \\e k's record by over 10.000 head and the largest of any week since the first -week In August. The sacep receipts were the largest since the llrst week of the present month. CATTLE There were only thirty-four fresh loads of cattle In the yards anil only twenty-seven of them iJivre on Bale. The market , as is almost Invariably the case on a Saturday. < xas without feature of Impor tance. The cattle sold at prices about the same as prevailed yeserday. ; The Intervention of a holiday In the middle of the week always tends to demoralize tne trade to some extent and nuturally reduces the receipts. The past week , however , the cattle market was In a very healthy condi tion , despite nny drawbacks there may have been. The demand for all kinds of cattle was good and fully equal to the moderatu receipts. Kjch day's arrivals met generally with quite ready sale and at prices that shoiaied little variation from day to day. On Tuesday there was a break of about lOc on fat cattle , but that -was fully made up be fore the close of tae week. Representative sales : NATIVES. I1EEF STEEHS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. No. Av.
