There were periods of dullness and hesitancy during the day and total sales of all stocks was less than 400.000 shares , of which Sugar , llurllngton und St. Paul made up near a half. Not gains In excess of 2 per cent were shown by Consolidated Oas , which rose 7 pe" cenl , Detroit Oils 3H per cent , Lake Shore 3 per cent. The westerns are gradually giving place to native cattle mm corn fed steers arc dally becoming moro plentiful. The season ot the year Is also drawing near when It la not unusual to wUness a gradual falling oft In bwf values , and a movement In that direction seems to have already set In. The packers generally llgurc on getting prices down as much as iposklblo so that bei > f can compete with poultry and game , which usually become both plentiful and cheap as the holidays draw near. At. all the markets In the country the same thing may be observed , buyers pounding prices which are gradually working lower. Today's m.irket on beef steers was not what sellers like to see. Some ot the trains were late In arriving and buyers were not Inclined to n.ove until fully informed us to the extent of the recclix.s. When the trains were all In they did not move about with muoai celerity , but sat on their horses with the Indifference of men who did not care whether they got any cat-.lo or not. Tne result was a slow and dull market , but the cattle finally sold and at prices that were not much different from yesterday. The supply of butchers' stock was not largo and desirable cows and heifers iwcro good sellers ae Just about steady prices. Ono load of cholco corn fed heifers sold at $4.20. The country bought very sparingly of feeders yesterday , so that speculators had quite a good many cattle left over. Still the fresh receipts were not so very largo and the bettor grades at least were fully steady. Common and rough feeders were slow sale. Representative sale * : NAT1VUA HEEF STKCIIS. No. Av.
