CHICAGO , Nov. 19. There was enough
bullishness In wheat tolny to have advanced
too price 3e per bushel , but th close showed
rains of only Jc for December nnJ H6ic
for May. Top prices were made on the nn-
nounremchl of French purchases of l.SCXOui )
bu. wheat off coast at London. Corn was
! ow and closed % c lower for December , but
unchanged for Stay. There was nn Irregular
market In oats , December declining 'Ac and
.Mny iR'as unchanged. Provisions declined
about 2',4c.
WhuU got a good start for higher prices
cit the owning by the strong tone of the
foreign market * . Liverpool InKead of de
clining In sympathy with the loss of % c per

was reported strong and higher. AnoUtr

News telegraphed that corn estimates from
the Husslan minister fully confirmed pre
vious b.id repons * The minister gave the

In ltu sla propsr. The effect of this was
nomewhat spoiled by Another report which
pave the shortage at 1U.OJ9.MX > bu. for the
whole empire.
The Heaviness of the northwest receipts
also had a tendency to keep , the market

opening prices for Hay ranged from MVic

der tne influence of the strong rab'.es th6
prlco soon got up to 91c , but It sacged again
and all morning- hung around 9yc ; ,
HrcelpU today at.lie : no big northwest
receiving centers numbered 1.I2C cars ,
against Ml cars a week ago and 919 cars the
corresponding day of the year before. It
was exacted that Minneapolis and Duluth
stocks of wheat would show an Increase
for the week of itbout AOvfl.OCO bu. , but dls-
patc.'ies from there ee Imatc the Increase at
enl > half of that. At Duluth an Increase of
( W.W9 bu. was expected and Minneapolis
stocks show 'in Increase of from 3.Vt ) j bu.

Another bearish Item of news > was that a
cargo fit American wlieat had lx > on reshlpped

to have "plenty of Its oxn.
Pritnnry western receipts were large again ,
l,13luvO bu. , compared with 674.CKJO bu. a year
ago.
Liverpool 'cIcJ higher by from Hid to
lsfd than It closed the day before. The rea
son given for such an unexpectedly heavy
advance was that l.uCO.fOO bu. of w-.eat des
tined for ports of call off coast In the United
Kingdom had been ordered to France. Even
with this as an Incentive 'he price of May
went up very unwillingly It firally ad
vanced to 91ssC , but when the Modern Miller
report was received declaring the ix'heat
area up to the a\er.ige and promising an in
crease , fie price went off again In a hurry.
( May was selling at % ' ( K ) c at the close.
Corn 'rtus dull , the exer ion of the previous
two days having apparently taken all the
life out of the traders. Business consisted
chiefly of changing from December to May
a. C1s/iJ34c / ! spread. T.ie market was f.ilrlj
.steady and helped by the firmness of wheat
and oats and the moderate recelp's , 24 cars.
Seaboard cluannees were S50i > Xl bu. CablcF
wure Vft'id higher. May ranged from COft

SSW.'StXFiC. '
The crowd In oats was large all day and
a nervous feeling existed throughout the
pcr-slon. At fie opening and for a time after
there was heavy buying by the people who
nero so prominent on the buying side. Later
they turned and sold heavily of December
and the spread.1wsJch had narrowed to vsc.
widened to Ic , The "switching" was so con
tinuous that traders became somewhat be
wildered. The heavy selling In December ,
however , resulted In a % o decline In that
op'ion. Cash demand continued urgent and
sales of IXjO.OW bu. were reported. Receipts
were 301 car. . May ranged from 2f'VT22:5e :
RO 22HiJC2".c , closing unchanged at 22 = . , c ,
Provisions were again very dull Tne mar
ket * .vas barely steady , with the range o3
prices less than 5c In everything. Hog re
ceipts overran estimates , which may account
for the uneasy feeling Packers were fair
buvers around the opening , but utter that

