HV P. Y. BLACK. I. 1 THK BOYS. Tr. ) Mcl'hall , panting , his whiskers scorched and In blackened shirtsleeves , took each of his hoardcrn by an ear ntid led the frlghl'erod hoys Into the lioimc and so , up- utalra , to their bedroom. ' 'I think , " ho said grimly , "you may go to j lied now. You are both probably tired out by your exertions and the excitement and I hall BCD you are not disturbed until morn- Ing. " Kenneth and Nell gasped In dismay. The doctor placed the key In the lock on the out side of the door. "Can't we como down to the party to night ? " they cried. The doctor closed the door. "It's Halloween , doctor , " they howled. "I3oys are alwajs allowed to have bonfires on Halloween ! " "Out not to make them of utablra and houses , " the doctor answered and locked the door upon his prisoners. Kenneth sat down upon Un ! bed and Nell upon hlfl and they looked at each other In dismay. If cither had been alone doubt- lees foe would have wept , but company Is a great Incentive to fortitude and defiance. The bojs were brothers and twins , sons of an Kngllsh ofilccr In India. They were In Scotland for their education and thej boarded wl-h Dr. Mcl'liall. They were little follow * 10 yearn old , and this was their first year In the land of their parents' birth. Now , of all Scotch festivals , these youncutors had hoird most of Halloween Its mysteries , Its rollicking fun , the ancient observance * of Us celebration. Then , It never else , a Scotch boy has rights and la privileged , for that occasion only , with turnips , skulls In lonely lanes , with katlrunts loaded with Knioldcrlng low , and with bonfires , to make an abominable mi ! nance of himself. Over the bonfires the brothers fell Into trouble. IUalc aly , unible to wait until nightfall , they had , shortly after their early dinner , started an experimental blaze In the doctor a atablcyard with terrifying results , the fault , as the twins pleaded , entirely of the wind , which mallclous'y turned the wrong way and act some woodwork on fire , to the Imminent peril of the stables and the .louse. Hcnuc the doctor's scorched whiskers , hence astounding languagu from u.ie groom to his young friends , previously on such cord.al terms with him , hence the boys' committal to bed , than which they would rather hive hud a flogging twice over. For Imprisonment meant exclusion from their own Halloween party to which the doctor had permitted them to Invite their friends a Halloween party whcro one duclta his head In a tub of water to selzo the ( lodging apple : with the teeth , where one burns nuts with one's sweet heart to see whether twn lives sh-ill pass In close communion or petulantly leap ap.xrt , whcro ono or. that eerie night , when spirits walk abrod , has the best chance In all the year to meet a genuine bogle. No wonde ; Kcnncli'i and Ntll were dismayed ami dis contented. Thq doctor returned to the stables where old Allck the groom was still pouring buckets of water over the smoking woodwork. "Well , " he said , for he was a philosophic man , "It's lucky It's no worse , Allck. It'll t > o a lesson to the boys. They'll bo more careful anlhor Halloween , and they were thoroughly frightened. I suppose I'll have "to let them out this tlmo for the hlghjlnks In the evening. This thing has blnlshed the other more serious affair from my mind for the moment. Have they found any clew to the murderer ? " "Na , " Allck answered , gravely. "Nae malr clew than we a' ken. There's siller nvlss'ln' frao Mr. Hankln's hoose , sao wl' oot doobt It's tbo same mon that's been robbln' a' the Itlier booses this month back. " "It's most uncomfortable , " told the doctor. "Tho man must bo desperate ; there's ifo tell ing what he may do next. No wonder , really , the whole neighborhood Is panlcstrlcken Thcro Is a big reward offered for him , by the by , Allck , and Lie ! recovery of the goods. " And the doctor soon afterwards rode away. THE RUNAWAYS. "Chee-he2l" Kenny giggled , as he dropped from the branches of the tree whlcli grew -under the boys' bedroom window. "CheehpnHn ! or.uldn't Icrlt the window , llo couldn'.t. " " 'Cause he thought wo was too little to climb out , " said Nell , with proud contempt , dhn bungalow , their soldier father and the mother they hungered to sec. The twins had run away , HI. i THE CAVE. The boys reclined at case on a springy bed of hay and heather , covered with an old homo blanket they had begged some tlmo bfforo from Allck. Most resourceful fellowa were the twins , and Alltk and the cook often wondered what they wanted with the odds and ends they asked for. Ai wa > a restless , always exploring , they had found wcfks ago a big bush-hidden hole In the side of the hill , where It shaped Into a shoulder , rounding to the other side ot the mount , and , daringly Investigating , had discovered a cave henceforth their , own their sp'clnl pride and delight , too precious a secret to bo confided to anybody else. Hero they were dcllclously happy In all spare moments as pirates , as shipwrecked sailors , as smugglers , as Cruse > and Friday , as themselves In their beloved bungalow across the Indian seas. The cave was not large. It was low In the roof , and now and then there were queer shakings and rumblings and crackings overhead , which had , nt first , alarmed the boys. Dut noth ing came from these disturbing noises save a few llttlo hunks of llme-llko plaster from a celling , so the