CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Jobbita and Mannfactnrers Do a Comfort able Business in Spile of Mild Weather. CCL'.tCTIONS GENERALLY SHOW UP WELL Oninlin 3lnl < rn I.nr f finlnn In Clrnr- I IIIKH llnrkrtii on l.cnillnu ; Klndu of ; 1'roiliicc Cirnrnilly Knvnrnlilc [ to kiflllnu ; Intercut * . The season has arrived when n contin uance of the prcxcnt mild and spring-like weather can hnrdly be expected much longer nnd a week ago Jobbers , and In fact fl nil business Interests , were basing large liopes on the outcome of the cooler weather which prevailed for n few days. They xvcre disappointed , however , In the weather , ns the temperature has continued far too mild for this season of the year. Still thtre has been a Eood business doing In most nil lines , though It may seem somewhat re markable that It should bo Bo. In a fetv Instances jobbers report that ow Jl ing to large sales of merchandise earlier In the Ecapon nnd to the moderate consuming ing- demand resulting from the weather conditions there hns been a slight falling oft In country trade. At th same time other houses report no diminution In the volume of goods moving out from first liands. In some lines the pressure to secure Koods la quite strong. This Is especially noticeable In the boot nnd shoe business , where It Is very dltllcult to secure goods from the manufacturers fast enough to till current orders. The gnme Is true of the trade In rubber goods , which are In active demand , while it Is very hard work to Eccure what la wanted from the factories In the east. The coming of n snow Hurry or a little wet nnd cold weather would be very apt to bring on u great scramble for goods In- these lines. The dry goods people are doing a very comfortable business. The rush of the fail Bcaxon Is naturally over , but sortingup orders are coming In quite freely from the country , showing that the retailers have been enjoying n good trade and that stocks nre already being broken. The tendency or the market on woolen poods Is steadily upward , owing to the higher price of the raw material and Ihe active demand for manufactured goods. All the eastern fac tories are swamped with orders and job bers sny that It Is no easy matter to re place broken lines even nt the advance asked. WOOLEN GOODS ADVANCE. Woolen goods are now 15 to 20 per cent higher than they were at the low point and these who have been keeping In close touch with the course of the market nre predicting still further advances between now and next senBon. They are basing their predictions on the fact that manufac tured poods have not advanced In proportion tion with ; the raw material nnd that a still further advance will have to take place to bring the two In line. In the cotton goods department there Is a good deal of complaint among the manu facturers owing to the fact that the cotton Rheetltig market Is somewhat depressed. There Is machinery enough In the country , if run till the time , to turn out twice ns much sheeting as the country can consume. .As the cotton cloth business Is n very large item In the do * goods business It is quite natural that a good deal of importance ehould be given to It. At the same time the mills manufacturing cotton hosiery , underwear - wear nnd the- different kinds of cotton dress goods are all sold up and It Is no easy matter to secure desired stocks nt any of these mills. Cotton yarns have advanced 2 cents per pound nnd the market Is very firm on most all lines of manufactured goods , excepting only sheeting. In the line of groceries there Is a very active demand from all sections of a tribu tary territory. The grocers nave been doing u good business ever since the revival of trade In the fall nnd there does not appear to be any Indication of u let-up In the near future nt least. The hardware people are also doing n good business , but colder weather would be Kreatly appreciated , as It would stimulate the demand for such goods ns are In re quest during the winter months. Omaha bank clearings continue to show large gains over one and two years ago. During the past week they amounted to almost $1COOOCO pfr day , -which was consid ered very good , even during the best times In the history of the city. Ever since June the clearance reports have been run ning ahead of the corresponding months of 1SSO and 1S35 nnd thus far this month there hns been a Btlll heavier gain , so that November promises to show up the I largest total of any month In three years. The local produce and stock markets have generally been in quite a favorable con dition so far ns the Interests of sellers are concerned. In cattle there was quite a falling off In receipts owing to the late ness of the season having stopped the run of runge cattle. JOBBERS AND MANUFACTURERS. The United States Supply company has commenced work on the Correctlonvllle la. , water works system , it having secured the contract for the work. The , cost of the plant will be something over { 0,500. H. J. Chlssell of the National Oil and Paint Company Is back from a trip to the western part of the state , where he found conditions very favorable.for trade. Farm ers out there are In better shape and nre painting and repairing their buildings , as Is evidenced by the heavy sales of barn paints. "That the home Industry movement. " says the Texas Trade Ueview. "Inaugurated