Special Thanksgiving services were held yesterday at Iho Congregational church. A quartet of singers , composed of Mrs. Warren Mrs. C. E. Van Court and Messrs. F , M. Wescott and C. S. Havemock , furnished music for the occasion. Rev. Dr. Wilson reac ! & part of Psalm clti end also the prccldent'E Thanksgiving proclamation at the beginning of the service , "A Thanksgiving Meditation" was the subject of the sermon. The text was taken from Pualm rill C : " 1 will sing unto the Lord because he bas dealt bountifully with me , " "The bible IE a book of Joy and song , " Eaid the speaker , "and every page bears eome words of praise end encouragement. While Paul was a great theologian he was also a fctriger and his songs are- notable for the Joy ind faith they Inspire. TVe all know of thr 'Sweet Singer of Israel' and have been moved to rapture bj hie songs of Jcy and praise , bui ho WBE also a man of sorrow , and we fine Mm man- times wrapped In melancholy There IE one thing notable about David , and that is tb-it at the time when he Is mc t depressed witu Borrow he seems still to re member the goodness of God and immediately -rlees above his sadness - and attains a feeling of Joy and gladness. It was at a time like , ! ? , .thai he wrme lhe WDrflE of the text which should be a source of Inspiration to every one , David's writings , however , are true to life and every one finds himself at some time under the impression that ever ? onb about him Is more fortunate than him- eeli "Every one has a great deal to be t'aankful to Goa for , and we need more thaa one day in which to offer our thanks to Him. The poet Cowper was a man of moods and even at tlmcE BeriouUy contemplated suicide. At the time when he oime out of these moods and thought of the advantages and blessings ho had received In life he would be moved tea a eeling of ecrtacy and wrote tome of tht most beautiful hyr.is taal we have today. King George , when aEked why he had ap pointed a day of thanksgiving just after he h.Jd acknowledged the independence of the thirteen colonies , replied taat they should be thankful that it was no worse. We may learn a lesson from thiE today , end if we have suffered tome loss in Me past we may still be thankful that we ore not in the position that thousands of others are. "Let us compare ourselves Ior a few min utes vith those who have not the senses that enable them to see the beautiful brooks the delicately tinted flowers and the expres sion of sympathy and love in. the faces of our i dear ones. BO necessary to the happiness of our lives. Think for a moment of the posi tion of Laura Bridgeman. who ctrtalnE her knowledge of the wo.-ld through the avenue of only one of the physical senses that of touch : also that of Helen Keller a case al most as distressing. Think you not that these distressed ones are sad and lonej ! ? Tncy are .not. They are well educated , cheerful and happy and even thank God for the life that He gives them. Have we eyes to see and ears to hear all the "beauties of this world and have no song of praise and tharksgivinc ; to God , who gave us these BenseE ? Wealth and possessions may come by chance , but health and physical perfect- ness never ; they are purely "a gift of God and we should "be thankful for these if we have nothing else topraise jjim for. We thould be thankful that we were born in thiE civilired nation and not in a country where the darkness of heathenism would fall oipon us We should be thankful that we are not in the position of the poor of the great cities of the world , never fceelng the beauty of peaceful vale or snow-capped mountain , nor receiving a ibreath of pure air The rich are not all happy , and many are bound down 1 > y the burden of their cares until life has little pleasure for them. We in Council BluEs may thank God that we belong to the great middle class of the people of the world , having enough to make us happy and not enough to be a burden to UE. UE.The question for tis to answer IE why have we been BO fortunate ? Is it all chance' Are we physically as strong as we are 'by chance , or docE it not ell come through the loving kindness of God ? That question is for yooi to answer individually. God's love and kind ness surely increases our responsibility to Him and a responsibility of thiE kind is In deed a eacred one. Have you any song to ping to God for -His blessings , and kindness ? Surely we all have something to be thank ful for. and surely we all have some song to blng , or-words of praise to offer to Him , who in loving kindness provides all things for | our happiness.