twins bcc&mo used to the sounds. For a long tlmo they were supremely happy , gorging themselves on appl's and nuts and cheese , and scolding themselves trying to make coltco and taffy out of thu sugar , until they throw themselves on the hcathcr-acouted couch , tired but talka tive. . " \\1llsht , Nell ! " Kenny cried , shortly after dark , and listened , with a finger raised for silence. "Hushl Oh , Isn't she rumbling to night ! There's a chunk of lime fell right Into the fire. " .Thcrd came a queer crackling above them. "Whit niakca her crack and rumble so , Ken ? " Nell asked , when the noise ceased. "I don't know , " said "Ken , kicking his heels In the air."I read In a book all caves rumble. " " 0 ! " cried Nell , sitting up suddenly with a joyful light In his eyes. "I know , Kenny , Do you remember when Dr. Mcl'hall read the 'IJrownlo at 'Hodsbeck * to us last winter , that the man wrote he called the Ettrlck Shep herd ? That's what makes tie rolses ! It's Hrownlesl" "O ! Gundy ! " said Ken. "Wouldn't It be Jolly1'If'they came out and talked to us ! Lct'c put some cheese find nuts about the floor , ao's they can see thcnii and He quiet end perhaps they'll como If they think we're asleep ! " This was duly done-but no Brownies came. The mention of them , however , led the boys' chattef'lo Halloween follies again , for on that night not Urownlcs alone , but fairies and bo gles and piiosts and all strange spirits of the air i.ro visible to men. "If you want , " said Nell , "to see the spirit of your wife who's to be your wife , you know. You go " "I don't. " sa'ld Kenny , a little nervously "Well , If you want to see a bogle , cook cays you take a looking glass " "Allck gave me one from the saddle room. " He rose up and got It and stood , looking in It , 'hcaY the middle of the cave , his face , to the entrance. "I'm not afraid of bogles , " he said valiant ly , "but I'd like a brownie better. " Nell lay back and watched him , and told him what to do ant } say , "Look right In the glass and throw an apple peel there's ono at your feet over your left shoulder. I don't know If that's qulto right. I forget and say 0 ! Just say- very solemn , you know : "Bogle or brownie If you want to this Is Halloween como and let yourself be teen. ' "Cook said something like that , and It's poetry , It's got IP be poetry , you know. " Kenny held the glass firmly In his hand , though a llttloexcited , and threw the peel over his left shoulder. He began : "Bogle , tills Is Halloween ; come and let yourself " The glass drooped from his hand with a crash , and ho yelled aloud. Ho turned , - creaming horribly , crying out his brother's name * * In terror. Nell looked around , and screamed too , and the boys clutching each other tightly rolled on the horse blanket In an agony of dread. A hpavy stone lying neai cno sldo of the eave , tram behind which the boy had often noticed a current of air come , had been rolled aside , and Kenny In his glass , had-seen the reflection of a shaggy head am' THE HOIUUDLE FIGUIIR DRAGGED ITS LENGTH INTO THE CAVE. M ho landed on the cracs beside his brother , Doth bova wore dressed In their best clothes and carried nueerlv tied packages under thlr arms , from the corucrs of which Ktuck nut col lure and ends of stockings and neckties. Thev uevued round the corners of the house cautlouHlv. whlioerlng , "Wo'll lie In the cave till they're tired of looklnd foi < us. Wo can cat them , too , It wo got vury hungry , I'll sceel through the pntry window If you glvo me a hoist. " "Mind and Kct lots of the applet for the party tonight. Thev'ro lit a barrel big red ones , " Null whispered. "An1 nuts ! " Kenny "seeded. " Them was nobody In the pantry. Ken grabbed apples and mite l > v the handful -ind threw them out to Nell. Ho followed these with broad and cheese aud Bucar and coffee In rcKardlrta haste , loavlue havoc behind htm , and Jumped out to bis brother. Through the shrubbery , across a ayke , down the brae to the burn , across the step ping utoncj and up through the tlr planting they went , droppjng collars and coffee , sugar ud socks In their excltol haste. lilies- fully Ignorant of the dltllcullica In the road , tho/ were going home homo to their in- haggard , fierce face protruding from a hula which the rock had hidden , As the boy shrieked and hid their faces , the head drew alowly , slowly , speechlessly toward them while even above the hysterical cries ot th twins there rolled the ominous crack am rumble of the roof. IV. THE BOOIE. The horrible figure that Konny's tncanta tlon had apparently called up from Its dark abode lu ( ho Ineldo i'f the hill dragged Ils length at last Into tno cave. In thu ruddy light of the lire U lookoJ horrible ragged soiled , with wild frightened eyes and thin white , unshaven checks. The screama of tin boys seemed to terrify It. "Quiet ! quiet , d'yo hear ? " At a human voice , however rough , at the touch of real flesh and blood , th < * twlna' oma gradually ceased and th lr turror lessened They 'looked up tlm'.dly and saw a living man and Ken . .took hu'irt of grace. "We thought you were , a , bpgle , " he suld with halt a laugh and half a gob , aud u ho epokertho rumbling mid cracking over head bgan again and almost drowned tb sound of his last words. The man .vid th boyg were too excited to remark the noise The haggard man was shaking all over. "You're Dr. JUcPhaU'j boy , " he raid "I've watched you playing