NEW YORK , Nov. 19.-The market today con-
tlnued Its dull and narrow character , though at
some slight Improvement over yesterday , both In
the volume of the trading and In the movement
of prlc . The extreme riteon the average was
greater than yesterday , but realUIng sales In
the last hour reduce ! the net gain to very nar.
fh . ? i ? ? * ln most raeTne movement In
the sperlaltles wail much freer than In the rtand-
rallroad stocks , and Sugar and Manhattan ran
one time 2 per cent higher than yesterday ,
close , and sharp gains were also shown by Pee
ple s Gas. New Jersey Central , Reading first pre
ferred and Lead preferred. All of these ( rains
were very materially less before the clo e. Vest
Chicago fctreet Railway was quite active and
strons ana rose nearly 2 per cent.
Hut consolidated Gas occupied the middle of
, * ' 5.se ona was lh center of attention all
il y. This stock opened S4 ! per cent higher or ,
the belief that a large Individual interest In one
of the local gas companies , which has been hold
ing out for the best terms , had been brought Into
the agreement for amalgamation. The suvk
mounted upward by wide bounds , sometimes
over n point between sales , to 103V4. but the very
great skepticism In the speculative mind regard
ing published utterances on the progress of the
plan of confoll-.utlon then became manifest IN
the equally feverish couree of the stock toward
a lower lever. It got as far down as ? and
after vibrating In nn erratic manner closed > j
per cent higher at a. net gain , o : 3. per cent.
The later weakness In the market was Ou * In
pan to receipt ? from the west of falling eff In
railroad earnings , and to widespread dlRlculty
"vcr the maintenance of railroad rates. There
was talk also that large Increases In operating t
expenses would reduca the net earnings of ranI I
roads for October below what has been counted
upn. Iluylng for London account helpci to sur-
taln the market In the earlier dealings.
A feature of the day was a sharp rise ofc
In the rate * of sterling exchange , both for de.
mand bill ? and O3i > 1e transfers. This .was In
part the reflection of a stiffening In the discount
rate In London where the Dank of England Is
again borrowing money In the open market with
the purpwe of controlling the private discount
rate and relieving the pressure for gold In that
renter.
Mmsy In this market continued very dull ani
eay In all department ? . Not only has a dull-
nefs of ppe'ulatlon recced the demand for
money , but there has ten quite a heavy flow
uf funds during the wesk from Interior point ? .
Tomorrow's bank statement Is expected to show
a material Increase of available money.
The bnnd market was moderately active and
prices advanced. Total sales , { 1,345.000. United
State ? 4s. registered , and 5s advanced H per
jent bid.
The Evening Post's London financial cable
gram says : "The stock markets were Idle and
irregular toShy. Consols and other Investment-

porarily dearer for reasons already cabled you.
The price of gold has fallen to 77s Hid. Ameri
cans were firm , nnd on the whnle a better ten
dency , being assl ted by Senator Hanna's bull-
'ph ' remarks en trade. The Paris bourre was
rather dull and the Berlin , market was quiet. "

CATTHB There were only seventy-seven
loads of cattle here all told and out of that
number there were ten cars which were
conslsned direct to packers and were not
offered for pale. The market as a whole
was lacklnc In Interest and was Inclined to
be slow and devoid of life. There were some
pretty decent cattle In the yards , but at the
same time a good deal of trash.
The most deslrablo of the fat cattle sold
at Just about steady prices , 33 there were
not many here. At the same time advices
from other markets were not reassuring
and the market was a little slow and In
clined to be easier on the less desirable
kinds. While the trade was lacking In life
there were so few here that the supply was
soon exhausted.
There were quite a peed many cows and
heifers on sale and the most desirable kinds
moved off quite readily and at just about
steady prices. One load of pretty good lit
tle heifers sold at J4.25 and another at J4.30.
The market on the medium and common
kinds was -Oow and weak Practically every ,
thing sold in good season.
Stocktrs anil feeders were in very mod
erate supply and the market was Just about
steady. Kepresentative sales :
