revised figures of the world's visible sup

size of the movement , according to C A
Plllsbury. the Minneapolis miller. Is onlj
regulated by the amount of cars to be had
Farmers had marketed 02 per cent by No
vember 1 nnd he thought SO per cent would
be gone bj December 1 When lake navi-
ptition closes he thinks more tnan the sur
plus will be sold and after that the ex
porters can ciet nothing , fop whatever they
offer the millers will have to i y more or
cease grinding He concludes his ob erva-
tlons as follows. .
"I make no predictions of the Immediate
future of prices , because It vvJU be gov
erned entirely by speculation and spec
ulative ideas , but the actual Khortage of
wheat that is bound to exist will not be
apparent to the naked t-ve of cither Ameri
cans or foreigners. Hut before May 1 It will
be more apparent than It was last year on
the Int of July with harvest a good deal
further off. "
Next to the big movement from the farms
comes the better weather In the freshly-
needed crop This lias been a great de
pressing Influence , but exaggerated Impor
tance seems to have been attached to It
The winter crop Is certainly a month to six
weeks late and any practical farmer knows
what that means In the way of danger to
the prowth of the grain It Is yet too early
to form any estimate' of the sprlns sowing
It la reasonable to expect , n larger acreage
than last year , but this IH a matter to be
regulated greatly by the weather Indeed
thii spring and summer of JHi § may cut the
crop In half or may greatly Increase Jt ,
eo It U Idle yet to speculate upon that
feature. It will do for a bear Implement
once In a while , but U should not long
affect the cash market.
Another feature which rather 'argues
against liroomhall'H conclusions of immense
exports la that there has not bein the ad
vance In ocean freights which took place
last year. There has been no change since
November 1 and this does not support the
theory of crowded vessels and extraordinary

The wheat market Is always one of the
most Interesting of statistical studies and
this year rivals any of lhe past In exclu-

yet was foretold exactly by figures , but
this time U seems that statistics of supply
and demand are more than ordinarily dis
credited H does not seem that yraln will
go lower , but the situation appears to jus

THE STORY.
Anthony Hopo'a mastery of
vvittv an'd inimitably f/rucoful
dialogue , 03 well us his wpndcr-
fu ) skill in the weaving of a dra
matic tale , is admirably dis
played in this now story of ingen
ious construction and sustained
interest. Few etories , oven of
Mr. Hope's , urc more replete
with incident , more rapid in
movement , or deal more pictur
esquely with a group of histori
cal characters than this of "Si
mon Dale. "
The period is ono peculiarly
suitable to the author's pen ! us.
The hero moves in the romantic
days of Charles II , and his for *
tunes are entangled with those
of the dltisoluto Stuart , and
of Louis XIV of Prance. A
witch's prophecy at his birth
has foretold that "ho will love
what the King loves , know what
the King hide ; , , and drink irora
the King's cup. " How Simon it
bewitched with eaucy NcllGwyn ,
but is at heart faithful to his first
lore ; how he bears himself like
an honest gentleman through all
thecouit intrigues ; how bo defends -
fends his lady with a wit and
with a Kword point equally keen ,
to win her to hinuclf at last ,