ut 4ila house. "Is who dead ? " they asked , shrinking from 10 burglar , and clinging to each other , "Mr. Itaukln , " the mat cried ImiMtlcntly. Uld I kill him ? Is thcvo a reward " A tremendous rumbling overhead Inter- upted him. A crash followed ; the top of ho cave shivered and the end nearest the ntranco fell Inwnrls with a rcur- closing p the hole with a "pile of rock and mud i ml rnss. Without finishing hlc sentence the lan cast one frightened glance upward , here the roof seemed still to sway and Ived foV the holehehad emerged from , where to had pushed the rock aside. In- tlnctlvcly , on hands and. knees , sometimes n their bellies , Ken ami Nell followed him lirough a low and narrow. uasF.iRc , Into an ther , larger cave ontho - other eldo of the houldcr of the hill. Hut the -cracking and iimbllng overhead pursued them4 and the illl seemed to tremble. The man totk no urther notice of them. The boys eaw him > n his knees before a sack ; ho was filling ils pockets , with trembling hands , with noncy and Jewelry , and thrusting spoons and forks uml things Into the breast of his flannel shirt , casting every moment a1 fear- ul. hasty glance upward. Kenneth sawa mlo opposite him , similar to the entrance o the boy's own cave. He seized Nell's land and led hint toward the hole. They toope.1 and crawled and scrambled again , nd were safe at last In the night air. They ushcd blindly In the direction of their home , nd ran tlia faster when they heard behind hem a terrible crash , as. the whole top of lie caves fell In. Two small boys lay In their room next day , pretty sick from fright and shock , very srateful for their , escape from a horrible loath , most penitent for ever having run iway. Kv. McPI-all sat between their beds an a chair and talked gravely to them. "Tho unhappy murderer end robber of Mr. lankln , " he said , "has been round crushed o death In the hillside , his plunder , for vhlch he sold his life and soul , beside him. " Ho paused aifd looked U the awed boys. "I shall write to your parents , " he said , 'and tell them of the reward coming to you forxflmllng lie property , but , " ho added , vlth a laugh , "I atall say nothing of your running away. When you want to do that another time tell me , and I'll start you off comfortably. " A Sporting ; German. There Is talk among the girls of a Sporting German , eays Harper's Bazar. Three sisters who love to dance. , and who wish to end up ho summer season with an entertainment o ! ! iome kind at their country place near town , lave planned to Invite a lot of their friends and glvo a german in the'Uig carriage house or barn , for which all the favors will be psr- alnlng to some game. If the Idea Is car1- led out as they propose they no doubt will lave a very enjoyable time. The village carpenter and saddler have both been pressed nto service , and the girls ere ns busy as iocs , rushing backwards and forwards , glv- ng orders and directing the making of the favors. For instance , they are having small tennis racquets made with balls for the tennis fig ure ; the racquets will each have a largo satin bow tied to the handle , and the balls are to be also tied across with narrower rib bons. Then they will have a golf figure , which will be very pretty. The carpenter 5s naklng email golf-sticks , the saddler Is mak- ng golf balls much .smaller , than the usual size , of course and the girls themselves are hard at work making email golf-bags. An other will be a croquet figure. For this they iave Invaded the toy shops and bought a ot of miniature croquet sets , which they will decorate with fancy bows of ribbon , While looking about .the toy shop for Ideas or another figure , the shopkeeper suggested ho old game of battledoor and shuttlecock. They quickly decided to buy four : jts , and are delighted with the effect they have pro- luccd by decorating them with streamers of ; ay ribbon and rosettes. One of the girls will cad the cotillon , with no partner , and she las devised all sorts of clever ways of hav- ng the figures danced with these original favors. It must bo understood that this 'is to bo a nest Informal sort of dance , as It naturally must bo when given In a barn. The girls will spen/1 the day before the affair comes off in hanging up branches cf autumn leaves and bunches of golden rod. American flags and bunting- will of course be mustered Into service , and an order hns been sent to New York for several dozen Japanefe and Chinese interns. The first will be the croquet IgUre. After taking one turn about the floor , 'the ' men are to stand In a row In the niello of the room and hold the mallets up In the air , forming a sort of archway , .hrough which the glrle will dance , with the > alls In their hands. The golf figure will : > o danced very much In the same way. The Igure In which tennis racquets and balls will be used will perhaps be the prettiest of all , The girls are to have the racquets slung over the shoulder , much as one does a banjo , and dance once about the ream with tlem. The men will have the balls , and , at a given signal from the leader , will throw them to the girls , who will bo standing at the other end of the room. Whichever strl touches the ball with her racquet will be the partner of the man who threw It. There will be- only about twenty-five couples , and If everything turns out as anticipated , the Sporting German will surely be asuc cess. IWflll IIIlltH.