some months ago has greatly benefited our local manufacturers no one can doubt. A majority of the people of Dallas are hon estly endeavoring to build up home Indus tries by patronizing them whenever It U = possible to do so. " The Lee-Clnrk-Andrcesen Hardware com pany wjll put a new man on the road , com. mcnclng December 1 , who will cover Utah , Montnna nnd Idaho. Mr. I-nux , who has been In New York for the last two or three years , but who will bo remembered as having been at one time connected with the Omaha Hardware company , has been i selected for the position. The liquor business of the country np- pcarn to be In a very peculiar condition , nt least the distilling branch of the bus iness. . While the volume of business doing Is large , the demand being of vtry com fortable proportions , there seems to be very little s.itUfnctton In It for the distillers. Thd rule or ruin policy of the trust Is still continued nnd % 7hllc controlling a compara tively small number of the distilleries of the country , the price hns been cut down po low ( hat there Is very little money In the business for anyone. President M. H. Peters of the Manu facturers' association has appointed as inemberH of his executive committee the following : A. J. Vlerllng. J. J. Smith. C. 13. Black. J. W. There Is a goo'I den' ' ° f activity among the shirt makers owing to the largely In creased country trade , much of It coming to Omulia from Iowa. Down nt the Ne braska shirt factory they are crowded with ordern for colored shirts , which are grow ing rapidly In popular fuvor. Business men nro tukliu' mart1 to colored goods than ever before and U in noted that men now will wear nothing else who two years ngo would have felt Insulted If a manufacturer had suggested such n thin ; . The tuw patterns are much more subdued than tlioso In vogue u year ago , the very loud IlKiireo having been short-lived. The predominating colors nppcur to bo pinks and blues and the new nhudes known ug wood browns. There appears to be n scarcity of hay all over the south , which has created a considerable shipping demand. At- the name time the home dcinuiul U heavier than usual , owing to the largo number of cattle that nre bclntj fed out In the state. Ne braska did not have a very large hay crop this year , which , taken in connection with the very good demand , has rendered the market pretty tlrm. The great bulk of the buy coinlntr to this market at the pres ent time Is selling for $ > } and a good deal of It at J6.0 per ton In car lots. The farm ers who hud a hay crop this year lire making good money out of It. which will help to make up for the > years when the tihlpplnif. charges ubsorbod ull that the hay brought. leaving the farmers nothing for their labor and trouble. Thus fur not n great quantity of Nvbraeka hay has gone touth. ns the southerners prefer timothy. Vrvnnessee , however. 1mB taken some and In localities where they have become accut tomed to prairie hay they like It well. After the farmer * ret thflr fall work done nnd the cornhusklng- out of ihe way or the weather Is too cold to continue It they turn their attention to marketing the hay crop , U Is never too cold or stormy to bale hay. and about the middle of De cember It very often happens that the market here becomes overloaded and val ues drop. The stock market was almost Inert today nnd drifted under noery well defined motive toward a lower level. Lon don's B : : at tire seemed to exercise a rather de pressing Influence on that financial center , and for lack of another initiative the local stock market followed that lead. Dealings were on a very small scale and Die movement of prices outulde a few special cases very narrow. Even Consolidated Gas took on a rat.icr subdued an- pen and brought its variations within a ranee of 3 points , an extraordinary moderation , lor this c-cientilc stock. Metropolitan Street Railway was notably strong and continued Its ntUance of yesteiduy to the extent ot 2 points additional. The local political situation Is cited as telng likely to Injure the benefit of this property. There was no other notable feature In the market. The declining tendency seemed to be somewhat c.iecked at the last anil closing showed pome slight recoverlts on short covering. The bank Matiintnt was without any Influence on the trading , as It showed about wnat was txpected. The Increase In loans Is undoubtedly- due to the operations connected with the sale of the' Union I'tclII : , the llrst payment for which nearly ns.WO.COO , Is to be made Mur.day. The excess of deiwslts over that In loans reflect the returns from Interior banks which arc depositing Idle funds In both the New York nnd Chicago banks In large volume. Outside of the fnlon Paaflc Ijans there Is no doubt that the banks would show a substantial Increase , as there has been a large Increase In merchandise accounts du.-lng the week , and the money market has been vtry dull In all departments. Bidding for choice grades of commercial paper has been -\ery active but the market has been almost bare ot offerings. nic . . .oney market has not shown the slight est flutter over the approaching J13 , X > 000 pay ment to the government on account of the fnlon Pacific mlee. This will amount to little more than a se-Mes of bookkeerUniTientrles , the credits in large part being cotaine.-- the banks handling large accounts. These banks ha\e de posited in the treasury at Washington go\ern- ment bonds to the amount of the set-urltles and the government has arranged to lea\c Its funds on depmlt In the various banks. The stock market has "b * a. a rather trivial affair all week , trading beini-n ; small volume , and the movement of prices flight. The price oj stocks 1s lower than last s.iturrtiy. and the weakness of the coalers Is lean responsible for bringing down the avenge. KI Mvh ro in the list there nre few pramlnrat st , rKs thai show a net exchange exceeding a fraction either way. Sugar and Conciliated \Gas have sh-nn the widest variations , and hav.ivibforl.eJ lh greatest share of activity and lntcr t. and tht net result la shown In gains of less thftn'"J per'tcnt Consolidated Oai has sold ns'nigh as 1S3 ami as low as 1 , , , closing al.Jut i iKilnta rciov the tx-st. The variations In this stook 7mve followed thf ? mutable utterances put forth by an Interest whos assent la sought to the plan for merging the local gna companies , ] and U hag kept tlio stock quite active to keep , uj > i\vith these chance' . union Pacific has been markedly heavy. Out side of these and a fewof the- ' specialties , tpecu- latlon Is apparently d iA for the time telp ; ? . On Thursday the total salesof stocks Ml n less than 150,000 shares. This apathy of rifculatlon Is more noticeable In view of the amplltule of money , and the large reserve of rtoney supply made available by the heavy imde l-uunce In favor of this country. Th * hult In speculation cannot be attributed to existing ccndlllr.ns , wh'ch continued to be very favorable , but rnther to doubu regarding the future. It is \ ual for Wall street to come to a pause In l-a operations ; n November , pending the assembling of cunpn-ss. the publication of the president's m ? fagc and the perception of the temper of the legislative branch. The tendency of railroad eamlnjs Is being scrutinized with great attention. The week's returns for the second wek in November show- earnings well up to the Lost records In former ye.ars. and In the case of - > me t'-u'.hern and southwestern roads , where nreas cf traffic re leased from quarantine restrictions nre coming forward , the showing Is ihe in-st on record. Iut the expectation Is that the third w , lc famines will not be fully maintained at the rectnt Mgh level. The net returns , frym railroads for Octo ber , which are expected shortly , urf- said to ehow a very large proportion of recent heavy Increases In gross earnings absorbed by operating expenses. In view of the drastic system of retrenchment which was enforced on many railroad systems during th < ? previous years It was expected that there would be arrearages to be made good In the present more prosperous times. The wldo- spread ctntllct of railroad rates all through the country tends to arouse ft-nra regarding the future prcpects. The public has pondered there things and h.ifl decided to wait for the future. As a natural outcome of cheap money and speculative uncertainty the market fr railroad bonds hai been lelallvely active , and the hlch grarto Usues have been very stiffly held , resulting In record prices In same cases. Prices nre higher In nearly a'l cases. The total sales we.-e J7 3 > 0 OX ) . United States ts are * i higher for the week. S.iturdav. but half of all the cattle here were consigned direct to packers and were not offered for sale at nil. As a result there were not cattle enough on sale to make much of a. market. As usual on n Saturday the trade , . \ns without feature of Importance. The four or five loads of corn fed steers . T here sold ut Ilrst nt about steady prices. was one lot good enough to bring J4..0 Cows nnd heifers sold In nbout the same notches as yesterday nnd the trade was of little Importance owing to the few cattlu Were were no stockcrs or feeders of any importance In the yards. The fresh receipts were ex remely light nnd the cattle In the hands of speculators were pretty well The season -when range cattle may be ex pected to arrive Is at nn end and from now on the market will be dependent upon the arrivals of native or corn fed cattle. The end of the range tco.'on is reflected -nrge-y reduced receipts , the to.nl arrivals lust week having been the smallest for any .seek since A"vith 'so few cattle here during the past week It was not nt all dltllcult to , kec ? the yards cleared ; In fnct packers were com pelled to piece out supplies wUi shipments from other markets. The tendency on ban y little corn fed st ; ? s was upward , the maiket on s-uch lyjims stronsr all the .aeck. At the tame time coarse and heavy cattle had a downward tendency , the market on that klnl being weak and slow n good deal of the time. Butchers' stock , .such us desirable k nds ot cows and heifers , sold high all the i eek and the market for the six days was not mucn altered. The common nnd medium such active demand kinds were not always In mand , but they sold , and nt good prices. While the demand for stockt-rs and feeders was not particularly large , ns Is usually the case nt this season of the year. It was fully equal to the supply. The- market on choice little cattle , which were In good demand all the week , i3vas not much changed. Heavy cattle were somewha ; neglected and the tendency of values was lower on that kind.
